I'm submitting this in chapters. This is my dream romance of Arthur and Guinevere. Just imagine that Gwen has finally picked between Arthur and Lancelot and has chosen Lancelot. Arthur being gracious has decided to go on, but feels empty. Enter a new chapter ...

The sun was rising a glorious golden on the road to Camelot. The weather was very warm for summer, and the only noises were the wind whispering to the leaves of trees running by the way, and the rhythmic plod of two horses-and a cart running tracks through the dry path.

In the arena a group of knights were training under the guidance of Prince Arthur. The training was routine, mundane, repeated a hundred times to perfect their methods and keep in shape. Some of the older knights, back from when King Uther first formed the knights of Camelot, sat out, watching and guiding a younger generation. And some of the older knights were sitting with the king himself in the counsel chambers. The older knights and the King had grown up around each other, fought together and perceived each other more as friends, the first circle cast when the war against magic began.

As the day pressed on, training finished and the knights retired for lunch and to clean up. Arthur made his way back to his room where a disorderly Merlin, attempting to change the sheets on the bed, had managed to throw sheets everywhere and get caught up with a pillowcase around his ankles and his arms lost in the duvet.
Unsurprised, Arthur pulled a face and greeted him with a grunt, noisily pulling out a clean shirt from one of the closets.
“You know, just once Merlin, I’ll come back to find my chambers tidy.”
“Hey,” said Merlin as he bent down to retrieve the pillowcase off the floor “I’m almost done, it’s not as bad as it looks … really”
“Yeah,” Arthur huffed sarcastically, and yanked off his tunic to change ”Just get me something to eat and hurry up. I need you to polish my boots, press my jacket for tonight, I can’t look casual for my fathers banquet … oh and run me a bath would you, I’ve been sweating all morning in this heat.”
Merlin just rolled his eyes.

Later in the evening the sky had blackened and the waxing moon was bright. There were knights and inhabitants of the castle chatting idly over tables in the grand hall, all gathered with royalty and their guests for a banquet hosted by the King. At the highest table the King sat with his son Prince Arthur on his right. The lady Morgana used to sit on his other side-his ward who he considered to be his daughter in more than one way. He felt her loss keenly when Morgause took her, and he waited for any news of her, waited for her return. Nothing. Uther couldn’t look at her empty space anymore so he had her chair removed and changed seating arrangements. On the highest table along with the remaining royal family the kings adviser Gauis, the royal genealogist Geoffrey of Monmouth, Indik of Pellinor- a valued teacher of swords craft and horse riding- and a few other valued friends.
Uther was talking with an old knight down the table on his left who was only slightly younger than himself, as well as Geoffrey of Monmouth. They were talking idly of up and coming feasts and celebrations in the Camelot; Arthur was listening in, trying to look interested but fingering the edge of his goblet out of boredom.
“We’ve nearly finished eating, I think your guest may be a little late.” Uther was saying. The older knight had dark hair, streaked a little with ash that confessed to his age. His face was browned and lightly etched with lines, his eyes droopy, and he gave a little apologetic smile.
“My daughter has been away for a long time, she’s probably just getting her bearings.” His voice was odd: authorative but quiet, respectful but confident in his justifications.
Uther nodded and finished what he was eating. He “mmmed” in agreement, “ I can barely remember her, it’s been many years since she lived her in Camelot was it not?”
“Yes, 10 years in January. I sent away just after my wife died.” Uther looked sympathetic, he knew better than most the loss of a wife, and what it could do to a man. He also knew the effects it could have on a child growing up without a maternal presence. At hearing this Arthur had even gotten interested. There were so few people his age in Camelot, and even fewer who it was acceptable to talk with and be around. To find someone like that who had also something in common with him like losing a parent would be very interesting.
