Elena stared wide-eyed at the giant living room. The dark haired boy draped a blanket over her shoulders.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
Another man and a woman entered the room. They were much older and she guessed them to be the boy’s parents. The giant man followed behind them. They sat down on the couch opposite of Elena. The giant stood behind them. The boy returned from the kitchen and handed Elena a cup of hot chocolate.
“Thank you,” she whispered again. The boy walked over and sat next to the adults. Elena could see similarities in their faces and guessed that they were related.
“Are you feeling alright?” The woman on the sofa asked. Elena nodded.
“Let me introduce everyone,” the man next to her said. “I am Artemis Fowl senior and this is my wife, Angelina Fowl.” The woman nodded. “This is my son, Artemis Fowl II,” he gestured to the dark haired boy. “And this is Butler, our son’s bodyguard,” the giant nodded.
“Nice to meet you,” she said.
“Now that you know us,” the woman said, leaning towards Elena. “Why don’t you tell us a little about what happened to you.”
Elena took a deep breath. “My name is Elena Williams, but you can call me Lena. I was born and raised in Ireland. My parents died when I was 4 and I have been growing up in foster homes and orphanages ever since. But then, from ages twelve to fourteen, those years are blank. I can’t remember them. Apparently I disappeared and when I showed up again I couldn’t remember anything. The doctors said I had a type of amnesia that makes me forget those years because they cause too much pain or something. I lived in an orphanage for a year and worked to make money and then I was kidnapped by three creatures. They looked like people but they were very disproportioned. I escaped by chance when one of the creature forgot to tighten then ropes on my hands and then I ran and I remember the car, then I woke up here. “ Elena glanced around the room. She had decided not to tell the Fowls the whole story.
“Oh you poor thing,” Mrs. Fowl said, putting her hand on her heart.
“Oh no please don’t be worried,” Elena protested. “I’m really okay. I have had a rough life, but it has made me strong.”
“That’s good,” said Mr. Fowl. “Why don’t you tell us a little about yourself?”
“Okay. I am 16 years old. I’m kind of a loner but everyone I meet always tells me that I have a very attractive personality. I love to read and learn new things. I am a very hard worker too.” Elena smiled shyly. She glanced at the faces in the room. Mr. Fowl was leaning back on the sofa with a small smile across his face, Mrs. Fowl still had her hand over her heart and her eyes were soft with compassion, Butler glanced around the room every few seconds, his face hard, and Artemis’s face showed no expression as he continued to stare at Elena with a strange look.
“So what will you do now?” Mrs. Fowl asked finally.
“I’m too old to be in an orphanage anymore, and I don’t really like foster care, so I guess I’ll try to find a job or maybe two and find a small apartment to live in…” Elena trailed off.
“I know!” Mrs. Fowl exclaimed. “Our maid, Juliet Butler, is off training right now in Japan. Why don’t you stay here and work for us? We have a lot of extra rooms and plenty of work to be done.”
Elena was taken aback. These people opened their home to me and now they are offering me a job and shelter? she thought. How nice of them.
“Th-that would be wonderful,” Elena stammered, still amazed at this families generosity.
“Great. Tomorrow, I shall fill you in on what needs to be done, but right now you need some sleep,” Mrs. Fowl said. “Arty,” she turned to the boy. “please show Lena where her room is. They same one she was in before is fine.” Artemis nodded and stood up. He signaled for Butler to stay here and gestured for Elena to follow him. Elena stood up and walked after the dark haired boy. He led her up a flight of stairs and down a hallway. He opened a door to reveal Elena’s new bedroom.
“There is a bathroom through that door,” he said, pointing to a door on the far right side of the room. He handed her a key to the room and shut the door.
Elena looked around the room. There was an old four-poster bed with sheer white curtains hanging around it. The bed had a maroon comforter and pillows with a white sheet and fitted sheet beneath them. There was a huge window that overlooked the front yard of the manor with blue curtains hanging from it. A dark red rug with silver designs on it cover the floor around the bed and a huge wooden dresser stood on the east wall of the room. A mirror the size of a large bathtub sat on top of the dresser.
Elena walked over to the bed and realized that see didn’t have any clothes to change into. She decided not to deal with that until the morning and climbed into the bed. The mattress sank down with her weight. The feather pillow felt like heaven ass Elena lay her head down. Warm from the comforter around her body and she slowly drifted off to sleep smiling.
“Thank you,” she whispered.
