Chapter 4
Kassie just lounged around with Kyan, talking until it was time to set up the party. Boss and his wife were going into town for the night and was fine with them having a party, as long as they were responsible. Kassie walked outside in time to see a car load of girls arrive, all dressed in skimpy clothing, bikini ties visible through their shirts. Kassie backed up quickly, hoping to be able to sneak into her cabin and change into nicer clothing. She backed into something warm and firm.
“ Where do you think you’re going?” Kyan’s deep voice vibrated through her.
Kassie jumped and tripped. Kyan’s arms circled her and hauled her to her feet before she could land on her face.
“ Thanks.” She was rewarded with a slow grin from Kyan.
“ You didn’t answer my question.” He prodded, holding onto her arms when she tried to brush past him.
“ I was going to change into something nicer.” Kassie admitted softly.
“Why?” Kyan asked.
Kassie nodded toward the car load of girls who were surrounding Tommy and Dustin.
“ You don’t have to dress like that to look good. That’s the only way those girls can dress to get attention. They aren’t as beautiful as you.” Kyan said sincerely. Kassie wasn’t sure, but she was almost positive that what he said was the nicest thing a guy had ever said to her. She had to breathe to get her heart pumping again. She glanced at the girls again. More had joined them, along with some guys.
“ Well…If you think I look ok, I wont change.” Kassie finally said.
“ Good. And you look better than ok. You look great.”
Kassie looked down at her outfit in doubt. She had a pair of cut offs, and a dark pink tank top she had thrown on earlier. At least she had done her hair and make up.
“ Thanks again.” Kassie said and looked up at him. His light blue eyes sent shock waves through her yet again.
“ Shall we go meet them?” Kyan invited, slipping an arm around her and leading her out.
An hour later, people were dancing, eating and planning on getting ready to go swimming. Kassie was thrilled, Kyan had barely left her side the whole time. But there was this one girl, she thought her name was Melanie, who hadn’t taken her eyes off him the whole time.
“ Kass, go in your cabin and get your radio. We’re gonna hook it up down by the lake.” Dustin called.
“Oh all right.” Kassie sighed and slowly moved away from Kyan.
She quickly ran to her cabin, and opened the door. She searched and searched, but couldn’t find it. Suddenly, a thought hit her. She had given her radio to Tommy so he could sleep without hearing all the noises. And Dustin had known that. So why did he want her to come inside her cabin? The thought that hit her made her heart race and her mouth go dry. To get her away from Kyan. Kassie ran back and wrenched the door open. She could only see silhouettes from here because of the fire, but she could still make out the outline of Kyan’s broad shoulders. That wasn’t the only thing she could make out. There was someone sitting on his lap, curled around him, kissing him like there was no tomorrow. She had a feeling that someone was Melanie.
Something slithered into Kassie’s heart, turning it to stone. She felt one hot tear run down her face, followed by another. And another. She should have known better. Kyan had made her feel special. Valued. She had thought he had really liked her. But all of that was a façade. A stupid game to get what he wanted. Kassie frowned. What did he want? This didn’t make any sense. He couldn’t have used her to make someone else jealous, because he didn’t know anyone here. Kassie stopped trying to rationalize it. She knew what she had seen. And she also knew something else. If he thought he could play her like that, he had another thing coming.
