"The Lament For Icarus"

The story isn't long, but it does seem important. It has continued to be represented in art and in story (though there have DEFINITELY been some changes made to make it fit into the new cultures), but it was also super important in ancient Greece, where sacrifices were made in a festival in his honor. Rituals were done in his name. I will probably forget to follow up on this and read more articles about why, so if you know, you should email me!

Anyway, a short summary is made by Apollodorus (1.9.19), which I will translate myself (since I don't like Frazer's translation at all here):

Everyone knows what a philanderer Zeus was, in fact, I'm sure it was something of a family joke on Olympus. But Hera wasn't laughing. She knew her husband cheated on her just about every second of the day, but she wasn't going to just sit there and watch it. The object of today's story is...

Our story begins with Echo and Zeus. That ever-cheatin' God was at it again, this time with the mountain nymphs of Kithairon, of whom Echo was one. Now, at that time (just in case you may have picked up on the significance of her name) Echo was a nymph like any other and a very talkative one at that. And while Zeus was dilly-dallying with Echo's sisters, Hera was NOT a happy camper. She had followed Zeus, expecting JUST that kind of behavior out of him. She came down to Earth to apprehend her "too-much-love-for-one-woman" husband, but Zeus, being godly, sensed her coming. Echo bit the bullet...
