This is just something I've been noticing for a while. I just wanted to throw it out there.

Thirteen has gone through a series of changes throughout the short time she’s been on the show. She’s been on House a little over a season and she’s gone through not one, but three major changes. According to spoilers Thirteen will go through another major change in episode 5x09, Last Resort. “…we’ll see a change in Thirteen. A change for the better.”

When Thirteen first appeared on the show she gave off sort of an outgoing, intriguing, flirty, mysterious aura, almost like she was keeping everything to herself on purpose. We even see her flat-out refuse to tell a colleague her name. She tells Bosley, “Call me Thirteen. I’m not getting invested.”

The first change occurs at the end of episode 4x03, 97 Seconds. I believe it’s connected to, what was almost definitely the first time she lost a patient. Stark’s death and the death of his dog resulted directly from the fact that Thirteen didn’t stick around to make sure the patient take the pills. She was distracted when Kutner and Brennan came in to run their own tests on the patients and forgot about her own prescribed treatment.

In the following episodes Thirteen still has an air of mysteriousness and intrigue, however the slight flirtiness is gone, and she is noticeably less outgoing. This change is further amplified with what Amber and the patient do to Thirteen in the next episode, 4x04, Guardian Angels.

The next change Thirteen experiences is during episode 4x08, You Don’t Want to Know. The experience that House puts her through, making her think that she was beginning to show symptoms of a fatal genetic condition, results in the loss of the mysteriousness. She still has the intrigue, but the mysteriousness has become mere secrecy, and she continues to become outgoing.

The last change that we’ve seen so far is definitely the most obvious. After the season finale, episode 4x16, Wilson’s Heart, when Thirteen discovers that she does indeed have a fatal genetic disorder, she takes a sharp turn for the worse. She becomes surprisingly less secretive, but she also becomes reckless and self-destructive. She begins to push away her colleagues and refuse help. Her loneliness results in one-night stands, one of which is with a woman who becomes a patient of hers. She connects with the patient when she’s diagnosed with a disease that gives her a life expectancy of only ten more years, however, when the woman is diagnosed with a different disease that is curable Thirteen states, “I feel alone, and she hasn’t gone anywhere.”

These changes are reflected in her appearance. As the show goes on she begins to wear less makeup, spend less time on her hair, and wear darker colors.

Thirteen has really been on a very gradual downward spiral since the beginning of her time on the show. Surprisingly, a character who hasn’t been on the show for very long at all has proved to be one of the most dynamic characters.
