A/N: Just a short one-shot inspired by “False Witness”. I own nothing.

From hands and hearts

With another snowy evening in D.C, another day ended for Tony. But it was the first time in the last few days that he felt actually pretty good. Not the sort of good his was used – DiNozzo-good – but it was still a huge improvement. Unintentional Brenda Bittner had puzzled him; making him think about his entire life, the past years and all the One-Night-Stands he had had. Midlife crazy.
He was about to switch on TV, when someone knocked at his door. DiNozzo wondered; he hadn’t expected visitors that late.
With his hand still on the door handle he saw Ziva standing on his boot scraper. On her jacket were loads of snow flakes. She was the last he had expected, the knowing look in her eyes showed that she was aware of that. Normally her scent smelled like lavender, roses or vanilla; mostly something botanic. But today it was different. Sooner that day he hadn’t been able to associate it.
“You smell like snow and grapefruit.” Tony stated.
“No shea butter?” she pouted and smiled at the same time.
“No.”
“Do you know why I am here?”
“No.” It was an honest answer. They stood there in the door frame, just looking and talking.
“I don’t know either. It so happened that I was around and I decided to come around for a short visit.” Her confession for the non-planned visit surprised him. “I guess.” she added fast.
“You guess?” he smirked by the thought of his confession over a year ago.
I can’t live without you, I guess.
“Yes.”
Now they remained in agreeing silence. Both of them liked the sound of nothing. Just their own thoughts. Ziva considered the possibility to turn around and run as fast as possible. But that wouldn’t be fair and actually she wanted to stay, being around Tony felt good, felt right.
“Did you mean everything you said?” he asked to break the silence.
“What?”
“The things you said earlier, about growing up, finding the balance and about… about matters of the heart?” Tony gazed into her big brown eyes.
“Yes. Because it is the truth.”
“But…” Ziva put her index finger on his mouth before he could even end the sentence. Then she put her other hand on his heart. She could feel his heart beat through his chest and the thin t-shirt. “No ‘but’. Layer by layer we uncover each other. It takes time to unravel each others secrets. Seeing you, how you grow up makes me happy. Really, because it shows that you can act like an adult person.” Ziva’s speech made Tony speechless.
“You love me?” Tony brought up the matter, which had bothered him since she had said it.
“I said ‘we’ love you.” she avoided this certain topic. Tony bent down a little bit, he was about to kiss her and Ziva didn’t do anything against it. Before their lips could touch, Tony’s mind went away and he thought about another touchy subject.
“And you are spending Christmas with your friend from Miami?” he asked. Ziva leant back. She laughed.
“The grown up Tony should learn to keep his mouth shut. That is just a little advice.” she said. Ziva kissed his cheek, turned around and walked away. And there she left Tony in the door frame of his flat. Alone. Unkissed. And without an answer about Miami Man Friend.
