~EarthClan camp~
Pinekit rustled her way out of the EarthClan nursery and stared around the camp with wide eyes. "My territory!" she squeaked, and leapt at the first thing she saw. A warrior, Lionfur, was passing by. With a twitch of her butt, Pinekit leapt onto the unsuspecting warrior and bit into his tail.
Yelping in pain, the warrior flicked her away and glowered at her. "Is that any way to treat a warrior?" he asked her sternly.
Laughing, Pinekit responded, "Nope!" His eyes lightened as he watched her laugh.
"You run along, now," he said, and he padded away. Giggling, Pinekit leapt onto a leaf that had fluttered down. I'm gonna be just like him! she decided right then and there. Whether he wants me to or not.
Beigekit's bright eyes appeared in the entrance to the nursery. "Pinekit!" he hissed, poking his head out. "What are you doing out there?"
"Come on, Beigekit!" she wailed. "Come out and play!"
The stark brown tom shook his broad head. "No," he said. "It's dangerous."
That's just like Beigekit, thought Pinekit. Not wanting to come out of the nursery and into the safety of his own camp. What kinda warrior is he going to be?
"Come on, Beigekit! It's not like BlazeClan is going to barge into camp and invade."
As though on cue, the gorse barrier was shoved aside and a patrol of warriors came in, carrying a cat on their shoulders.
"Oh no!" gasped Pinekit, and Spottedsong rushed out and shoved her backwards, toward the nursery.
"No!" cried several cats. "Sparrowtail!" Stonespirit, growling, leapt onto the tallrock.
"Where'd you find her?"
Goldenpool, a senior warrior stepped forward. "The BlazeClan border, up by the Flat Rock."
Growling, Stonespirit let out a snarl. "Brightstar!"
"Ever since Pinestar died, she feels she can do whatever she wants." Cried Lionfur, and Pinekit fluffed up her fur in indignation. He was right, wasn't he? She had never met Brightstar, but she didn't sound pretty at all.
"Yeah!" agreed Snaketooth, circling the camp. "But Pinestar's death wasn't the only one. Remember what what said at the border: Volewhisker died recently."
"And Mistyflower was attacked," added Crowtail, the eldest warrior.
"That's no excuse!" hissed Stonespirit. "Brightstar has killed my deputy, and in doing so, challenged all of EarthClan! We will not allow those, those...crowfood-eaters to take the lives of innocent cats!"
"Yeah!" cried the warriors in agreement. Spottedsong, flicking her tail protectively over her kits, asked,
"Are you going to say something at the Gathering?"
Stonespirit shook his head wildly. "This calls for action. And how will we react? For every life they take of ours, we will take one of theirs."
"You mean?" asked several warriors, not daring to say it.
"That's right," hissed Stonespirit. "We're going to take a cat's life."
All the warriors stared at one another. Grasstail--the deputy--stepped forward. "Are you sure this is the right thing to do, Stonespirit?" The leader nodded furtively.
"We're going to take a life of BlazeClan they won't forget. Go to them, and take a cat. I seek out Dawnstripe. Bring her here, and we will rip open ShiningStars for her!"
There were a couple of cheers, but a lot of halfhearted murmurs. The warriors, though, dipped their heads and took off on their journey to retrieve Dawnstripe.
...
When the warriors who had left returned with the struggling black and gray she-cat. They had weakened her by fighting her and had tossed her down some rocks that infested the EarthClan territory with their beauty.
They dumped the gray and black she-cat onto the ground and stood back, letting her pant. She looked up as Stonespirit appeared, silhouetted against the moonlight as he sat next to the ever-resting Sparrowtail.
"Stonespirit!" she hissed. "How dare you steal me from my own camp."
"That's right, you foolish, puny forest-cat. Look at me. Look into the face of your murderer."
"Murderer!" hissed Dawnstripe, but that was all she could say. The leader stepped forward and hit her hard across the head, knocking the breath out of her.
"You killed my warrior," he bellowed. "Deathberries!" he hissed. "They're dangerous."
"Deathberries," murmured Dawnstripe. Then she looked up. "Nonono! Stonespirit! We have been poisoned too! It's not just--"
"Silence!" he shouted suddenly, and Pinekit flinched at his words, cowering in the nursery as her leader stood up. "You have killed your Clan, foolish she-cat. You have killed it by telling me this. Spare your life, crowfood! You. Will. Die!"
And with those words, he scooped her up by her scruff and carted her away, the tomcats cat-calling and following with drooling tongues. The she-cat stared around in shock. What was going on?
Pinekit flicked her tail in fear and indignation as Lionfur followed Stonespirit and the she-cat.
Her screaming went on for a long period of the night.
They returned, carrying her. She was struggling, and wailing, and despite the impossible crying. "Mommy," she murmured. "What did they do?"
Spottedsong dragged her daughter closer. "Nothing, my sweetkit. Just you hope you're never in her position."
Pinekit was about to ask why she should worry if they had done nothing when Stonespirit swept his tail around, signalling for the other warriors to back away and give them space.
"Stand, you mouse," he hissed. "Stand and fight." The she-cat shakily rose to her feet. And the fight began. It was short, and it ended with an abrupt yelp from the BlazeClan she-cat.
And the EarthClan cats called into the night. "It's not over," cried Stonespirit. "Snaketooth, take this mutant cat back to the BlazeClan border, and leave her there."
The orange tom, with dripping teeth, grabbed her by her scruff and dragged her through the mud and back out of the camp.
Stonespirit looked around the heated Clan. "BlazeClan will never challenge us again," he declared, and flicked his tail comfortingly.
Shivering, Pinekit curled against her mother and tried to sleep.
...
Volewhisker brushed her way into the EarthClan nursery, with Dawnstripe right behind her.
"I hate this place," muttered the shaky new shining star. "I will always hate this place."
Volewhisker comfortingly placed her tail on the warrior's shoulder. "I know, but we must do this."
"Why couldn't Tawnynose, or Heartfall do it? They're from EarthClan."
"Because these kits don't know them. Meeting me will be enough of a shock."
"They don't know me either!" protested Dawnstripe in an icy panic.
"No, but they're familiar with you, and they'll know and understand that we are of ShiningStars, and we aren't here to harm them."
"No, they'll see me and they'll believe I'm back for revenge," she said bitterly.
"No Clan cat would take the life of an innocent kit."
"No, but innocent warriors are fair game."
Groaning, she turned away from the warrior. "Dawnstripe, it is your duty to protect them."
"EarthClan?!"
"BlazeClan," she said impatiently, then turned around and nudged the kitten on the ear. "Pinekit," she murmured..."
...
Pinekit heard her name being called from her nightmares. "No!" she wailed, then turned around. She was in the EarthClan nursery, once a comfort, now a dead zone.
"Pinekit," said a cat she had never seen before. It was a dark gray she-cat, with a long tail and whiskers. She smelled of stars, and forests, and reminded Pinekit somewhat of the cat Stonespirit had taken.
"You may want to be careful where your thoughts lead," said the she-cat, moving aside to reveal the very star of Pinekit's nightmares. "We are not alone."
"Who are you?" asked Pinekit in a nervous chill. She had never seen these cats before.
"I am Volewhisker, of ShiningStars." Pinekit remember hearing of Volewhisker earlier today.
"Volewhisker," she murmured to herself. The gray and black warrior from earlier stepped forward.
"I am Dawnstripe, of ShiningStars," she said. "And my little one, we do not blame you for what your Clan has done."
"But as you must watch your thoughts, watch your pawsteps, for you must always be careful."
"Carelessness leads to trouble." Pinekit's eyes widened. What did they mean?
...
Spottedsong sat uncomfortably, not know that her daughter was seeing the same forest. "Where am I?" she asked out loud, although no one was there to answer, or so she thought.
"You are in the hunting grounds of BlazeClan," said a voice, and she spun around to see Tawnynose, the old EarthClan medicine cat. Beside him was Falconleaf, the medicine cat before Honeytail in BlazeClan.
Bristling her fur, Spottedsong said, "Why am I here?"
Falconleaf says, "We wish to welcome you, and warn you. You must seek a new home until Grasstail can take over as the leader of EarthClan."
"Why would I do that?" she asked quietly. But she already knew the answer.
"The safety of your kits is at stake, my dear," said Tawnynose. "And safety lies in a Clan of safety.
"But BlazeClan just isn't that," she hissed. "I saw what happened today! And I know that there is trouble going on between AirClan, BlazeClan, and EarthClan. That's it!" she leapt up.
"I'm going to leave, all right. And I'm taking my kits to where they are safest."
..
Pinekit awoke to her mother brushing fur. "My sweet kits, awaken. We are leaving."
"Whu--?"
"Get up. Now," ordered Spottedsong. The kits rose shakily to their feet and padded out of the EarthClan nursery, and out of the EarthClan camp.
...
Soon, they had reached the StreamClan border. "Not much further," her mother hissed, and she stopped. "Wait here," she ordered, then raced through the trees, up past the Flat Rock, and up a large slope into BlazeClan territory. A few moments later, she returned, with a large dark gray tom following her.
"What are you doing, waking me up like that?" he asked stubbornly. "What if Penny had seen you?"
"Penny didn't see me, and I need you to do me a favour."
The gray tom glared at her, with hard amber eyes. "What?"
"Watch my kits until they are old enough to return."
Gasping, the gray tom glared at the two kits. Then his amber eyes lightened as they met Pinekit's. "You want me to what?"
"Watch them, please," said Spottedsong. Their's been trouble, and...and...I can't afford to loose them."
"What?" asked Pinekit blankly. "Spottedsong, who is this?"
"This is a kittypet named Smokey," said the EarthClan queen. "He lives with another kittypet named Shadow, in a white house in BlazeClan territory, with a twoleg named Penny."
"You want us to be kittypets?" asked Pinekit furiously. How could her mother expect her to give up on becoming a warrior this easy.
Her mother's eyes were sad. "I'm sorry, but it's the only way--"
"Only way for you!" cried Pinekit. "What about us?" She looked at Beigekit for support, but her brown counterpart was sniffing curiously at Smokey's feet. Wasn't he even a little miffed that this was what was expected of him.
No, she thought. It's not. This is just like Beigekit, not wanting out of the nursery... Fury rose in Pinekit's mouth. It tasted like bile.
Bristling, she'd make them pay. She'd make them all pay.
"Never!" she hissed. "I'm never gonna be a kittypet!" And she raced away into the trees, running from the fate her mother expected of her.
"Don't run that way, Pinekit!" her mother wailed in fear. "That's StreamClan territory!" But Pinekit didn't listen, she ran, until her paws were wet with water--water?
She then realized she had run straight into a river!
Snarling as water splashed over her and the current picked up, Pinekit tumbled down into the water until she wasn't sure which was was up.
I'll never see Spottedsong again, She thought.
"Keep moving," whispered a familiar voice. Volewhisker! she screamed in her conciousness. "Keep moving..."
She wasn't sure how much time passed, but she was suddenly moving. She saw large paws kick wildly and then felt teeth in her scruff. The ground suddenly popped out at her and she was dragged onto the shore. Although she could hear them just fine, Pinekit couldn't find the strength to respond.
"Who is it, Frostbreeze?" asked a deep, thunderous voice.
"I don't know, Berryfur," said a she-cat's voice. "It doesn't have a scent."
It! It! How dare they call me an it! In her moment of fiery anger, Pinekit found the strength to cough.
There was a stony silence, then, "She's alive!"
She felt a paw prod her gently. "What should we do?" asked Frostbreeze.
"Moonshadow will know what to do," said the tom--Berryfur.
"yes, but what are we going to say, huh? I found a kit in the forest. Let's get it nice and clean just to get rid of it?"
Fear shot through Pinekit. Had she made a big mistake?
"I know, Frostbreeze." More silence. "I know you lost your kits today."
Almost bitterly: "Yeah, I know that too."
"How many cats know?"
"Just Moonshadow."
"Well, then..."
Silence.
"Are you suggesting...that I...?"
"It's the best story we've got. You have one kit. Only we would know."
"And Moonshadow."
"And Moonshadow," he added.
Softly: "We don't even know where she's from. She doesn't have a name, or anything."
"Name her," said the tom. "Take her back, to Moonshadow. We'll say you kitted in the forest."
"But this kit isn't newly born..."
"Yeah, but she's only a few days old, and small. We can make this work."
There was silence again. I hate silence. "Fine," said Frostbreeze. "We'll take her to Moonshadow and say that she's mine, but we'll have to have a story for Watersoul."
Berryfur's voice was infinitely relieved. "Moonshadow will understand, and help us. You'll make a great mother, Frostbreeze, and Shortwhisker a great father. She'll be a great addition to StreamClan, you'll see."
And they scooped her up. As they did so, she began to black out. I hope they don't kill me! But as her memory began to fade, the last thing she heard was,
"We'll name her Creekkit, for her appearance in the creeklet river."
