Chapter 26 – Comparisons
Katara trembled with extreme shock. Zuko was in love with her. Zuko.Firelord Zuko. Her best friend. Before that, he had fought against her. He was the person she viewed as “the face of the enemy”. He was apart of the Fire Nation, the nation she despised for years and years. And now her ex-enemy, her best friend, the rich Firelord, was in love with her. A Southern Water Tribe peasant who was like a mother to nearly everyone she knew. She was a strong water bender. Fire bending was her opposite. Could water and fire exist without destroying each other?
“A-A…Aang,” Katara breathed, not making eye contact with Zuko.
Zuko nodded. “I understand. I’ll give you time to think.”
He walked back to the front door. He stopped there, and not looking back he said, “I’ll wait for you, Katara. I’ll wait as long as you want me to.”
Then he walked out the door and closed it behind him in a soft manner, the door not even making a sound.
Katara stood up immediately. She was a strong person and she would make a decision. She walked to a full-length mirror in a corner of the living room. As she smoothed her hair out with her hands, she looked at her herself closely in the mirror. She found herself asking the same question when she was in front of a mirror in the motel: Who am I?
An idea went through her mind.
She was never the person who spoke her herself, but now it seemed like a good idea to try. It might help her decide what she really wanted. She already seemed to try everything else, so why not this?
Katara stared at herself in the mirror harder, picturing that she was talking to someone in the future, maybe a couple years from now, or maybe not even that. She opened her mouth and spoke, “Hello, I’m Katara: Wife of Avatar Aang.”
Whoa. That came out a little strange. She grimaced and tried again, putting her words in a different order, “My name is Katara and I’m happily married to Aang.”
The line was believable, but it didn’t quite fit her as well as it should. She frowned even more.
Then unexpectedly Zuko’s kiss popped into her mind. It was like no other in her life. Not even the very first time she kissed Aang was compared to the amount of fireworks she’d felt with Zuko just a few moments ago.
Zuko, the named bounced in her head.
She looked at herself in the mirror again, and found she was blushing.
Hmm…Katara wondered. What if…?
She stood up straight and let the words flow out of her mouth, “My name is Katara, and I’m happily married to Zuko.”
That sounded different. Katara couldn’t help but somehow feel a little smug. She tried it another way.
“I’m Fire Lady Katara, married to Firelord Zuko,” she said.
She laughed out loud.
Fire Lady Katara, she thought. Hmm…Fire Lady Mai?
Katara made a face. Fire Lady Mai didn’t match at all. Fire Lady Katara though…that was magic.
“Fire Lady Katara,” she said aloud. “Fire Lady Katara! Fire Lady Katara!”
She laughed so hard at herself. She was officially insane.
“Katara?”
She turned around and saw Aang. He was dressed for the night and he looked at her with an eyebrow raised. This was not the man she wanted to see. She smirked slightly at him. Then she got an idea. She ran to him, grabbed his hand, and ran to sit the couch with him.
“What’s going on?” Aang asked just before they sat down.
“I’m going to ask you to do something,” Katara explained. “It might sound like a weird thing to demand, but I need you to do it…for me.”
“Uh…okay! You can have whatever you like!” Aang told her.
She didn’t say anything. Aang waited.
“I want you to kiss me,” she spat out.
Aang tried not to look shocked but it was clear in his eyes. His face was pleased, actually.
“Okay,” Aang replied in a happy tone.
He leaned in and gave her a simple kiss. Katara grabbed him closer to her, making it more romantic. She waited for the feeling — the one she felt with Zuko. The fireworks, the excitement, the electricity, the heat— where was it? Why wasn’t she feeling it in Aang’s kiss?
She let go of him fast, her breath coming back to her in a wild gasp.
“Katara! Are you okay?” Aang suddenly seemed worried. He placed his hand on her cheek in a gentle way.
“I’m fine,” she said fast as she took his hand from her face. “I’m exhausted.”
She got up and started to walk to her new bedroom.
“I thought you weren’t tired,” Aang accused in a flat voice.
Katara sighed. “I wasn’t before but I am now,” she muttered. “And I’m going to sleep for a very, very long time.”
