livemocha.com Its got basics with Kanji. I suggest getting a dictionary and a phrase book also. It makes things easier. Otherwise I suggest taking a Japanese class in college or getting rosetta stone. Kanji is hard to learn if you don't know the language itself first so focus on that.

there is over 300 kanji! and many rules on them and stroke orders.. however it would be handy to learn your everyday kanji's because they are on everything..

Kanji is by far harder for me. there are approximately 1945 characters that japanese people are required to learn. The link below is all of the kanji learned in school, take your time though, I find them really hard to study. For every one kanji you need to learn three meanings: The actual meaning of the kanji, the japanese reading(kun'yomi), and the chinese reading(on'yomi)

To learn Hiragana/Katakana I used this website.

As for the website above, I repeatedly took the "quiz" and learned Hiragana/Katakana pretty quickly, it was extremely helpful.

As for words in japanese, I watch a lot of anime and I picked up on basic Japanese vocabulary, so I suggest watching many Japanese movies or shows, and you'll pick up on some vocabulary eventually.
