I know that most people don’t like Snow White, they either don’t like the princess or the movie or even both. I’m not going to try to change anyone’s opinion about this movie but I am going to try and point out what makes this movie important and hopefully I may persuade a few to change their minds.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was Disney’s first movie was premiered December 21, 1937. It was a huge hit and quickly Disney became known around the U.S.A. by its widespread release in 1938 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs earned four times more money than any other movie released that same year and by May 1939 its total international gross was $6.5 million.

Snow White’s origin is a German Fairytale by the Brothers Grimm (Original German Title: Schneewittchen und die sieben Zwerge). In Disney’s adaption he ended up changing some of the original details:
•    There is no opening with Snow White’s mother pricking her finger and saying she wished she had a daughter with lips as red as blood, skin white as snow and hair black as ebony.
•    There is no remarriage of the king to her stepmother.
•    In the story the stepmother visits the cottage three times: the first time she gives her a corset and ties it so tight she cannot breathe but the dwarfs cut it off, the second time it is a poisoned comb in her hair and she’s revived when the dwarfs take it out, the third time it’s the apple.
•    The prince falls in love with her in the coffin and has the dwarfs carry it to his castle on the way there a dwarf stumbles dislodging the apple piece and reviving her.
•    The queen asks her mirror who’s fairest and he replies it’s the prince’s new bride. Not knowing that it’s Snow White she goes to the wedding where she’s ordered to dance in iron hot shoes until she drops dead.

It is common knowledge that most people (my sister included) don’t like Snow White because of her voice. Adriana Caselotti was only 18 years old and paid $970 for the entire thing. She was of Italian descent and had exceptional training in opera singing, she wanted to make it big in Hollywood as an Opera singer when she became Snow White. After the success of the movie it was revealed that the contract she’d signed made it impossible for her ever to peruse her singing career because Disney didn’t want the image of Snow White ruined when people saw her doing other things, but she never regretted it: link. Adriana Caselotti died in 1997, she was 80 years old.

The most memorable part of any Disney movie has to be the music in Snow White there is quite a lot of music, out of the 25 songs made for the movie only 8 made it into the movie including:
1.    I’m Wishing
2.    One Song
3.    With a Smile and a Song
4.    Whistle While You Work
5.    Heigh – Ho
6.    Bluddle – Uddle – Um – Dum (Dwarf’s Washing Song)
7.    The Dwarf’s Yodel Song (Silly Song)
8.    Someday My Prince Will Come
Two songs that almost made the cut include Music in Your Soup and You’re Never too Old to Be Young, both of which can be found on the 2001 soundtrack reissue. Out of all of the songs the Silly Song has the most interesting story, some cities banned the movie because of Sneezy’s ‘inappropriate’ lines:

SNEEZY:
The minute after I was born
I didn’t have a nighty
So I tied my whiskers round my legs
And they used ‘em for a didee… [sneezes]

so the song was changed to exclude it you can listen to Sneezy sing them here link (Thanks to Swanpride for the link on one of her questions).

All in all Snow White was a milestone in movie history without Disney’s perseverance and the success of Snow White and Adriana Caselotti there wouldn’t be any of the movies we know today no Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin or Tangled, and that’s why Snow White is one of my favorite Princesses: because she was the first to pave the way.
