This chapter is pretty much explaining about the character's past, but I had to change a lot about Malik's past. Rate and comment and most importantly, enjoy.

Chapter 3: Ryou and Malik speak of their past

As the sun was rising upon the horizon, the entire Mediterranean sea shined. Like a sapphire the sparkling water looked so beautiful that one would want to touch it, but unlike a sapphire you won't feel the same smoothness when one actually holds the gem. Upon the sea, Osiris' crew had already woken. Some were hauling the sails up, while others looked out for their homeland of Egypt. Within the captain's quarters priest Seto was sitting at his desk placing his chin in his hands. He was anxious for the crew to scream “Land!”. He wanted to get home and celebrate the Pharaoh's birthday celebration that was tomorrow night. He and all the other high priests and priestess had planned this celebration for the year that prince Atem would become Pharaoh.

Down below the decks within the brig lied the future slaves to the Pharaoh. Yugi and Ryou woke up from the sounds of the rushing footsteps from the crew above. “They really want to go home don't they?” asked Ryou whispered as he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. Yugi nodded, then turned his head and still saw Malik's almost unconscious body still lying face down. Both Ryou and Yugi saw that the blood on his back had stopped bleeding, but most of his back was red from the dried up blood. “I hope Malik wakes up soon.” Yugi whispered to himself. “Oh yeah I almost forgot!” Yugi exclaimed in his head. He turned to face Ryou and finally asked him, “Ryou can tell me where you came from and how you got on the ship?” Ryou looked down at the floor with sad eyes. Yugi bit his bottom lip. “I'm sorry. You don't have to tell me.” apologized Yugi. “No, it's alright I'll tell you. After all you told me your story and it is best I should tell you mine.” Ryou explained bringing his head up and looked at Yugi. “Well as you already know I told you that I come from Athens. And well my life...” Ryou tried to speak but his eyes faced the floor again. “No I should tell. He should know about my past.” Ryou took in a breath and finally brought his head up and looked at Yugi with determined eyes. “I had lived with my mother and sister. I have a father, but he rarely came home because he was always trading around or sometimes even outside Greece. So I only saw him once maybe twice in one year. I never had any friends so I was always alone, but my mother and sister knew how to cheer me up.” He paused and looked at his hands, then back at Yugi. “That is until they both died from this strange disease that hit the city. I remembered seeing my sister throwing up in the mornings, sometimes even at night, and I remembered seeing my mother getting these large purple bumps on her porcelain skin and her forehead was always too hot touch. Both my mother and sister grew weaker each day because for some reason they never had an appetite. They both died when I was eight, so I was alone and plus on top of that, I rarely saw my father.” Ryou softly wrapped his hand around his neck because he could feel a small lump forming inside his throat. Yugi could already tell before Ryou told his story that he didn't want to talk about his past. “Ryou you don't have to fin--” “Yugi it's alright, I'll finish.” Ryou said once again trying his best not to choke up. Ryou drew in some more breaths. “Since my father didn't come back I was once again all alone. As the weeks went by, I didn't have any gold to pay the tax man that came everyday. I soon lost my house and I was forced to live on the street during the first few weeks of winter. Each day felt like an eternity to me since I had no food, money, home, or my father. But then fortuned smiled upon one dark winter's night. These two slave traders came to me and said I could work for them. The pay was small and I had to live in a slave house, but it was better than freezing to death. But after spring was coming to an end they weren't able to afford me, so I was taken to the docks and sold. So most of my life I have been taken in and out of Greece sold as a slave to work for many different families in different countries in Europe. When I was brought back into Greece the ship Osiris had come for trading. When they came to the slaves I was the only one they took. I don't know why, but I remember overhearing that they said I could be an excellent slave for 'him'.”

In the time that Ryou was explaining his story, Malik wearily opened his eyes. He tried to get up, but the pain from last night's torture had made his body weak, his muscles were too tense to move, and he could smell the dry blood that stained his back and clothing. “Why, why... haven't I gone through enough pain in my life?” he whispered angrily. “That bastard Seto, one day I'll get him.” he swore to himself as tried to use whatever strength he had to get up. “I swear that I'll-- ahh!” Malik screamed in pain, he felt as if his body was being struck with ten sets of cat o' nine tails. “Malik don't get up! You're only going to make the wounds worse!” exclaimed a voice. “I don't need you're help-- oh it's you two.” Malik scorned as he saw Ryou's and Yugi's faces pressed against the bars. Malik glared at the both of them especially at Ryou. “Don't even try to talking to me. It's because of you two I got one of the worst punishments.” Both Yugi and Ryou stepped back. They knew Malik would be angry, but not this much. Yugi then remembered the plate of food he and Ryou had saved for him. Yugi picked up the food and placed it next to Malik's cell wall. “Oh please I don't need your generosity.” Malik snorted. “At least eat, after all we have a long journey ahead of us.” said Yugi as he pushed the plate closer, so that Malik could place his hand through the cell and grab the food without having to get up. “What?” Malik eyed him curiously. Yugi got a little closer to Malik's cell. “We are going to live in the Pharaoh's palace and work. Including you.” Yugi explained. “Like hell. I not going to work to that overfed, overdressed, self-absorbed prince.” said Malik sounding very annoyed. “Well you have to.” said Ryou. “Why? Please tell me why I should work for the 'almighty' Pharaoh?” Malik asked sarcastically. “Yugi saved your life by telling the priest that you could work in the palace. If it wasn't for him you would be strapped up to the mast again so that the priest could whip you.” Ryou explained. Malik said nothing, instead he looked at Yugi's caring yet serious eyes. “Yugi saved my life? I appreciate that he helped, but it's their faults that my back has more scars. Still, I already carry something more heavier and painful then these wounds.” Malik said in his mind as he closed his eyes and remembered what had happened.

Malik still said nothing, instead he grabbed the plate of food and slowing ate a piece of bread. Both Yugi and Ryou sighed with relief since he finally started eating the food. “You know... as I was opening my eyes I overheard your story Ryou” said Malik as his lavender eyes met Ryou's brown eyes. “Really, how much?” Ryou asked turning his eyes away from Malik and onto his plate of food. “Well up to the part about you losing your home. That's sounds really tough.” said Malik as he pushed the pieces of meat away from the goat's cheese. Ryou nodded still looking at the plate. “Malik umm... this is probably not the best time to ask, but where did you come from?” Yugi asked almost regretfully. Malik swallowed the bread, closed his eyes letting out a slow sigh, and looked at Yugi. Yugi slightly stepped back. “I always knew one day someone would ask me about where I came from, but I never thought it would be now.” Malik said slowly as he turned to face both Yugi and Ryou. “Well unlike you two I was not born in a city, I was born underground.” Yugi tilted his head and Ryou raised an eyebrow. “Basically I was born into a clan that lived in an underground city some miles out of Cairo. My family lived in complete isolation away from all human contact. We all lived like shadows, nobody knew of our existence. We were never allowed to leave because my family was worried about if someone followed us, they would know the secret.” Malik explained sounding concerned. “What secret?” Yugi asked. “My family has kept the secret of the Pharaoh's life and power hidden for many years.” Malik paused and took a drink from the cup, carefully not letting one drop fall from his mouth. “My father was the leader and for a long time he prayed to the Gods that he wanted a son to take his place. His wish had finally been granted.” Malik looked at the ground blankly, yet still focused on telling the story. “Life for me was terrible because each day my father made me study the ancient scriptures and I had to learn to 'love' the Pharaoh.” Ryou and Yugi nodded their heads. “I guess thats one reason why he hates the Pharaoh.” Yugi thought. “Then on my tenth birthday, my father craved the ancient scriptures of the Pharaoh's secret on my back.” Ryou and Yugi's eyes widen at that. “What? Why did he do that?” Ryou asked. “Because I was the heir to the Tomb Keepers. I was to inherit the secret, all of the men in my family have been given the cravings.” Malik explained as he clenched his fists in anger, quietly grinding his teeth. “And on that day my anger and rage towards the Pharaoh began.” he said angrily. Malik then closed his eyes.

“Each day that passed felt like a year with no end. I was forever in the darkness of the underground, forever wishing that I could at least step out from the darkness and breathe the fresh air, feel the sun with all my body, hear the sounds of creatures that walked on land, and see everything from the smallest home to the great Nile. Then one day, fate had smiled down on me. The doors that led to the outside world were unlocked. Since everyone in the city was still sleeping I decided to leave, but I would return before anyone would notice. As I stepped outside I felt so happy, my desire to go outside had finally happened. I walked a few miles through the desert and found myself in a marketplace in Cairo. I looked at everything that was there, all the items and all the people that passed by me. Yet I still felt lost since I was in a world that I had never seen before in my life. I thought fate had finally gave me something good, but sometimes fate likes to play a little game, a game that can change someones life forever. Within an hour or so I walked home, but I made sure no one had followed me. But when I came home I soon heard the screams of women and children in the city, I then realized that I forgot to close the door to the underground city. I ran through the city to see what had happened. I saw that buildings were set fire, women desperately grabbed their children, men tried to protect their families, but they were all killed. More than half of the population were lying dead on the ground, some were decapitated others were impaled with swords and spears. I tried to find my father, but I was stopped by large men. I knew that these men must have been the thieves that entered the city. I tried to fight back, but they grabbed me and beat me at least half to death. Some few moments passed and the city had turned quiet, the thieves left and everything was destroyed. When I was able to pull myself together I tried to look for my father...” Malik paused biting his lower lip. “I found him, dead. There he was, stripped of his shirt, a spear through his heart, my father... lying in a pool of his own blood.” said Malik quietly as burning, salty tears ran down his face. “The last thing I remember was my father with whatever strength he had, brought his head up and glared at me. The same violet eyes he had were turning black, and then told me 'Malik you betrayed us all'. His head fell to the ground making a soft thud noise. I then looked at my dead father, I could feel my heart sinking lower and lower inside of me.” More tears fell from his eyes onto the his hands. Malik roughly placed his head in his hands letting every piece of sadness fall within his tanned fingers. Ryou and Yugi bent their heads down, they felt so much sympathy for Malik. They hung on his every word during the story, they both couldn't help but let some tear fall from their eyes. They knew Malik's life was going to be sad, but not that tragic.

Some few hours passed and finally the one word that the entire crew had been anxious to hear was spoken, “LAND!” At the sound of that word, Osiris' crew rushed along the deck like rats in cellar. Seto then stepped out from his quarters and saw the crew getting ready to dock. “Guards!” Seto yelled. Four guards came to him. “Yes Seto-sama.” said a guard formally. “Get the prisoners from downstairs, and once they are off of the ship place them on horses. I don't want the Pharaoh's gifts to become more damaged, especially that Malik.” Seto said still remembering Malik's face after the torture. The guards then got Yugi, Ryou, and Malik out from the cells and placed more rope around their wrists, only this time they didn't tie it tightly like last time. Once the ship docked on the port the three teenagers were placed individually on three horses. One of the guards looked at Malik's still blood stained back and faced Seto. “Seto-sama what should we do about that one's back?” the guard asked pointing to Malik. “He will be taken care of before the celebration. Now come we must return to the palace, for the Pharaoh's birthday celebration is tomorrow evening and we must continue getting it ready!” Seto ordered as he got on his horse. “Well what's going to happen to us now?” Ryou thought as he stared blankly at the horse's mane. “Are we forever to be treated like dirt in the palace?” Malik wondered as he looked at his wrists wrapped in rope. “Or are things going to be different then what we expect?” Yugi too wondered, looking at the town that was some miles away from the dock.

Well this chapter pretty much sums up about where the others come from. Poor Ryou and Malik I find both of their pasts sad, not just one. Well at least they are finally in Egypt. What will happen next? You'll find out in chapter 4.
