I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Song Sanctuary: Word Up! (Cameo) - Deathding - Fanpop
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
You know, the 80\'s was probably the absolute BEST time for music. Seriously, we got SO many amazing hits in that one decade it\'s not even funny. And I\'m NOT kidding when I say that a TON of my favorite songs come from that very decade, including Refugee by Tom Petty, Land Of Confusion by Genesis, the Tainted Love Cover by Soft Cell, the list is practically ENDLESS.
And here\'s one of the SILLIEST and yet most FUN songs I\'ve ever listened to. Ladies and gentle, boys and girls, moles and trolls alike, welcome to Song Sanctuary, where we take a look at the most classic of the classics. Today\'s review, Word Up by Cameo.
Released in 1986 and included in the album Word Up by Cameo, (See? It\'s even the name of the album! XD) this widely considered classic is more than it might seem at first.
It\'s a very Avant-Garde song, and I mean that in a good way. The music-video opens up with a guy yelling at Cameo through a megaphone to get on out, and then they... Start dancing?
OH GOD! IT\'S THE DANCING DISEASE OF DEATH! TAKE IT AWAY, TAKE IT AWAY! O_____X
But yeah, everyone just starts dancing. Not that you can blame them, because the use of synthesizer and snare drums in this song make it SO unbelievably catchy, along with the unique and satirical vocals.
And of course, the lyrics are pretty silly as well. I think my favorite part is when lead singer Larry Blackmon says "Wave your hands in the air like you don\'t care! :D" while everyone proceeds to do so. You can find that scene around 1:02 in the link to the music video above.
It\'s just really silly to see everyone COMPLETELY give up their supposed capturing of this guy and just dance along to the song. I mean, correct me if I\'m wrong, but they wanted Cameo arrested or captured in the beginning, right? But that just makes it all the more hysterical.
I also love the part when Larry says "You try to put on those airs and act real cool, but you\'ve got to realize that you\'re acting like fools!".
The most hilariously amusing part of all that is the fact that Larry Blackmon is wearing a codpiece during the ENTIRE song. If you don\'t know what that is, it\'s pretty much a covering flap or pouch that attaches to the front of the crotch of men\'s trousers and usually accentuates the genital area.
In other words, it\'s a small piece of equipment that is meant to draw attention to your genitalia, you see why I laughed my ass of when he said that now? XD
Also, Larry is a GREAT singer. He has this REALLY damn weird voice but it works so well for a song like this, especially considering how much fun the song is in general.
In fact, the entire song is really just about saying the awesomeness of a motto that is Word Up. AAAAAND that\'s about it. But if you were looking for subtlety in a song called Word Up in the first place, than you probably aren\'t as smart as you think you are.
The song isn\'t really perfect though. The lyrics are pretty straight-forward and short for a 4 1/2 minute song, and the codpiece can throw some people off, as well as the..... Different vocal-style.
But if you\'re looking for something different and crazy, as well as stupid fun, then you can\'t get much better than this wonderful melody.
In this article we talk about one of my all-time One-Ht Wonders, Word Up by Cameo. Don\'t forget to fan, favorite, and comment down below! ;)
