Why I hate Pocahontas: The Opinion of TheFabulousFAN

I get most people hate Pocahontas for its historical inaccuracy, and so do I. It just doesn't seem right to me to have John Smith (who was a Pervert, Betrayer, and Conquerer) as a disney prince and looked at in such a angelic light. Since most people's agreement is "it's just a movie." And "it's not Disney's job to make teach history." I'm not asking for a historically accurate film that would be terrible for children. I'm stating it was a mistake to be made a BASED of real history story..it could have just been a random Native American but no they chose Pocahontas and they twisted and bent the story. I personally refuse to even look at a John Smith character in a heroic light because of the real John Smith actions, But staying on topic. Since most people say 'it's just a movie' then fine it's just a movie as long as people know its fake and not even close to reality. Then I guess that means I can make a movie about Adolf Hitler as a Disney prince...right? I mean it's just going to be a movie. And I'm going to make it so Adolf falls in love with a Jewish Girl and they both stop Nazism because they love each other...and I'll make products of Adolf Hitler Dolls and he can be most handsome on DP list and who knows he could even be your favorite Disney prince ..right? I mean who cares it's just a movie ...people will look at Adolf as Heroic too...but of coarse just the character in the film not the real Adolf. I can't wait to see that movie... Adolf Hitler dolls will be flying of the shelves. Girls will love Adolf Hitler and The Jewish girl will be there favorite princess. It the lies about Pocahontas that makes me hate it ...and it's not the name John Smith it's the fact the associate it with REAL history and people like John Smith and Pocahontas as a couple when in reality he was TERRIBLE to Pocahontas. Just like Adolf hitler ...he was terrible to Jews ...so having a Jew as his love interest and Glorifying him as a hero is BAD. But like most people say "it's just a movie, People like the character not the actual person." I hear that so much too. You can't have someone that was responsible for destroying an ENTIRE RACE be praised and then fall in love with some one else of the RACE THEY TRIED TO DESTROY! But hey, it's just a movie so my Adolf Hitler movie can be made too ^_^ and he will fall in love with a Jewish girl.

banjoth I'm sorry but I disagree, like you said there are statement like, the original wouldn't at all be for children. I love it, I don't care if it's inaccurate. That has nothing to do with me.

TigerRanma In the Disney version, do they ever hint that John Smith has killed Native Americans? I think they do somewhere, no? I can't remember. But it's like, after meeting Pocahontas, he suddenly wants to understand them and leave them alone. But doesn't he already have blood on his hands from his previous adventures?

zikkiforever @TigerRanma yeah they did sort of hint he killed them before. He was with Radcliffe and what Radcliffe was doing would suggest John was killing them. I thought that anyway, if he was with Radcliffe and he was killing them he must too. Nice article, though little kids don't know about the history. A bet half them don't know about Pocahontas being real. It is good disney movie I think, inaccurate or not it doesn't take away the magic. People never like John or Poca due to the history, BUT that is not there fault. I think the movie and characters are underrated. Though, I wouldn't mind the Hitler movie

324anna I honestly didn't know that John Smith was so bad in real life. I knew that Pocahontas was historically inaccurate but I had no idea about him. If it's true, then I understand why you don't like the concept of the film. But I wish you had included more things about the movie, you concentrated only on the fact that it's historically inaccurate.

TigerRanma Yeah, when I saw Pocahontas in theaters, I was 6 years old. I hadn't learned about the real Pocahontas. Actually I hadn't learned about History yet. It wasn't until I was over 8 years old that I read a book about the real Pocahontas. It was just a small children's book that didn't give a lot of information. Only Pocahontas's real name, that she saved John Smith, and that she married John Rolfe. Then Pocahontas 2 came out when I was 9 and I saw that she got with John Rolfe. But I didn't know how bad the English settlers were to the Native Americans until I was maybe 9 or 10 in History class.

jmvdwaal dude comparing adolf hitler to john smith is rediculous. just think about it. before this movie barely anyone knew john smith but everyone knows hitler. and making a movie about hitler would get lots of hate. you cant compare someone that killed 6 mil jews 70 years ago ( still fresh in memory) to someone that killed indians 00 years ago. just look at americans. many americans have great great great grandparents that killed indians. no one is complaining about that.
