My heart stops and my vision becomes blurry as I look around for Sweetie Belle.
Fleur de Lis had just called her name for the Reaping. She motions the royal guard to find her and when they do, Sweetie does as she's ordered. And that is to go up to the stage.
I quickly trot to catch up to her and the guards, the ponies of my district, Alicorn, move out of the way as if I told them to so I can get to my sister.
"Sweetie? Sweetie!" I shout at the top of my lungs. A bead of sweat forms at my purple forehead.
The royal guards see me and immediately try to stop me but I keep pushing to get to Sweetie Belle.
"I volunteer!" I scream regretfully. "I volunteer as tribute!"
The guards eye me menacingly and move out of my way. I stand tall on all fours, trying my hardest not to burst into tears because of the stupid thing I did to save Sweetie's life.
"Well well well!" Fleur de Lis cheers as Sweetie Belle runs to me. I dry her tears with my hooves and tell her not to cry.
"It seems we have a volunteer!"
This surprises our district because we rarely have volunteers. The routine is: Fleur de Lis chooses the pony's name and they go off to Canterlot. I'm making pony history.
As I start to walk to the stage, Sweetie grabs hold of my back hooves and screams, "No! No Twilight! You can't go! You just can't!"
"Sweetie, let go." I say strictly to scare my sister away. She's practically making me want to cry while saying that.
Sweetie Belle keeps wasting all her tears on me but Big Macintosh carries her away as she yells to me. "No! No Twilight! I don't want you to d-" Then Mac shuts her up using his hoof.
I reach the stage and Fleur de Lis leads me to the top. I can see everypony staring at me, probably judging me because of the way I saved Sweetie's life.
"And now for the colts!" Fleur announces and tentatively swipes away one slip with messy handwriting on it using her snow white horn.
I stare at the paper, knowing that anyone she picked will be my partner and possibly the one responsible for my death.
"Braeburn Appletan!"
The crowd of ponies turn heads to search for Braeburn but I know exactly where he is. Royal guard fetch him as he looks at them, shocked.
I know him. I recognize him. Braeburn saved my life.
I was starving, I couldn't feed myself that day. I was lying on the ground, rain falling from the sky thanks to the pegasi and he was just there. Braeburn fed the pigs he owned at his family's bakery fresh bread. Oh how I wished to be them.
He saw me. Then he purposely threw the bread into a mud puddle before me and trotted back inside before his mother found out.
Braeburn finally makes it next to me on stage. Fleur de Lis flashes us a smile but I can tell she feels bad for us.
"Ladies and gentlecolts! Our tributes, Braeburn and Twilight Sparkle! Let's all give them a round of applause!"
No one follows Fleur's instructions. Only something amazing happens. The citizens of Alicorn take their hooves and raise them in the air with no expression on their faces. It's a salute that is used all around Marem but it's mostly likely used here to tell ponies that they love us and they will cherish us in their hearts.
