The 88th Academy Awards, popularly known as The Oscars are scheduled to be held on 28th February 2016 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, California. The ceremony which will be presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) will begin at 5.30 pm PST and 24 awards will be presented in various categories. The ceremony is being produced by David Hill and Reginald Hudling and will be aired by ABC in USA.

Actor Chris Rock will host the award show.

On 14th January 2016, Academy President Cheryl Bone Isaacs, directors Guillermo del Toro, Ang Lee and actor John Krasinski announced the 88th Academy Awards nominations in 24 categories.

3.    Brooklyn

Brooklyn, directed by John Crowley is an incredibly moving story about an Irish immigrant in 1950sNew York. Starring Saoirse Ronan, this film made 40.4 million USD at the box office.

4.    Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth film in the Mad Max film series, directed by George Miller. The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where water is a scarcity. Starring Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy, this film made 375.8 million USD at the box office.

5.    The Martian

The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott is the screen adaptation of Andy Weir's novel, 'The Martian'. Starring Matt Damon, this film made 598.9 million USD at the box office. The film centres around Mark Watney, an astronaut who gets left behind on the planet Mars.

6.    The Revenant

The Revenant, directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu is based on a terrifying true story about legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass, who survives a brutal bear attack and must find his way back to his family. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, this film made 288 million USD at the box office.

7.    Room

Room, directed by Lenny Abrahamson is based on the novel 'Room' by Emma Donoghue. The film revolves around a young woman and her son who after being held captive for several years, finally gain freedom. Starring Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay, this film made 15.9 million USD at the box office.

8.    Spotlight

Spotlight, directed by Tom McCarthy is a film about several journalists who investigated allegations of molestation against John Geoghan, a priest in 2001. Starring Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton, this film made 36.8 million USD at the box office.
