Petalfur padded to Leopardstar's den and peered in. She had been warned multiple times that Leopardstar ought to know before it became too obvious.
She pushed at the lichen hanging from her leader's den. "Leopardstar," she called softly. She nosed her way inside at her brave leader's call for entrance. "Leopardstar, it's Petalfur. I thought you'd want to know something...I'm expecting kits."
Leopardstar looked up. "That's good," she declared instantly. "RiverClan needs kits. But you've recently come home for a journey...I would appreciate knowing who the father is."
Petalfur dipped her head. "Reedwhisker is the father."
Leopardstar narrowed her eyes, then nodded. "Kits are a blessing," she murmured. "We all must remember that. Reedwhisker is a great cat, and you are an excellent warrior. They will have skill unmatched by any cat. Even Firestar will be afraid."
Petalfur felt the fur stick up along her spine. What did Leopardstar mean, Firestar will fear them. She didn't want to have the most fearsome cats in all the Clans. Sure she wanted brave, strong warriors, but what did it matter if the other Clans feared them as long as they were loyal to RiverClan.
She's scared, that's why. She just wants the safety of her Clan. She has given you a great compliment. Be proud.
Following her own advice, Petalfur dipped her head and felt pride seep through her. Her Clan might be going through a crisis, but they'd survive. Only one detail overdid all of this.
Leopardstar's on her last life.
Backing out of Leopardstar's den, and heading to find the Reedwhisker and share her news, Petalfur reminded herself that she would soon need to tell Mistyfoot as so the RiverClan deputy was aware. I'll make Leopardstar proud of me. she vowed. Bringing the lake back was an honor, but I want to do even better. I want Leopardstar to be proud of me for many moons in StarClan. I want her to look down and think of all I did for RiverClan. She'll remember me like Crookedstar remembers her...
