Poppytail walked into the HillClan camp and sighed. It was a beautiful day, really. She'd trade a lot of finch feathers for today to be anyday. But since she couldn't do that,s he decided to keep going with her life. She settled down to eat next to Russelleaf, and Grasscloud. The two warriors were talking about their apprentices. Poppytail stared at the shy Russelleaf. It was her first apprentice.
"How is training Rowanpaw working?" asked Grasscloud. He was a senior warrior, one of the oldest and brightest of the Clan's senior warriors. The Clan valued his intelligence and loyalty. He was a great member to the Clan. She nodded to him and lied down. He had been a warrior when she was an apprentice, making him older than her.
"Hello, Poppytail," the others greeted.
"Hi, Grasscloud. Russelleaf." She dipped her head to them as she spoke, then lied down. She decided to listen instead of talk.
"So, how is training Rowanpaw, Russelleaf?"
He shook his head. "We went on a morning border patrol, but Amberface wants us to take the rest of the day to hunt. I think he's getting tired." he added.
Which is why I don't have an apprentice, though Poppytail to herself.
Grasscloud nodded. "I'm worrying about our deputy. Amberface is a great, loyal cat, but she is still grieving over the loss of Talonfang." The older deputy--who had been Amberface's mate--had been killed of the weakness of the HillClan home. He had been hit by a moving monster that had taken so many lives already.
"Quite frankly," put in Poppytail. She felt such an urge to talk she couldn't resist. "I don't understand what Smashstar was thinking. Amberface is a great warrior, and she works really hard, but we have more qualified, SENIOR warriors that could've filled the position."
Russelleaf stared at her shyly. "But Amberface was the closest cat to Talonfang at the time. She would know all about his plans and what he wanted to go on. Besides, she acts wonderfully as the current deputy."
Grasscloud and Poppytail nodded, agreeing. "Perhaps," put in Grasscloud, staring at the ground.
"But to abandon her kits...!" Poppytail glared at the ground. She was a senior warrior, but she couldn't understand why ANYONE would give up their kits like that. "They were his too, you know," she added sadly.
"Yes," said Grasscloud, rising to his feet. "And Waterecho is more than capable of caring for them."
"True, true," said Poppytail, rising to her feet also. And the three HillClan warriors turned back to their duties.
