Hey, this is my first smacked and CSI: NY fanfiction :D I hope you guys like it.

I wrote this fanfic in german, because that's my mother tongue, and I found a very nice person here on fanpop who translated it into english for me.

That person is Kegel. :) So, go over to her profile and give her props for translating my first chapter, because without her you probs wouldn't have the chance to read it or maybe read it a crappy translation of mine. *gg*

So, special thanks to Kegel ;)

If someone wants to read the fanfic in german, here is the link: link

Is there something you want to say?

Quietly, almost hesitatingly, she opened the glass door that led into the lab. Closing the door behind her and switching on the light, she looked around nervously once more. The corridor was devoid of people though, and the only light that was on was the one in the lab.

Stella breathed deeply, slowly approaching the lab bench.

Her fingers that were holding a small plastic bag were shaking slightly and she sighed. In the next moment she laid the plastic bag aside and buried her head in her hands. It was late, already dark outside, and the others had already gone home some time ago. She should actually be sitting at home now as well, and not here.

“Stella?”

Startled, she lifted her head and turned around. Mac had opened the door of the lab.

“Mac? You're still here?”

“I was just about to ask you the same. It's late.” He glanced at his watch.

“Yeah...,” Stella shook her head slightly, and forced a tired smile on her face. “I wasn't able to get the case of the raped girl out of my head.”

Mac frowned. “Yeah. The perp was really careful. No prints, no traces of sperm, nor anything else that could lead us to him. The only thing we were able to find was a ripped-off button from his coat.”

“Which isn't much ...,” Stella muttered thoughtfully.

“It's something. We'll get him.”

She nodded. “Yeah.”

There was silence for a moment.

“Don't go home too late, Stel.”

“I won't stay long,” she assured him, smiling.

“Okay. See you tomorrow,” Mac nodded, turned around and closed the door behind him. Stella kept looking at him until he vanished around the corner.

Then she exhaled, and turned back to the small plastic bag with a sigh. She had just had a second chance to talk with Mac, but she had wasted it again...

She had already gone once to Mac's office this day to tell him something important. At the end, however, she had not done it. What had kept her from it...? She could not tell anymore, but it had probably been fear. Fear to do something that she could not take back. Fear to unleash something bad.

She did not know what she should do. Was the reasonable Stella the one who went to Mac and told him everything? Or was it more reasonable to do what was demanded from her?

There was always a third way... wasn't there?

When she had been standing in Mac's office this afternoon, she had had the feeling that she was being watched. The cleaning woman had suddenly seemed so suspicious... and the lab tech ... even Sid's forensic trainee who had just walked by Mac's office at that very moment.

And Stella had remained silent...

Her shaking hands opened the small plastic bag and took out the dark blue button. Stella turned the small thing back and forth, beholding it, lost in thought.

This button was currently the only clue they had in their newest homicide case. There was a small blood drop on it that Lindsay had already analysed. As they had expected, it was the blood of the victim.

Stella stood up and left the lab with the small button in her cold hand. She slipped into her coat, turned off the light and left the building where she worked. When she arrived outside, she looked up. There was still a light on in Mac's office. It hardly surprised her anymore. He was often in his office until late.

It was raining and Stella hurried to cross the street. She turned into the next alley and went on until she reached a small bridge.

There she leaned onto the cold, rusty railing and looked down. The water of the river was dark, almost black.

She brushed through her curly hair. She could not believe what she was about to do.

She mustn't...she had never thought that it would come to this one day. The button was the only evidence they had right now.

With a single movement Stella Bonasera let it drop, and with a silent scream she watched it being swallowed by the cold, dark water of the river.

Mac stormed into the Chief's office.

"Ahh Mac,"

"No. Don't Ahh Mac me! I want to know why Peyton is back on my team?!"

"She is right for the job Mac,"

"No! You know aswell as I do that Stella and Peyton don't like each other and everyone can tell off the tension between those two in the team. Lindsay, Danny, Flack, they can all tell something is wrong. Hawkes, Sid, heck even Adam can tell of the tension and he only works two days a week! Either you sack Peyton or I might just do it myself!"

"Mac sit down!" The Chief shouted," Listen here, if things get out of hand then maybe I will have to take...

At seven I leave. Horatio didn’t come back so I suppose he had something important to do. I hope he’ll never come back!
I don’t go home. The last thing I need now is to sit alone in my apartment. I decide to go to my favorite bar and eat something. The bar is empty, it’s too early. But I don’t mind. The barkeeper George always sits down next to me when he’s got nothing to work and then we talk. Today he keeps my company for one and a half hour but then other guests come and he has to work. I leave my table in the corner and sit down...
