Yuna’s story
Chapter one: The Academy
Yuna’s POV
“Hurry up Yuna, or you’ll be late,” my mother said.
“Okay I’m done,” I announced as I got up from the table.
“Have a marvelous day Yuna,” my mom said as she handed me my lunch.
“Okay mom,” I said.
She put her hands on my cheeks and kissed my forehead. I could smell her, she never used perfume but she always smelled wonderful.
“Okay get going,” she said as she smiled at me and gave me a quick hug.
“Okay,” I said as I walked out of the kitchen. Just then, Shelke, my little sister, ran down the stairs and gave me a big hug that almost knocked me over. She looked up at me and said, “Have a great day big sis, and when you get back we can play together! Okay?”
“Yeah, okay, but I’ve got to go right now,” I said. Then I hastily put on my shoes and scooped up my bag and put the strap around my neck. “See you later, bye!” I shouted back over my shoulder as I opened the door.
“Bye bye,” my mom and Shelke called, as I stepped outside and shut the door behind me and started running down the street toward the academy. My mom’s name is Marren. She’s the most beautiful, nicest, person in the whole world. She has white, long beautiful hair that goes down to her hips; her eyes are usually a very light lilac color but her eyes change colors depending on her mood; she always smells wonderful; and she’s really smart.
Mom is actually from another world, called “Sukai,” the land of the summoners. She fell in love with my Dad, Koroku, and came to live here. She learned everything about this world and became a medical ninja.
My dad, Koroku, has pretty, long black hair that he puts into a pony tail, but he calls it his “manly tail,” and says that “only real man have long hair.” He has black eyes. He can be really funny and he’s really strong. He and my uncle are the heads of our clan, the Uchiha clan.
My little sister, Shelke, just turned five. She has short brown hair. She’s the only one in my close family that has brown hair. She has black eyes. Shelke loves to play with me and help my mom around the house.
My older brother, Haku, is fourteen. He has white hair, like Mom, and like my dad, he also has a “manly tail,” that I like to play with. He has black eyes. He’s really strong -- stronger than my dad.
Every body calls Haku a genius. He graduated from the academy when he was six and was the top of his class; mastered the sharingan at seven; became a chuunin at nine; and, just became an ANBU captain last year.
I love to train with Haku. We used to play together and hang out together. We used to do everything together, but now we barely ever see each other because he’s almost always away on missions, and I’m stuck in the academy.
I’m Shizuka Yuna Uchiha. My great uncle on my mom’s side wanted us to have another formal name so Haku, Shelke, and I all have formal names, but we almost never use them. I’m nine years old. I have white hair, just like Haku and my mom, that only goes down to my shoulders. I have black eyes. I’m top of my class in the academy.
“Good morning Yuna,” said Gakie sensei from her desk. “The first one here again I see. Very good, keep it up.”
“Yes Sensei, thank you,” I said.
“You’re the only one who ever shows up exactly on time,” she said mostly to herself. Then she looked back down to her paper work. I went over to my usual seat by the windows.
About two minutes later, people started showing up; first the girls that where supposedly “prefect,” but didn’t really care about learning. I don’t know what they care about, but whatever it is, it’s pretty stupid. A little while later only a few people were still missing. Gakie sensei stood up and told every body to be quiet. Then she looked at the rows of students and said, “Tomaki, Shiki, Marowko, and Mari aren’t here yet.”
“As usual,” whispered the kid next to me. I think his name was Asbelt.
Gakie sensei said, “Has anyone seen them?” There where murmurs of “no’s” among the students. Just then Mari burst through the door, tripped and fell over flat on her face. Laughter erupted from the class. I didn’t laugh. Mari got up blushing and said, “Sorry I’m late, again Gakie sensei,” the looked down at her shoes.
“Well, if you get to your seat right now, you technically won’t be late,” Gakie sensei said in a slightly annoyed and sympathetic tone.
“Yes Sensei,” Mari said gratefully. “Thank you Sensei.” Then she quickly took her seat next to the boy named Asbelt.
“You really should try to get here earlier,” Asbelt said in a matter of fact tone.
“Oh shut up, four eyes!” Mari hissed back at him. “It’s not my fault that my haughty older sister broke my alarm clock!”
Mari had green eyes and reddish orange hair that was just a little longer then mine. She was always almost late for some reason or another. None of the girly girls liked her because she was too much of a tom boy. Also the boys didn’t like her because she was a girl and because she could beat them up if she wanted to.
Asbelt had short, spiky, purple hair and purple eyes, and he wore glasses. The boys didn’t like him because he was smarter than just about all of them and because he was he bit of a smart aleck.
That’s how it was with a lot of the kids in the academy: they didn’t have friends because they were too smart, too lazy, too shy, or too what ever; there’s was a whole list. In my case, I’m too smart, too strong, and too shy.
I remembered something Haku said to me when I asked him why people didn’t like me. He said, “It’s not that people don’t like you. They’re just jealous because you’re better than they are. It happens to a lot of the kids in the academy, the ones who are better than the rest, or the ones who haven’t quite blossomed yet. But what most kids don’t get is that the academy is just the beginning, just barely getting started, and that your real friends will be the people that are chosen to be in your squad.” And what Haku said was true: the only thing that matters in the academy is learning the very basics; it’s just a foot hold.
Just then Tomaki, Shiki, and Marowko, came bursting in. They are almost always late. This time Gakie sensei wasn’t as nice as with Mari because these three had cut school yesterday and Gakie sensei had been very angry when she found out. Now she gave them a very good lecture and threatened to tell their parents, and gave them after school detention and then sent them to their seats.
Indoor classes went quickly. It always went quickly for me because it was too easy, and it wasn’t any fun if it wasn’t at least challenging.
Then Gakie sensei said, “Okay everybody hand in your papers and get ready to go outside for taijutsu practice.” I had finished my paper five minutes ago. I usually liked taijutsu practice, at least it was fun. We all got up and handed in our papers and then all filed outside.
“Okay everybody. Today we’ll be starting off with our balance practice,” Gakie sensei said after everyone was in the practice yard. There were groans from some of the students. “Let’s get started!” Gakie sensei said enthusiastically. Balance practice for today was tight-rope walking over a pond, boring!
We all formed a line on one side of the pond and then one by one tried to walk across. Almost all of the girls fell in and had to wrap up in towels. Most of the boys made it across. Asbelt got about half way then lost his balance and fell in; Mari made it across with not too much difficulty; I walked right across with no trouble.
Next we did some shuriken practice. The way they made you do it was really easy. I had been practicing the shuriken jutsu with Haku for years, and my class had been practicing the shuriken jutsu for a while now, so I got all the targets. You’d think that we would have moved on to some thing more advanced by now, but we hadn’t because most of the others didn’t even get one target.
Then Gakie sensei said that it was time for lunch. We all got our lunches and then came back outside. I sat in my usual place, which was under a tree with my back against the trunk. I opened my boxed lunch and was about to start eating some sushi when I looked over at Mari. She was sitting under another tree near by and was looking at every one else eating. She didn’t have any food. Some times she didn’t bring lunch, usually because her parents where gone on missions and her older sister left really early every morning and would forget to make lunch for Mari. In her rush to get out of the house she also would forget to make lunch for herself.
I looked down at my lunch. Then I got up and walked over to Mari. “Hey, um...Mari, would you like to share my lunch?” I asked awkwardly. She stared at me in surprise and smiling said, “Yeah, thanks.” I smiled back and sat down right by her and started to split the sushi between us.
“Thanks, Yuna,” Mari said.
“No problem,” I said as I handed her some sushi. We finished our food in silence.
Then Mari looked up and opened her mouth like she was going to say something but just then Gakie sensei called for every one to come back in. I got up and walked away, but Mari stayed sitting down.
The rest of the day passed very quickly. Mari and I didn’t get to talk.
“Okay classes are all done for today, don’t forget to do your homework, I’ll see you all on Monday.” Gakie sensei said. There was cheers from several students and every one packed up there things and ran out side.
As I was leavening the school yard Mari appeared at my side and opened her mouth again to say something, but was cut off again. “Mari, Mari!” shouted Junko.
Junko, Mari’s older sister, was about Haku’s age and is a chuunin in the cipher corps. She has long reddish orange hair and green eyes and wore glasses. The two sisters look very much alike.
Junko ran up to Mari and grabbed Mari’s shoulder and out of breath said, “Mari, Mom and Dad just came back to the village and are going to be home any minute!”
“Really?!” Mari shouted back.
“Yeah, come on!” Junko said then turned to me. “Hey you’re Haku’s little sis, right?”
I nodded and mumbled “yeah.”
“Prefect timing,” Junko said. “Can you give this to your bro the next time you see him?” Junko rummaged in her bag and pulled out a large envelope and handed it to me. “Make sure his gets it, thanks.” She grabbed Mari’s hand and said “come on there going to be there any minute!”
“See you later Yuna!” Mari said smiling over her shoulder as she and Junko ran towards their house.
I stared after them feeling like a mini tornado had just swept by. Everyone was gone from the school yard now and I stood all alone feeling both happy for Mari and sad that she was gone. Today had been the first time that I had really hit it off with her.
I looked down at the large envelope in my hands and wondered what was in it. “Probably something for a mission,” I said out loud as I put the envelope in my bag. I looked around even though there wasn’t anyone there, and then started for home.
