The memories, even now, are blood flowing from fresh wounds. I could see their forked tongues flicking in the light of our sky light orbs as they conversed through hisses that boarded the lines of near shrieks and the deep snorts that mocked us.

So eager were we. Eager and foolish, for their numbers were threefold of our twenty. By the time we realized their ambush, it was too late. All we could do is stand steady.

Oh how I mourn so deeply over our lack of preparation. We were not prepared. They attacked us with a ferocity that no man alone could endure. They struck so heavily, and with cleavers the length of a Volkeri's armored body, hammers thicker than a skull and moved like impossible serpents that smelled wickedness

They slaughtered my men handfuls at a time, crushed our mages, grinded bones and drank blood from the innards of the cleaved.

Cowardice consumed me, and I fled. I can still hear their shrieking calls and the screaming of men."
