My plan worked. We're free!
You have no idea how nice it is to be free of that collar, free from the grazers, free from that cursed prison entirely. Freedom, Freedom, Freedom! Pretty sure that's my new favorite word.
Wow, I have a LOT to catch you up on.... I'll just take it one part at a time.
This morning, I got up practically at dawn. I guess I just knew it was time to test my idea. I woke Ace up and told him what I was going to do. He freaked out a bit, told me not to risk it, but I guess he finally realized that I was going no matter what. And.. He kissed me! Oh my gosh, I'm still kind of freaking out. Aceaceace... I love you.
Hey, don't get mad at me for the mushy-gushy stuff. You're the one reading my diary.
Anyway, where was I?..... Oh, breaking into the grazer compound. Right.
It took forever. Sneaking in was creepily easy. Getting through was hard. I'd had to hide everytime a grazer passed, or it would compromise everything. But once they were out of sight and earshot; once it was safe to move again, another one walked by. And it's even harder to search for things if you're laying low. Eventually though, I found the building that I thought was it. No grazers coming in or out, farther away from the other buildings, and if you listened carefully, a faint electrical hum.
And there it was. Everything I was looking for, stashed in that one wooden warehouse at the back of the grazer compound. The transmitter to the collars and the electricity generator. The problem was destroying it. If I made noise, like, tearing it apart, someone would hear me and come before I could finish. I doubt I could have anyway. That was some extreme equipment, and, hello , I'm not Blake/ Incredible Hulk.
But after a minute, it became obvious. There were crates in the corner of the room holding extra cans of gasoline for the grazer Humvees. The warehouse was entirely wood. A lighter lay discarded on the ground. This place would have to go up in flames.
I'm not going to tell you exactly how I did it, just in case one of the younger demigods steals this diary; but I managed to make an exploding arrow. How? I'm not entirely sure, never done it before. Maybe for a minute, my dad actually cared enough to help me.
The thing about archery is that it requires concentration above everything. A lost focus is a lost arrow. If I missed my target by an inch here, chances were I'd die before destroying it. Of course, chances were of me not making it out anyway. The second my arrow hit, the building would either explode or quickly burn. Possibly both. If I survived that, the grazers would see smoke and come find me. There really wasn't a way for me to win; but perhaps a chance for my friends to escape.
Another thing about archery; it takes a lot more practice than people think. Every part of you needs to be trained on what they need to do to let that arrow fly. Tighten your back, proper stance... It's hard. And don't get me started on shooting at an extreme angle. But of course, I was aiming for where the transmitter touched the ceiling.
The last thing I remember after letting the arrow fly was the explosion. I was blown off my feet by the shockwave. Flames danced around the entire warehouse in seconds and the smoke from the burning machinery was thick and acidic. Smaller explosions followed as the fire reached the gasoline, and by that time, I knew it was too late to make it out. I couldn't see more than a couple feet from where I was standing and felt lightheaded, thanks to the smoke. The collar around my neck clicked open and I blacked out.
-~-
I woke up at a battlefield. Smoking wreckage, sounds of gunfire, fallen people whom I really don't want to describe. My friends were standing over me, minus their collars. But why did they look so...sad? I coughed and looked at myself. Few minor burns, nothing major. "How-who- What happened?"
"Alvin saved you. Nice fire you started there, they're still trying to put it out." Blake nodded toward a column of oily black smoke in the distance.
"Thanks. For saving me." I was extremely grateful for the son of Poseidon. He nodded.
"Um, Devin? There's something you should know..." Cara started.
"One minute. Where's Ace?"
She looked down and moved to the side. I took me a second to see the figure on the ground behind her, a sword through his stomach, exactly like my cursed vision. Ace. I was too late.
