This round goes once again to KataraLover. I don't think any of us are surprised that Anastasia and William took this round, considering how popular the story A Twist In Time seems to be. But without further delay, here is the interview of round five's winner.
Well, this is your third win for the contest. How does it feel?
It feels amazing as always to win a round in this contest. I must say that after the last contest where I had three couples for the judges to choose from and two of them got nominated but still lost to the one that DOMINATED that contest, it feels really amazing to actually win this round!
You've mentioned before that, that for a long time, you've really liked Anastasia and William (the Baker) as couple. Why is that?
Well, I find them to be really unique, especially for a Disney couple. If they were in another Disney movie where Anastasia was the protagonist they’d both be made to be conventionally good looking. While I do hate that in almost all of the adaptations of Cinderella the step-sisters and step-mother are made to be unattractive just to make Cinderella look good, it really works to this couples advantage. While I’ve said before that I think Anastasia is beautiful in an unconventionally (more so after her make-over in the second movie), she’s not what most would call a beauty. William (The Baker) is different from most animated heroes, look-wise, since we actually see even less of him than we did Charming. He’s fat, he has a big and pointy nose, and has chubby cheeks. It’s refreshing for once to actually see two animated characters get together that don’t look like supermodels.
Plus I love how they first see each other and fall in love, which you do see a lot of in Disney and animated movies, but this time it’s clear as day that NO ONE can complain that they fell for each other because of their looks. William (I’m just gonna call him that during this interview instead of The Baker) must see A LOT of women every day coming to his shop to buy is food and it’s likely that most of them were more beautiful than Anastasia. It shows love at first sight (in movies, at least) is more than just about looks but about having an instant connection with someone and seeing who they are inside. William treats her with genuine kindness when he doesn’t have to be nice to her and Anastasia wanted to become a better person and finally stand up to her mother. For what little we see of them in the second movie, they have such a strong and adorable chemistry. Plus when he fought a goat to save her flowers and only saves one but still gives it to her when she thought he didn’t love her. That’s just so sweet! They’re absolutely PRECIOUS! They made me use the work precious, that’s how cute they are together!
What do you think makes them unique and stand out among the other couples in the contest?
Well, without counting Helga and Hans (who in the entry in this contest is a already reformed in the last entry) it’s the only one that involves a normal guy and a reformed villainess. Aside from Found Again, which was a romance, this story has plenty of time to develop their relationship. They meet with love at first sight, they have a connection, they talk to each other about themselves and learn about each other, she’s conflicted about everything, he helps her learn to dance, and it’s just so much genuine love in something so complex. Besides Found Again, the other entries focused less on the romance and more on different relationships like Scrooge and Minnie. Plus, it’s also between two characters that aren’t conventionally attractive and definitely breaks the traditional mold that Disney couples are usually known for.
You explained in the last interview your feelings about Anastasia. So, what do you like the most about your version of William? (why?)
I love how even when Anastasia reveals her true form to him that it doesn’t make him love her one bit less. It shows how sweet and genuine he is, which is the kind of man that Anastasia needed. He accepted her for who she is on the inside, no matter what she looked like.
What do you dislike the most (if anything) about him? (why?)
I guess what I like the least about him is that I didn’t get to develop him as much as I wanted. He has more of a character than he used to but not the best developed. Unfortunately, I couldn’t develop him because it would’ve made the story too complicated and it had to stay focused on Anastasia while still giving a fair amount to Cinderella.
If you had to choose, who do you feel is more dedicated to the other, Anastasia or William?
Both are definitely dedicated to each other, but I’d have to say William is more dedicated to her. She was having conflicting thoughts about if she should marry Henry (Charming) or be with William. William, despite knowing that this was the prince’s future wife, wanted to be with her no matter what, even if it meant being punished by the King. Plus he got turned into a toad to keep her from being turned into one. I’d say by the end of the movie they’re equally dedicated, but before that it’s William.
Be honest, who do you think is the better couple, Anastasia and William or Cinderella and Henry (Charming)? (why?)
Definitely Anastasia and William! While Cinderella and Henry were given the same amount of screen time they had in the original sequel, where their relationship was given a real chance to shine with a lot of chemistry, they’re not as developed as Anastasia and William. Plus, they’re just not as interesting because they are the typical Disney fairy-tale couple while Anastasia and William are the opposite of that. Both are great, though.
Was it hard to try to write and develop their relationship and chemistry, from the little they had in Cinderella 2: Dreams Come True?
Yes and no! They already had such a strong chemistry in Dreams Come True that it was pretty easy to expand upon that. However, I also wanted to give them more conversations and interactions with each other to develop it but also make it feel natural. Plus trying to come up with how Anastasia stays with Henry instead of going with William was hard to figure out without making her look bad. But then I thought of Once Upon A Time and how Regina’s mother, Cora murdered her daughter’s true love so she’s marry Snow White’s father and become queen. She justified her actions by saying she was “helping” her daughter and that love was weakness, much like I had Lady Tremaine. Although, Lady Tremaine didn’t kill William but rather the royal taste tester and framed William. Plus I took a lot from the relationship of Anastasia and Will Scarlet’s relationship in the spin-off Once Upon A Time In Wonderland. Yes, that’s also where I got William’s name. So overall, it was easy in some parts and hard in some parts.
What was the hardest thing to write about them? (if any)
Trying to think of a way where Anastasia is still going to marry Henry and not be with William without making her look so terrible.
What was the easiest thing to write about them? (if any)
The scene where William accepts her for who she is and doesn’t care what she looks like. That scene was the easiest thing to write about with this relationship.
If Anastasia and William became an official DP couple where would they rank on your favorites list?
Probably third or forth.
If they someday became as popular a couple as Belle & Beast or Ariel & Eric, how would that make you feel?
It would be absolutely amazing and maybe even revolutionary for Disney. They’d have a popular couple that didn’t fit the Disney mold and would give the people who weren’t traditionally good looking hope that they can find love and that it doesn’t have to be a super attractive person.
What's your favorite thing about Anastasia and William's relationship?
Their strong chemistry and that they accept each other for who they are while still being realistic.
What's your least favorite thing about their relationship?
Honestly, NOTHING!
You’re also a judge for the contest, so if you could’ve voted for yourself, would you? (be honest)
Honestly, people might hate me for this but kind of. I would be tempted because I didn’t feel like the other romances were as well done, which is because the romance in those entries wasn’t that big a part of their stories, except for Found Love but I didn’t like how Rolfe was made to be a villain just to have Pocahontas back with Smith. I’m likely not going to win any more rounds because of this answer lol. Well, it was nice while it lasted lol.
Do you think you deserved to win? (be honest)
Yes, but I think all of the couples in this contest were cute.
