Leadership is a timeless topic. We have always encountered it wherever we go and in whatever field of endeavor. Many people say it is through experience that we can fully practice it. Although this may have a tinge of truth in it, it clearly takes more than long tenure and high performance skills to become a good leader. The process of identifying, developing, training and mentoring should be a thought, not a reward. Many professional people have tried to get their hands into leading people but have failed.
Leadership isn’t some sort of manipulation. Real leadership is reviewed to depend heavily on integrity and respect and also holds high and extreme impact. It alone can make a difference on the result of your performance, whether to succeed or fail. It also does not only rely on the strength of one person. It involves other people’s participation and objective outlook. In other words, it revolves around a person and on how other people are influenced by him.
Leadership may seem too complicated and there are a lot of complaints on its real nature. Until now, it is even debatable to which category it falls into. A lot of people think that this is a characteristic which is intrinsic and intuitive. Others believe that it is already in human nature to have a sense of leadership and would only take some pruning and honing to muster out. Few believe that only the chosen ones inherit this kind of traits; that there are meant to be more followers than leaders. Sometimes it is considered intelligence, according to birth order, socioeconomic status and child rearing experience. Nevertheless, the perspective about leadership revolves on boring foundations which incites thousands of researches and studies despite unproven conclusions.
However, leadership should not be too complicated. It should not be analyzed too deeply or else, the real essence can be lost. Above all, leadership should not be boring and are not meant for professionals alone.
As a professor in University in Jakarta in Indonesia had emphasized, “People desire a “leadership refresh” in their organizations. Employees want leaders that are likeable, understand their needs, can authentically motivate people and know how to energize a workplace culture to generate the best results for the organization”. If you are too serious, you can never understand the role you are playing.
