Super Star Rajesh Khanna turns 68 & Twinkle Khanna turns 36 on 29th December, 2010.

Mumbai, Dec 29 :

Bollywood's first superstar Rajesh Khanna (or, Jatin Khanna) turned 68 on Wednesday, while his eldest daughter Twinkle (Tina) celebrated her 36th birthday the same day.

Here are some trivia about Bollywood's 'King of Romance':

Rajesh Khanna was once accused of lewd conduct on the sets of 'Anokha Rishta'. The young lady, who raised a hue and cry, was Sabeeha, daughter of yesteryear superstar Ameeta. Eventually nothing came out of the allegations and all was forgotten.

Rajesh Khanna used to charge half of his fees for Hrishikesh Mukherjee in films like "Anand", "Namak Haram" and "Naukar" as he always had author-backed roles for him.

Rajesh Khanna had gifted a big bungalow to Anju Mahendru in Mumbai. A lot of Hindi films have been shot in this bungalow.

In the late 1960s, Khanna dated Anju Mahendru. The couple eventually drifted apart, and split in the early-1970s. After the separation, Tina Munim was romantically linked with Khanna, but their relationship was short-lived.

Rajesh Khanna-Mumtaz made an incredibly famous and successful pairing in the late 60s to early 70s, and gossip has it that they were also lovers. For reasons unknown, in 1973 Rajesh Khanna married the up and coming (and only 16 years old) Dimple Kapadia. Supposedly, Mumtaz was devastated and married the African business tycoon Mayur Madhwani, leaving India and Bollywood behind. Of course, neither of them has confirmed this, but Mumtaz has hinted that there was a big fallout between her and the industry before she left.

Kishore Kumar did not charge any fee for Rajesh Khanna's 'Alag Alag'.

Kishore Kumar was the original choice for Rajesh Khanna's role in 'Anand'.

Rajesh Khanna reportedly saw Nishipadma [the orignal Bengali movie] 24 times before zeroing on the role of Anand Babu in 'Aradhana'.

Shakti Samanta had initially started 'Palay Khan' with Rajesh Khanna. But five years later, he roped in Jackie Shroff for the title role. Also, son Ashim Samanta directed the film eventually.

Rajesh Khanna started wearing 'Guru Kurtas' in most of his films in the '80s. The reason said is that he was feeling bad about his weight. So, by wearing these kurtas, he though, he could hid his flab.

Rajesh Khanna started 'Jai Shiv Shankar', a movie produced and directed by him, and got his ex-wife Dimple Kapadia to play a lead role opposite him. But just as their marriage, the movie also failed to see the daylight.

Rajesh Khanna was a member of Parliament for the Congress Party, from the New Delhi constituency, where he won the 1992 by-election, retaining his seat until the 1996 election.

What happened to the film you were supposed to do with your ex-husband Rajesh Khanna?

That too didn't happen. But I am looking forward to someone casting us together. I should do at least one film with him, otherwise I'll feel incomplete.

He’s done his fair share of cameo appearances especially when Bollywood wanted a foreign face but there’s much more to Tom Alter, as his filmography proves. And, be warned, he doesn’t quite relish the gora tagR 30; “I’m not a foreigner,” he says, the firmness quite palpable even via e-mail. He’s done films, — potboilers...

Dinesh Raheja sees the legendary side of the yesteryear superstar

I HAVE never liked anybody's work or persona (not even my own) so consistently that I became a fan. I have loved performances more than performers. However, there was a phase in the 1970s, when I was in my impressionable years, a pan-cultural phenomenon called Rajesh Khanna swept the film industry; and all roads led to cinema houses showing Khanna's films.

The word superstar became common usage thanks to him. Amitabh had once reminisced about his early days: "I became...

Amar Prem redefined the right time-right place magic. Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore were at the peak of their careers, Shakti Samanta was going through his most creatively fecund phase, lyricist Anand Bakshi was spurred by his success to outdo himself, and R D Burman, it seemed, could strike no wrong chords at all.

The treatment of Amar Prem's story and characters may not be entirely grounded in reality (Sharmila's religious, courteous and compassionate courtesan is a far cry from the beedi-smoking, venom-spewing prostitute she played in Mausam), but the film's...

Heroes for our times

VIJAY NAIR

Emblematic of our collective longings, each superstar of Bollywood is a window to the hopes and angst of his times…

....The 1970s held no such confusion. Not just the country but the entire world had retreated into a hippie-induced haze. Rajesh Khanna may not have been a part of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna”, but with his crinkling eyes and dancing hands, his body language communicated intoxication and the nation got high singing “Jai Jai Shiv Shankar”. The sub-text of his drawl in “Amar Prem”, ‘Pushpa, I hate tears' was denial. Something that the society outside was mirroring. His throne of romance was usurped when a tall, lanky young man decided enough was enough and he was no longer going to tolerate the injustice meted out to him by the discriminating world he encountered......

.......What was her association with the superstar like?

"Just because you do a lot of films together, and vibe well, that doesn’t mean you are having an affair," exclaims Mumtaz. "I am sure Juhi and Shah Rukh have nothing to do with each other but there are rumours of an involvement, which I don’t think are true. Similarly, my friendship with Rajesh Khanna was also misunderstood. He was my neighbour and we got along very well. I would pull his leg and tease him about his fan following. Whenever Rajesh entered a hotel in Madras, there was a queue of...

Frank Capra's immortal observation: tragedy is not when the actor cries; tragedy is when the audience cries, perfectly fits Anand. It is a film that keeps its protagonists dry-eyed but makes the stoniest blink with emotion.

In 1970, the year of Anand, another film about a bravely dying protagonist Love Story (Ryan O'Neal, Ali McGraw), stormed the world. Perhaps it was just cosmically ordained that at that time the world would be in the mood for a collective, cathartic cry.

Hrishikesh Mukherjee's Anand, of course, famously laced the tears with laughter. Anand is memorable...

Dev Anand was my inspiration: Rajesh Khanna

Hindustan Times
New Delhi, December 09, 2011

The 50s was the era of black and white classics, and the ruling stars included Dilip Kumar, the thespian, Raj Kapoor, the serio comedian and Dev Anand, the eternal romantic. Each had his own distinct style and fan following. I was an ardent admirer of Dev Anand from my teens.

I clearly remember watching and loving him in Funtoosh, Baarish, Kala Pani and Love Marriage. He had the best looks and smile of his era and his puff was legion.

There was no better romantic actor than him. With his unique style and fluidity,...

Unlike Akshay Kumar, his father-in-law left an indelible impression as an Air Force officer in the 1969 Shakti Samanta movie.

If in Andaaz, Kumar Sanu-voiced numbers became an emblem of mediocrity in music, Aradhana's Mere Sapno Ki Rani turned out to be a signature Rajesh Khanna tune of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

In a famous double role, Khanna flies high. Literally. Couldn't he have given a tip or two to his rather handsome son-in-law?

“Like a wannabe I started clicking pictures of Mr Amitabh Bachchan giving Rajesh Khanna an award!”

He has built his brand brick by brick. The incredible success story of Madhur Bhandarkar goes retro – like his hero Ajay Devgn’s latest hit

“The first time I made some money on my own was when I made `50 delivering a video cassette,” recalls Madhur who has never hidden his humble beginnings. “I got it for a film called Ek Baar Phir by Vinod Pande, starring Suresh Oberoi and Deepti Naval, in which there was the song ‘Man kahe main jhoomoon’....

Remembering the time when he was a newcomer while Rajesh Khanna was a phenomenon, Amitabh Bachchan once said: 'I got famous purely because I was working with Rajesh Khanna in Anand. People asked me questions like, 'How is he to look at? What does he do?' '

It is certainly magnanimous of one superstar to speak in such glowing terms of another who was once his chief adversary at the box-office. While there is no denying the apparent modesty peeking through Bachchan's praise, he is not far from the mark in encapsulating the Khanna phenomenon.

The sheer fan following Rajesh...

When there can be a Forbes’ list with the most beautiful women of the century; why, I ask, can’t there be the same for men? We girls, after all, need our eye-candy too. From the top of my head, I can think of heartthrobs like Rajesh Khanna, Robert Redford, Jeff Bridges and Rahul Khanna (top image) who have tugged at my heartstrings through the years.
