From the Mind of a Raven


Irene

I shoved the rusty key into the ancient looking lock. I turned it a hard left and the giant door creaked opened. The realtor was going on about the history of the house. But I already knew all that. As the door open a chill went through me, as if warning me of something in the house. I walked in, leaving the key in the lock, and had a look around the parlor. It was huge, with a high ceiling with grates in it. I saw something black move behind the grate and jumped back.
“Is there any history of rats in this house?”
“Uh…no. but as I was saying...”
“I know. It’s the oldest house in the county, built back before the Victorian Times. It's big like a castle. It was rewired when electricity came out, and it has running water. I did use to live here you know.”
That shut the women up
“You can leave now. I know my way around. I won’t get lost.”
The women nodded and left, pulling the key out of the door and setting it on the nearest table. The big door slammed behind her, making me jump.
“Why did I move back here?”
My voice echoed off the walls. I walked into what I call the front room. The house probably had a million rooms just like this. It also had a high ceiling. The walls were stone. Various works of art hung on the walls. I walked farther into the room and heard movement down the hall. I looked but saw nothing.
“I'm really going crazy.”
But I felt like some one was behind me so I whirled, and just as I did I saw something black go around the other hall corner.
“Rats!”
I ran down the hall after it but when I turned I rammed into a wall.
“Ouch!”
I backed up and looked the wall up and down. No door, no holes. I scratched my head.
“Wow. Mother your ghost is really messing with me”
As if to answer a door slammed somewhere in the house. I shuddered
“STOP THAT!! That’s the reason I left in the first place!”
The house fell silent and I sighed.
“Why did I move back?”

Raven

My heart pounded. She has returned! After 5 long years my beautiful student has returned. I stared out of the crack in the wall as she inspected the one I just vanished into. My heart raced, perhaps now my curses will be lifted! I stepped back into the tunnel. I strode up the small steps and opened yet another door. Appearing in a locked room, I pulled open the wall to revel a small self pulled elevator. I slid in and closed the wall behind me. I yanked the rope down, pulling the elevator up to the second floor where I got off into another locked room. Oh yes I had all my secret ways to see her. I strolled across the room and opened the wall reviling a grate that over looked the stairs. I stood behind the grate and watched as she struggled to pull a suit case up the stairs. Oh how I wanted to go out and help her but there would be consequences. A man who looked as I did had to tread carefully when in the presence of another. I whirled, my
cape flying grazing the grate, catching her attention.
“I'm going to have to set some rat traps”
Oh and her voice now matched her looks! She was the same little girl. Perhaps my curse would be broken.
