“Dad!!! It smells so delicious!” Billy went by the barbeque and stole a bite of stake.
“Ouch…” he said as his fingers meat hot meat.
“That’s what you get when you rush to eat” Hugh laughed at him, turning the stakes to the other side.
It was three p.m. and he began preparing the lunch a half an hour ago. Lisa took care of the mushrooms, just like Elyon said. She made lunch for Nick too.
Now, Elyon was busy drawing something at the table, Becca was swimming in the pool, though Lisa told her lunch would be soon, she didn’t listen. As always.
Charlie was napping on the garden couch, seemed like he didn’t get enough sleep.
Lisa was feeding Nick and Billy was, still, trying to steal bites from the barbeque.
Hugh enjoyed it so much, it really scared him though. He had no idea when would his dream end. If you asked him, he could have woken up every second.
“Lunch is done! Come, Becks, get out of that pool” Hugh called everyone to the meal.
They all gathered around the garden table and started eating. Hugh couldn’t hold onto the laugh. Elyon was so hungry she tried to shove a whole stake into her mouth.
“Ely, eat properly” Lisa scolded her daughter; she was still trying to feed Nick. Somehow he didn’t want to open his mouth. Hugh didn’t know whether that was weird or not. Lisa was ‘feeding’ him for almost twenty minutes.
He looked away and his eyes met Becca’s.
“You are going to wet all the furniture” Hugh grinned at her. She was completely drenched. She was hungry as well, and because of that, she didn’t find time to dry herself with a towel after she got out of the pool.
She smiled back at him.
“I can’t help it… Your barbeque is exquisite.”
Hugh felt a little bit proud of himself. Yes, he already knew how his kids liked their stakes, but he had no idea if he could make a good one for Elyon. She wasn’t complaining and catching her still trying to chew on a big piece of stake, Hugh figured he did well with her stake too.
It was pretty entertaining, this all ‘dreaming’ thing. He got to experience something he wouldn’t normally get in touch with. He would wake once, find himself just how he always was, alone in bed, alone at home, his kids in England, unfinished papers next to bed, no Elyon, no Nick, and no… Lisa.
He felt a pang of sadness form somewhere within him and he felt the urge to use those precious moments he had with his ‘new’ family fully.
He glanced at Lisa, who was a little bit turned with her back to Nick, sitting next to him, and spayed his hand around her waist protectively.
She turned around just enough to catch his gaze and smiled. She was about to say something but their son interrupted her, bursting in a sudden form of cry or something between laughter and sobbing.
“Ugh!!!” Lisa pressed her teeth together. “He just won’t eat!”
She placed his little plate on the table and tried to get him out of his baby chair.
She placed him on her lap, and tried to feed him from there. He just wouldn’t open his mouth! He kept turning his head away from Lisa, and when Lisa put a spoon in his little hand, he threw it back on the plate.
He wasn’t a baby anymore, he was a toddler. He could obviously eat by himself and Hugh had no idea why Lisa had such a hard time feeding him. Maybe he just wasn’t hungry.
Lisa, now thoroughly annoyed, took Nick from her lap and gave him to Hugh.
“You feed him, I’m done. He never acted like this before. He always eats by himself, I have no idea what has gotten into him”
Taking him in his arms, Hugh realized he had no idea what he should do.
The boy blinked a couple of times and as Hugh smiled at him, he smiled back.
Nick sat on Hugh’s lap voluntarily and put his hands on the table, mimicking Elyon he started shoving pieces of Hugh’s stake in his little mouth.
Lisa’s jaw dropped.
“I can’t believe it! Since when do you eat meat?” Lisa turned to Nicholas, but he seemed to ignore the surprised tone of his mother’s voice and proceeded to chew on Hugh’s meal.
Hugh grinned. He was happy all his kids ate meat. It wasn’t that he had a problem with accepting his kids eating like Lisa, he just thought it would be healthier for them to eat like he did. At least healthier for Elyon and Nick, they were still growing.
Lisa didn’t fail to notice Hugh’s facial expression and she punched with elbow below the ribs.
“Nice time to gloat.” She murmured and failed to keep her voice down so everyone could hear her.
Becca and Charlie started laughing.
Hugh joined them. It was all so funny and all so real.
He was happy, but he knew that couldn’t last long.
Nick turned his head to Lisa and smiling he asked
“Daddy?” like he was looking for him.
Lisa smiled at Nicky, and a little bit confused she replied to the little toddler
“He’s here sweetie, he’s holding you”
Everyone stopped eating for a second and as Nick shouted a little “No! Daddy not ‘ere” everyone fell silent and their eyes fell on Hugh.
Yes, Hugh knew his happiness wouldn’t last long.
Hm...
