“I would like to know why, if science can unravel something as beautiful as music, why it cannot posit a solution for a school teacher and a King.” Anna said, sounding almost like a question. Tears in her eyes, it took all she had to look at him.
“The manner in which people might understand such new possibilities is also process of evolution.” He replied.
“Everything in Siam has it’s time.” She nodded at her own words.
“Even if King is also wanting it to be different.” At this statement she was trying not to break down into tears. He was saying what she had wanted to hear. She not only wanted him but he wanted her as well. And it wasn’t only physical as it had been on the beach. They respected one another which was unheard of for an Oriental regent and an English woman. They cared what the other thought and how the other felt.

“Anna,” he used her given name, “Stay.” He had the most pleading look in his eyes, yet, ever the King, he still looked regal and as though he wasn’t making a request that he so desperately wanted.
“You make it so hard to say ‘no’.” She looked down to her skirts.
He walked over to her and gathered her hands in his, placing one on his shoulder and cupping the other as he had done the night they danced.
“Then say ‘yes’.” He studied her face and brought one of her hands to his heart. “Until now, Madam Leonowens, I did not understand supposition man could be satisfied with only one woman.” He then lifted up that same hand and held her gaze until his lips brushed the skin on her knuckles. He was being as gentle as he could, trying to convey his love, and brought her hand back to his chest.
He began to move them, swaying but Anna could not dance. His face so close, his eyes caressing her the way they did, she lifted up and kissed him.
It wasn’t gentle this time, it was almost desperate. He responded the same way. He didn’t want to let her go. Their arms flew around one another and in the middle of gasping for air he said “Say ‘yes’. Stay with me, Anna. I already have 64 children. King wishes no more to privately visit Concubines or any wife.”
Was he saying what she thought he was? “You would be with only me, your Majesty, for the rest of your life?”
“As Siam is, I could not marry you or publicly show our devotion but yes, I want only you. And when we are alone, please, call me Mongkut.” He ran a hand over her hair, brushing back a few loose strands. “Anna.” He said simply.
“Yes.”
The short answer sent a smile to his face for he knew she was accepting. “I will have everything arranged. You will move back to palace grounds so that King- I mean to say, I, can more easily...” He seemed lost for words.
“Have ‘private visits’ with me?” Anna offered.
He smiled. “Yes but I must tell something of great importance.” Anna waited in silence. “I love you.”
“And I, you, Mongkut.” His smile broadened and he said “Come, let me show you.”
Anna didn’t know what he was talking about but he was moving inside the palace, hand placed on her back as if to lead her. They rounded a few corners and came to a staircase. Near it, in a small nook was a marble Elephant. He pulled on one of the tusks, using it as a lever and she saw a crack appear behind it.
He pushed it open to reveal a passage way. Grabbing her by the hand, he lead her further until there was a panel in front of them, they seemed to be at a dead end. That is, until he gave a light shove and the panel slid open.
It was his chambers. Even before he said anything, she knew where they were. It was so ornate and elaborate. Then again, he was the King. She would expect nothing less.
“None of King’s Concubines or wives have ever been in his private quarters. But Anna is always welcome in them. And King... that is to say, I would be honored if you would make use of this entrance as often as you wish.”
He could not promise her a marriage nor could he give her any kind of romantic attention in public but he regarded her above all the other women. It was already so easy to see. The way he looked to her and included her in academic discussion. The way he asked her what she thought of his children. They already spent massive amounts of time together. The only ones who would catch wind of a deeper formed relationship would be his mistresses whom he no longer would visit.
Without speaking a word, she began undoing her hair and he circled to the back of her to undo her dress. She knew this man as intimately as you could, for she already knew the depth of his mind and now she would know the feel of his body.
It was not on paper but Anna was about to make love to her second and final husband. She was finally healed and whole again.
Hours and several climaxes later, Anna had one thought: I could be with child.
The king lay beside her with his eyes closed but still, a smirk came to his lips. “Yes, you could.”
“I said that allowed?”
“Yes, and I, Ma’am, would be overjoyed to be a father to another.”
“But-” She began yet got cut off by one of his fingers on her lips.
“Shh”, he said “Buddha would tell you to not search for a solution which will present it’s self.”
Anna had no idea what he meant but Mongkut seemed perfectly at ease. What did not worry him, would not worry her. She fell asleep in his arms, thinking about how adorable a child of theirs would be.
