tiagih I personally like groups of anything to have some kind of cohesion in them. If she were to join the group for me she would need to sing at least twice (one with herself and hopefully one with her future lover) she needs to have a animal companion and she needs to have a love interest. Everything else is gravy but those are the things that make the disney princesses consistent. If she doesn't have that I would think she is forced to join the group (kind alike Mulan and Pocahontas were). This whole notion that the future Disney princess have to be these pro feminist or tomboys is not what is important in a disney movie esp a DP. If Disney wants males ( that aren't fans of DP)to watch DP movies then they have to let off on this whole power woman crap and focus on making a movie that everyone can like best example is BATB every male and female likes that movie not just because Belle is smart and the Beast is strong but because its a good movie. If this is another PATF movie I will be severely disappointed but hey its Pixar so who knows

Swanpride Even if Merida looked like she would fit in with the other princesses, I wouldn't want her in the group. Disney and Pixar, though interconnected, are still two different company, and they should stay as seperated as possible. They both have their own style, and I like what they do. But I don't like it when they try to do what the other one does. They are both at their best when they do their own thing.

Pink_Love ^I dont undrestand how people can say "I dont like Merida" when we have not even seen her movie yet. That is just dumb. Anyways, I would not mind if she joined because she looks awesome so far but they could keep her seperate and just let her be hopefully awesome on her own. Either way I would not mind. I am excited to see the movie. I really hope I like her.

SweetPea2007 I personally like what I have seen of Merida so far. She is a strong willed, spunky, girl who is going after her own destiny and does not NEED a man. I like a heroine that is not a damsel in distress (that is why I like Mulan, Tiana, and Rapunzel)and it is nice to see a movie without all the singing too. It would be cool to see her in the lineup, but I am going to like her whether or not she is in it.

magicfairydust I do not think she should be in the Disney princess lineup. Well then again we'll have to wait until her movie comes out. She just doesn't mesh. A disney princess has to have a love interest, and she has to sing. I just can't imagine her standing next to the disney princesses. I think she'll be great because she seems spunky, determined and is a feminist friendly princess, but tbh i wanna see a more traditional princess because of all the girl power princesses there have been lately, not that I don't like it, I just want to see something a little more different.

pulgaenana We also have to look at the fandom. By example it will be difficult to organize de photosets by beign 11, also when we do lists of favorite princes, love stories, etc... it will be weird to have to take one princess out. As for now, I don't think she will be add. Disney has allready refuse to add others like Kida (just the fact she turns in to a queen and doesn't sing) Kiara and Melody (being sequels and Kiara being a animal) So, Disney is very strict about who it let's in into the Line-up. Rapunzel had to wait almost a year to be named a princess. So with Mer I see this even more difficult. The only reason I see why they want to add her is because she's scotish, and have characters from all nationalities proves to be one of Disney's principal motors about franchises and merchandising (Mulan is an example of this)

pulgaenana Well this isn't a post about if you like or not like Mer. I personally LOVE her. And I think I'm more excited for her movie than I was with The Hunger Games (IMAGINE THAT!). But I wouldn't mind she is in or not in the line up. I'm really neutral in that spot, I'd like both ways.

milky-way I agree with Persephone about the pro-feminism thing. I get a bit annoyed when I see comments on the internet saying things like "Finally! A girl who doesn't need a man and can look after herself!" Obviously they don't remember any Disney movies from the 90's, Mulan clearly doesn't need a man to look after her, Jasmine was feisty and stood up for herself, and Pocahontas saved John Smith and sacrificed her relationship for more important things. Merida isn't the first.

faya27 I agree with Peresphone, justgrac, and milky-way. I like to see a princess that is girly and strong. Just because a girl is girly doesn't mean she's weak. I'm girly myself and I want to see someone that is strong and girly. Rapunzel's the only princess that is girly and strong. I was also shunned badly by this tomboy when I was a young child. I tried to befriend her but she didn't like me because I was girly. I got over it but I'm still somewhat resentful toward tomboys because of that terrible experience.

And Ariel's hair is a unrealistic red red hair while Merida hear is a natural orange color. So what if she doesn't sing. There is music in the movie. Ariel only had one song in her movie yet she's suppose to be known for having this great voice. Belle didn't sing her theme song. So what. it's not Merida doesn't have a song at all. Those are not cons. Also so what if she's not wearing pink. Merida has another dress that is a light green one. Merida doesn't need a love interest. Her story is about her love for her mother. This is a great way to show that little girls don't have to out looking for a man to be happy. they have love right at home. Also Merida's tale is the Pixar trying to create their own original fairy tale. So it's still a fairy tale with witches and spirits.

Avaacullen I agree with Princess Tiana. And what's with the 'her look is dark'? Have you seen the dresses Merida's dolls are being sold with? A pastel blue one that definitely 'blends' with the dresses of all the Disney princesses. To be honest, next to Belle, Merida is my favorite. Her character would add a fresh air to the whole princesses line, not to mention it would send a good message to the crowd of little Disney girls: you don't have to wait to be 'saved' by a freaking prince.

josephlpierce3 I have been a huge Disney - Pixar fan since I was a little kid when John Lasseter made The Brave Little Toaster and got fired from Disney because of it. Then Toy Story came out and changed the world (and no that is not an exaggeration as anyone from my field will know). I have seen them on the precipice of falling into the abbiss and then rescued by, Steve Jobs. I have so much respect for that man. He saw the brilliance of John Lasseter’s vision and gave millions upon millions of dollars year after year with out getting anything back. He believed that they could make their dreams come true and in turn do the same for us. I have been in this field for years and we learn very quick to support those that support us back. Steve Jobs with his connections with Apple supported Pixar during their most tough time and even though Apple is at its hight of economic profit I still support them because the basic principles that hold up our profession live in them. Mark Andrews, Steve Purcell, Brenda Chapman all spear headed by John Lasseter have given us another great step in a already star spangled history of characters. This time they gave us a princess, the Princess of Dunbrough, Merida. Many have asked wether she should be added to the list of Disney princesses. I say no because she is not Disney, she is a member of the Pixar family. Let this be another stepping stone for this great company to build upon instead of just adding another name to a list. Merida is Pixar’s first princess and like so many other things that they do she also has turned on our hearts. Fiery and independent, she goes through heartache, heartbreak, struggles and in the end she finds her true place; with her family. Disney and Pixar have had their struggles but ever since the begging when John Lasseter realized that you could make a living by creating cartoons he dreamed of being a part of Disney’s family in his own way. He was brave. Family is important and Pixar has just added an amazing young lass to their family of characters. Give them someone to fight for just like Steve Jobs saw something worth fighting for in Pixar. Give them their, Princess.

blueyedcutie18 Correction: she did have a love interest in the original ending until the new one was written. I don't think Ariel matters and she does have a pastel blue dress to blend in. As for the singing she did sing that song with her mom in a flashback. Im fighting this, I want Merida to be a princess!

Purrsephone1996 I seriously don't think she should be, for one I have seen her film and it was terrible especially for Pixar! If it was trying to be Disney it was dreadful and if it was trying to be different is was dreadful! The plot, character development, character design and movie as a whole sucked! Though the setting was beautiful I don't see the point in her being there at all! It was very cliché ecspecially for nowadays and had dreadful humour throughout.. it was also very lazy towards the end of the film. Merida as well is the typical boring princess 'who dosen't need a man' and whilst trying to make her seem perfect with her being able to fight her own battle and not having her prince to me makes her character very bland.. she like archery and not being a girl.. that's it? Her design I have to admit is very ugly! I like the hair because when I was younger I always wanted there to be someone who was pretty to have curly hair and now that they make one.. they just make her look hideous! I don't think she's a good role model to me she seemed selfish.. yeah she saw her errors but we all knew it was going to happen in the end? With Snow white, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty people complain about them being damsels in distress and teaching girls they need to be rescued but all they taught me was to be kind and caring, not to be mean and judge people for what they look like and with chores like cleaning turned them into a game of me being one of them to make it more fun! With Ariel she showed an interest in a world which she wanted to be a part of and had adventures and just enjoyed life.. when people say she was selfish for ditching her family.. she was upset because her father had destroyed her collection she had made since she was young and heartbroken that Sebastian had 'betrayed' her. She had wanted to be a part of that world for a long time not just because or Eric that was her final push.. she had a mind of her own to and at least her character was fun, Belle is intelligent and still has a fun personality she is also kind and has a mind of her own, Jasmine had a mind of her own, Pocahontas, Mulan (Who is apparently the 'tomboy' is probably the best role model of the bunch), Tiana, Rapunzel all have minds of their own? They are all someone who you could relate to and were all very pretty:) Merida is Pixar and I don't like the idea of her being in the DISNEY Princess line up, she isn't very traditional either with having her prince, musical and being based from a fairytale book or folk lore. I'm embaressed by how much I've wrote so I'll stop there:L

skyqueen17 Well, she is going to be one soon, come this June, and I think it will be a good change for Disney. Merida is the first one who doesn't have a love interest and to have unruly locks. She's a much better role model than several of the the princesses. My little sister, who will be turning seven soon, loves Merida, even tough she hasn't even seen the film yet. She has the doll, and I always hear her playing with the other dolls,from Ariel to Tiana and Merida. I think this is a great turn for both Disney and Pixar, and besides, Rapunzel is computer generated as well and I don't think she looks all that similar to the other princesses.

Its LOVE. way more important. Feminists need to get a grip and stop making this seem like a battle of what gender is best. AND NO Merida is NOT the first pro-female. She acts very rude anyway. Thats not a role-model. The movie wasnt that big a hit FYI. Its the lowest grossing PIXAR after Cars 2.
