Hey guys! Long time no post! Anyway... here, I'm gonna talk about a particular subject that has been bothering me for the longest time. And that would be... mary-sues. Note: If you yourself have a mary-sue/gary stu character, make sure you read this please. Maybe you can learn something. Let's do this!
So... if anyone here doesn't know already, a mary-sue is, and I quote directly from Urban Dictionary, A mary-sue "is usually written by a beginning author. Often, the Mary Sue is a self-insert with a few "improvements" (ex. better body, more popular, etc). The Mary Sue character is almost always beautiful, smart, etc... In short, she is the "perfect" girl. The Mary Sue usually falls in love with the author's favorite character(s) and winds up upstaging all of the other characters in the book/series/universe." Now that you know, let's talk about where mary-sues generally are in such fandoms.
I've mostly seen characters from the Naruto fanbase than the Sonic fanbase. Which, in my opinion, is really strange. Though, I have seen a few overpowered characters in the Sonic fandom. Right now, let's just stick to the side of the Sonic fandom.
What bothers me most about the character is that, they are almost always VERY overpowered. They usually have like all these different forms ranging from super, dark, hyper, ect. The fact that you even say your character has a super form gives your character an impression that he/she is a mary sue/gary-stu. One rule to a successful character: Do NOT give your character all these excessive forms/powers that another character doesn't have. I'm cool with people letting their characters have powers and stuff, as long as they don't overpower the other person's character. I've seen some pretty nice oc's with awesome powers here, and they don't seem to overpower a different character. It's just that most oc creators in fandoms go a little too overboard with the powers and crap. How about making your character normal, huh?
And the fact that they make up the most ridiculous backstory just makes me shake my head and say "what the heck is this?" Listen. Don't make your character related to the canon character in whatever fandom you're in. Because that would make people feel turned off by your oc.
And please. Girls. Having your oc go out with a male official character from whatever fandom you're in is great. I don't care. In fact, I actually support it a little. Hell, I have a character going out with an official character from the Sonic series (if you know me, and have done rps with me before, you'll know who it is xD). But please. Please, please, PLEASE do not make them out of character. Then you're just ruining the character's persona to see how you see fit. I've seen one person do this, and it drove me crazy (take a guess at who that person was.). You can make the character go out with your character as long as you want. But don't change their personality to benefit yourself.
I think I've pretty much covered everything I've needed to say on this topic. Talking anymore about it will give me a headache. I hope you found this opinion article a bit helpful on how NOT making your character a mary-sue/gary stu. Until then, see you later!
