I am not a theater-goer. I'm a wait-for-DVD-er. (Seriously, I haven't been to a movie theater since 2012.) But I just booked a pair of Ghostbusters tickets for opening day, and that's just the first of what will probably be multiple viewings. Why am I willing to break my lazy hermit streak for Ghostbusters? Read on, or I'll have you slimed.
I love the cast.
I loved Kristen Wiig when she was on SNL. I currently love Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones on SNL. Melissa McCarthy is new to me, but she is also wonderful. This is a great group of hilarious actors, and I am more than happy to support them. I drop everything whenever a new interview or clip pops up, so I'm sure seeing them in character for an hour and a half on the big screen will be even better. =D
They have the tools, and they have the talent.
If you thought the special effects and equipment were cool 32 years ago, imagine how awesome they'll be now! Experts from link supplied props and scientific input, and the ghosts were played by real actors with CGI effects added in later. Sounds good to me!
People want this movie to fail.
A box office success would be a sweet, sweet victory to rub in the faces of all those mouth-breathing basement-dwellers who make it their mission to troll every piece of Ghostbusters 2016 content on the web. The first trailer was the most disliked trailer in the history of YouTube. Visiting the comments section of any Ghostbusters '16 content anywhere is usually a bad idea. (Thankfully, it's been mostly peaceful here.) I have never seen such vicious trolling in all my years of being a nerd on the internet, and showing those ass-hats that they did not win would be an absolute pleasure.
The choice is made, and the critics have spoken.
I'm not generally concerned with what critics have to say, but Ghostbusters has been getting great reviews. (Much to the link of aforementioned trolls.) No rating on the web can be trusted, because angry fanboys will continue to rate it low without seeing it just for trollsies. But it's received a lot of positive reviews from professional critics, so that's a good sign!
It's approved by the original Ghostbusters.
Okay, so this one doesn't matter all that much to me, but I'm sure it matters to someone. Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd say it's good. Would they lie to you?
There's something strange in the costume department.
The Ghostbusters are dressed for practicality, not for male viewers. It's about damn time. Think about the female-led action movies you've seen. Tiny shorts, mini skirts, latex body-suits, heels. Is that really what you really think women would grab out of the closet when there are zombies to fight or tombs to explore? Get real, movie industry.
Who you gonna call? Female role models!
Look at these kids looking at Kristen Wiig at the premiere. LOOK AT THEMMM.
It's about more than just Ghostbusters.
As of July 2016, the time of writing this, only 8 of the link worldwide box office hits were led by a female protagonist: 4 Hunger Games, 3 Disney, and 1 weightless Sandra Bullock. We make up 51% of the population, but star in 8% of the 100 biggest movies. WTF.
If Ghostbusters bombs, studios will be even more hesitant than they are now to get behind female-led films. There are more of us than there are of them, and we deserve to have a greater presence in the things we watch. Girls need to see real women doing cool things for themselves, not just animated princesses waiting for a prince or the one piece of eye candy in whatever the latest action franchise is.
Ghostbusters doesn't rely on skimpy costumes to keep men interested or the idea that romance is the only thing that women care about. It's about four people who come together and use their skills to protect their city, have a few laughs, and kick the unliving crap out of some ghosts. A box office success for Ghostbusters will prove that movie-goers want to see women treated like actual human beings instead of stereotypes or props. Again, it's about damn time.
I'm not afraid, not afraid to say this movie looks freakin' awesome.
I have laughed out loud at every Ghostbusters video so far. Trailers, international trailers, clips, featurettes, interviews with the actors. The cast is amazing, the story is a classic, the soundtrack is awesome, and I am counting down the hours until July 15!
