Kate's eyes opened, she was laying on her side on a warm soft surface. Her eyes scanned over her paws, that is odd. The gashes that Buddy left there were no longer visible, as were the gashes on her belly and the bite wounds around her neck. Her whole body was free of pain and hurt. Kate got to her feet and looked around, it was very beautiful out here. Kate heard water running and followed that noise, she fancied a drink right now. A walking bridge came into sight and it was then she recognized this place.
It was the place Jon had brought her that spring night so long ago after he had saved her and Stormy from that evil man with the metal tongs to have a little talk with her. Off to the right she saw the bench he had sat on that overlooked the creek, Kate walked up to it and gazed into the water, a lone raft was perched there. Something was telling her to get on it so she did, once she was fully on it the raft began to gently float downstream to where she did not know. All was silent around her, all she could hear was the trickle of water. Farther and farther she floated, Kate lay down on the planks and rested. What was with this place? How was she healed completely all the sudden and free of pain? Kate's heart felt happy and she herself felt like she could just fly.
It was then Kate meandered around a corner and came to a clearing that turned into a meadow, the raft went toward it and stopped by the bank, this must be where she was to depart. Kate leaped off onto the opposite bank and began walking through the meadow. Kate did not know quite where she was going but her heart seemed to be guiding her there.
Off in the distance was a bright golden light, the outline of a man was walking toward her. He was tall and powerful and familiar. As he got closer Kate could now make out the features on his handsome face. Brilliant blue eyes that sparkled like sapphire. He also wore a half smile.
Without even thinking Kate began to run to him, her legs carrying her faster and faster, the joy and happiness bursting inside her. Another thing she noticed was she was not tiring or even panting yet. The man got down on his knees and opened his arms wide to greet her. Kate leapt into his arms, feeling the warmth of him and his muscular arms again sent a chill up her spine. Kate nuzzled him and her tail wagged like crazy. The words were finally on the tip of her tongue, Kate had been wanting to say them ever since that night she saw his figure in the rain.
"I love you," said Kate.
The end.
Epilogue: Paul never did know the full extent of what happened that night, he came home from his business trip and got a call from the vet. Someone had identified Kate's body and it was turned over to him. She was buried out under the beautiful apple tree overlooking the yard down to the creek. Stormy only lived two more weeks when she too made the journey home and joined Kate and Jon on the other side, she was buried right under the same tree next to Kate. Buddy's body however was never found.
