After he left I remember thinking that this was it now. I was truly and madly in love with him and nothing could go wrong. I’d found him. He was everything I could ask for. He makes me happy and I know where I’ll be; right by his side. It was bliss though. He’d just left that night. I retreated to my bedroom, slipped into my pyjamas and turned out the light. I crawled into bed pulling out my mobile. He picked up after the first ring ‘Missing me already?’ I could hear him walking home with the wind in the background.
‘Maybe’ I closed my eyes and stretched.
‘Everything OK?’ He sounded worried but I didn’t feel worried. I was the opposite of worried.
‘Tell me a story.’ I whispered. He made things better.
‘What kind of story?’
‘One with a happy ending’ I smiled.
‘Shouldn’t there be something in the middle?’ He laughed. Low and sexy.
‘I like to read the end first.’ I waited. I knew he was there. I could hear the traffic.
‘Once upon a time there was a girl…’
‘Not a princess.’
‘No. Not a princess. She was too smart. She was tough too.’
‘Yeah?’
‘Yeah, tougher than anyone else I know. She was beautiful.’ I just laughed.
‘Did I mention how sexy she was?’ I laughed again and curled in closer.
‘Are you almost home?’
‘Yes, I can see it from here.’ I knew roughly where he was. Just one more road to across and he would be home. I could hear the wide whistling through the phone and the cars passing by. I just held the phone to my ear and listened to him breathing.
‘Aislinn? Are you there?’
‘Yes. Will you visit tomorrow?’ I couldn’t wait to see him again. For him to hold me.
‘I will come down---‘ Then I heard it. The scream, the break, the impact. Silence.
Gone.
I knew it. I knew what happened.
‘Dylan?’ I whimpered.
Nothing.
‘No… No Dylan. You can’t do this to me. No… Please’ tears were sliding down my face. I was shaking me head. ‘No. Dylan. Don’t… don’t leave me. You can’t. You promised.’ They were gushing over and down my cheeks. I stared at my phone through the moisture filling my eyes. I hit the end button and threw the mobile across my room. It smashed. That’s what my heart did. Smash. I threw the bed quilt over my head and buried my face into my pillow. I screamed into it as hard as I could. I screamed and screamed. My parents came running into the room and saw me screaming and thrashing around on the bed. I came up from my pillow only to curse at them and scream for them to go away. I cried and cried until my eyes ran dry. My cheeks were caked in salty trails from where the tears had streamed down. My hair was knotted and torn. I screamed into the pillow until my throat burned. I grabbed the edges of the quilt in my hands and pulled them apart. It ripped. Right down the middle. Like my heart.
He was never coming back. I'd have to live with that
