Dear Mr. Obama,
You probably get a bunch of letter every day, but I’m asking you to pay special attention to this particular letter. I’m concerned about the bullying in this country. I know many friends who have been bullied and they are always depressed. Steps should be taken immediately to help make a difference and stop the bullying.
There are many reasons to help me. On big reason would be is it benefits you. This will look good on your campaign for the 2012 election. It has been said about you that you haven’t done much this term to benefit America. I believe differently, but many voting adults don’t. If you take actions to help stop the bullying you may be able to sway others to vote for you this upcoming election if you decide to run for president again.
Mr. President think of all the kids who dread going to school because of all the bullies. They go home and sob in their room. Too scared to tell anyone about the bullies. They are afraid they will get bullied more harshly. Think of your daughters. Would you want them to get bullied in school?? That could very well be happening, but she’s too scared to tell anyone. Now think of every other child in America who is going through that. I’m speaking up for them right now. I want you to help stop it so we can make more of a difference then just me helping one or two kids.
Recent stats show that 1 out of every 4 kids are bullied. That means 1 out of every 4 kids could die from homicide or suicide. I came across very depressing stats one day in my research which shows you how little help bullied kids get. On the playground every 7 minutes a child is bullied and only 4% of the time there is adult intervention. Peer intervention happens only 11% of the time. And no intervention by any kind happens 85% of the time. Bullied kids tend to need others to stick up for them. That’s what I intend to do. But I don’t want to just help a handful of kids. I want to help 100 handfuls of kids. Bullying needs to stop and it needs to stop now.
To stop bullying we need to get down to the roots of the problem. Most bullying starts at home when kids are abused by their father and/or mother. This leads to violence at school which leads to serious bullying. The old accuse of bullies is that they have a low self-esteem and like to put down others. However researchers have found that this isn’t always the case. It’s turned up multiple times in my researchers that bullying starts at home. Bullies lack compassion, impulse control and social skills. They don’t know how to act with other people, hence the lack of social skills. One way to stop that is to help bullies gain the things they are lacking. They usually lack these qualities because again, they have been bullied at home or somewhere else.
I’ve focused mainly on bullies with younger children, but it also happens at the workplace with adults. It seems like adults do tell others, such as their bosses, but they were always dismissed. CareerBuilder surveyed 5,671 US workers and 1 out of 4 adults have felt bullied in their work. The most common bully however is the boss. According to the survey 14% of workers have felt bullied by their immediate supervisor and 11% feel bullied by a co-worker. 7% say it isn’t their boss but someone higher up in power. Another 7% say it’s by a customer. The most likely gender and age to get bullied is woman 55 and older or 24 and younger.
Another common area for bullying is cyber bullying. This is a big area. As many cannot stop it because some don’t even know the person in real life. More than 1 out of 3 children have been bullied over the internet, mobile phones, and/or other means of cyber bullying. Many don’t tell their parents because they are scared and/or embarrassed. This is why I’m taking action and trying to get something done to stop bullying in its tracks. Only 1 out of 10 teens tell their parents they have been cyber bullied. And less than 1 in 5 children have gone to the law over cyber bullying. Mobile phones are the most common form of cyber bullying. Cyber bullying victims consider suicide and half a low self-esteem more than any other form of bullying.
There are many so-called programs to stop bullying, but being a kid myself none of these work. No one follows them. I think the only useful thing teachers and counselors tell us is to go to an adult. Stopping it yourself never works. Going to an adult always works as long as the adult takes action. One step that I think should be taken immediately is working to pass a law that allows some form of punishment when severe bullying takes place. Instead of this law only applying to a few states it should go for all of them. Why should bullying be stopped in some states and not all?
Bullying is a big problem in the US right now. Big steps need to be taken to stop it and I believe you are the big step we need. I would appreciate if you contacted me back. Steps should be taken soon.
Sincerely,
