2x25: Wasted years, wasted gain
Rachel limped into the kitchen the next morning surprising Atie who had a spoonful of cereal in her mouth. She quickly swallowed her food and raised her eyebrows at her sister, “What’s going on?”
“You tell me?” Rachel said hysterically. “Where is Rana?”
“She moved out, remember?”
“No, I remember her telling me she’s moving out but I didn’t know she was going to do it right away? And why didn’t she ask for my help?” Rachel pouted.
“Because, hello!” Atie said pointing to Rachel's’ crutches. “No offense but you can barely move yourself how are you going to move boxes?”
Rachel sighed and sat down, “I know she’s independent and likes doing things on her own, but I don’t get it. She usually always checks in with me.” Rachel said leaning her head down on the counter. “Something's off?”
Atie began to panick, “Nothing's wrong. You're so dramatic. Go away.” Atie mumbled getting up and placing her bowl in the sink.
“I even made her cheesecake last night.” Rachel pouted.
Atie sighed, “She didn’t die.” Atie laughed. “You know how she is. She needs her privacy so she’s just going to be in the apartment temporarily while she works and you get back on your feet and then she’ll give up the apartment and go back to California. That’s probably why she didn’t bother to show you the place, it’s only temporary.”
“I still want to see her place.” Rachel said. “I’m her big sister, it’s my right. I have an idea.” Rachel said getting up and limping to the fridge and pulling the cheesecake out. “Let’s go to her new place and surprise her with cake.” Rachel smiled.
Atie looked at her in shock, “Uh, no!”
“Why not?” Rachel asked.
“I don’t know. I just think she should get settled in first.” Atie said panicking.
“That’s ridiculous. We’re going to go see her.” Rachel said determined. “Come on you have to drive.”
“Okay, but I should text Rana first.” Atie said grabbing her phone.
Rachel rolled her eyes and grabbed Atie’s phone, “No, that’ beats the whole purpose of a surprise. Now come on.”
Atie groaned and threw her head back. This was going to be bad.
Atie drove up in front of the building and stopped. Rachel looked up in shock, “Wait this is the building Robb stays in. How did Rana afford this place?” Rachel asked in shock.
“Um, I don’t know.”
Rachel raised her eyebrows, “This is weird. Well lead me to her condo I guess?” Rachel said still confused.
Atie nodded. She wanted to punch herself in her face multiple times and then stick her finger in fire. It would be less painful. “Okay.” she said sighing. She led Atie up to the apartment and stopped in front of it.
“No, this is wrong.” Rachel said surprised. “This is Robb’s condo.”
“Yup.” Atie said nodding her head.
“Atie what’s going on?” Rachel asked turning towards her sister.
“So, maybe Rana is staying with Robb.” Atie said nervously.
Rachel stared at her sister in shock, “What? I’m so...what? Why?”
“Because Rana is thinking of switching over to law and Robb offered her a job as his secretary.” Atie said lying smoothly.
Rachel shook her head tears brimming in her eyes, “I can’t believe both of you.” She said angrily shoving the cake in Atie’s arms and turning around limping away.
“Rachel!” Atie called after her. “Rachel, come on!” Atie wanted to tell her sister the truth but what was she supposed to say. She couldn’t exactly tell her that Rana was pregnant and Robb was handing the adoption, now could she?
Rana had heard the noise from outside, to her horror realizing that Rachel and Atie were there. What the hell? She got up quickly, getting out of the apartment to find Atie standing there with cake while Rachel was trying to limp away, which wasn't going so well.
"Crap", she muttered.
Rachel turned her eyes to her sister, staring at her with a teary expression. "I cannot believe you. I understand you wanting to live on your own, but what on earth compels you to move in with my ex-boyfriend?!"
"This is not about you! I wanted a place to stay!" Rana yelled. "This was as good as any!"
Rachel swallowed, trying to not cry. "How could you do this to me? When Robb and I were dating, you hated him! Now you're best friends?"
Rana sighed. She knew exactly what she had to say to get her to understand, but it would suck. "This is not about you! And even if it was, can you really blame me for wanting a break from the sobbing mess that you are?!" She snapped. "Look at yourself! I can't deal with that!"
Rachel stared at her sister in shock before looking down at herself. Rana was right, she was pathetic. So she said nothing, merely continued her journey out of the building without looking back.
"That was mean", Atie sighed.
"It's better than breaking her heart with the truth", Rana murmured. She looked at her sister. "I wish you hadn't brought her here."
Atie bit her lip. "Yeah, me too. I'm sorry."
Rana gave a sad smile. "It is what it is", with that she walked into the apartment and shut the door. And as Atie stood alone in the hallway, she felt more helpless than ever.
