The Novel that started it all!
The Novel that started it all!
Hi everyone, this will be my first article since my last one on a non-Disney film. So, this article on the Hunchback of Notre Dame and how similar the film with the original novel by Victor Hugo.

The Novel

In the original novel, the story is quite dark and depressing, it has a LOT of flashbacks resulting in the reader to be confuse along the way. It was discovered at the end of the original novel that Gudule is the biological mother of Esmeralda and the latter's name is Agnes.
Quasimodo has learning disabilities which causes frustrations with Frollo, his master. The latter adopted the former at the cathedral after no one wants to adopt the poor baby!
Speaking of Frollo, he has a younger idle brother name Jehan who was killed at the end of the novel by Quasimodo during the battle at Notre Dame.
Sadly, the ending is a sad ending where Quasimodo kills Frollo and says, "All that I had love!", it was the last time that everybody sees the Hunchback, and his skeleton was discovered alongside Esmeralda which his skeleton was turned to dust.
His relationship with Esmeralda is cordial and it was discovered that he was left by the Gypsies and Esmeralda was abducted!
Phoebus was no saint to Esmeralda at the end, because he thought that she attempts to kill him and he is engage to Fleur-De-Lis, his marriage is miserable to say the least!
Finally, Pierre Gringoire is save by Esmeralda by marrying him after he discovers the Court of Miracles. Unfortunately, their personalities are different and during the ending, he saves her pet goat name Djali.

The Film

So, the film is partially different from the original novel as the filmmakers want to make it into a friendly family movie. There are also several differences with the film in a contrast with the novel.
First, Esmeralda survives and Phoebus does not have a fiance but marries the former in the end with Quasimodo giving the couple his blessings in the end.
Frollo has no brother and becomes pyromaniac by burning all of Paris down! He meets his death when his wish was granted.
Finally, Quasimodo is accepted in society after the Parisians witness his good deeds after all!

Someday!

There you have it, the comparisons between the novel and the film, if I miss anything out, you may feel free to write it down in the comment section!
