How Tove Lo became the wildest, darkest, freakiest new force in pop
Stockholm, Los Angeles, a jungle in Nicaragua—Tove Lo’s new album,
“I had so much to get off my chest after these past two years of amazing madness,” the Swedish pop star told EW Radio’s Kyle Anderson and Julia Cunningham at EW PopFest (where her BFFs Icona Pop presented her with a birthday cake on stage). “[The trips were] all about writing, which I really needed.”
While attending a writing camp in Nicaragua, Lo worked with British singer-songwriter Joe Janiak, known for co-writing Britney Spears’ recent single “Make Me…” Though the two knew each other socially, Lo and Janiak had never written together before until then—and they got a little help from the animal kingdom. Halfway through writing what became their
duet, “Vibes,” they paused work to go on a catamaran field trip with the rest of the writing camp. “It was amazing, we were lying on that net tilting our heads back and then out of nowhere 10 dolphins come jumping out of the water,” Lo said. “We were freaking out. And then we went back into the studio and worked till 4 a.m. and wrote this song … We all need dolphin breaks. It was good luck to see them.”
