Denali the male wolf
The two newest additions to the International Wolf Center's ambassador pack, Aidan and Denali were successfully introduced to the Exhibit Pack on August 4th, 2008. Aidan and Denali, two gray wolf pups, were born on April 27, 2008 at the Wildlife Science Center in Forest Lake, Minnesota. The complete introduction took approximately 45 minutes. Under the right conditions, most wolves and wolf packs are very caring towards wolf pups, sharing feeding and pup-sitting duties and indulging in play. With the addition of the two pups to the Exhibit Pack, the Center now has, for the first time, three subspecies of the gray wolf and three age groups-the arctic wolves (Canis lupus arctos) born in 2000, Great Plains wolves (Canis lupus nubilus) born in 2004 and Rocky Mountain wolves (Canis lupus occidentalis) born in 2008. Aidan and Denali will now have weekly updates posted to reveal their individual personalities and how they are integrating into this socially dynamic pack, please check the individual logs for details.

Lori Schmidt - During the Working for Wolves weekend, we pressure washed the pond and have refilled with clean water. We still have a little frozen line and haven't been able to pump to the upper pond yet, but Denali enjoys the chance to get back to swimming. He's still wrestling with Aidan and is usually on top doing a squash while Aidan submits. The crew did a tremendous job hauling the old straw to the enclosure edge to serve as mulch for a future seeding project. This provides many opportunites for small rodents to burrow in the straw and gives Denali a lot of opportunity for hunting.

Lori Schmidt - This weekend is the Working for Wolves weekend, and due to the significant amount of preparation work, we will be posting the same text for all the logs. The main priorities for this weekend include straw removal, cleaning and filling the ponds in the Exhibit and Retired Enclosure, putting a roof and protective walls on the medical enclosure and starting the fence layout for Grizzer’s new enclosure. It will be a busy weekend, and work will continue in the upcoming weeks on Grizzer’s habitat. The goal is to get him into the new area by June 15th. All the wolves are doing well. Aidan and Denali are having no problem eating their entire deer carcass on weekends, and Shadow and Malik are transitioning to more food carcass meals with chicken on Tuesday and Thursdays. Grizzer gets chicken on a daily basis as he has a small area left to heal from his head and we want to maximize his nutrition to keep is immune system strong. Someone emailed with concern about Malik in the den, because he sleeps so soundly, they were concerned that there was something wrong. Old wolves do like their sleep, but we keep the camera on the wolves and staff are aware of their condition.

A knocking, loud and then soft.
A calling, sweet and tender,
I looked but it was gone
Sweet smells the barn loft.
A corner, around it went
The swift moves of a midnight wolf,
A panting, kind, intoxicating.
What a pleasure the moon lent.
I called it, but it disappeared
Through trees, forest, and caves.
Up and down did I search
Wondering what the message geared.
I was cornered, afraid and alone.
Touch, it reached to my heart.
Intense and nerve-racking
The green of its eyes shone.
And at the time of the gasp,
The midnight wolf was gone
With a swift move of its tail.
And I, the hare, was loose of its grasp.
I thought and realized soon
What the message was about,
That love is timid, yet a wild thing,
It only glitters in the moon.
And I thought for awhile,
Standing in the midst of a field.
When suddenly came the midnight wolf,
And the sight of it made me smile.

I looked but it was gone
Sweet smells the barn loft.

Has tales to tell,
The legends and lore
He knows so well.
From survival and feasting
On the vast plain,
From blinding blizzards
And torrential rain.
They have seen it all
As the Indians have,
Almost extinct
As the buffalo calf.
Beautiful creatures
Who stand with pride,
Few do live
And most have died.
His last request
Is a howl at the moon,
Telling his brothers
We'll be extinct real soon.
If you look into his eyes
You will see a tear,
His howl he bellows
Is all you will hear.
If mankind would stop
And try to save,
The wolf would flourish
Again one day.
Let's save these beautiful
Mystical eyes,
To tell more tales
That are so wise.
The eyes of the wolf
Has tales to tell,
His howl at the moon
We know so well.
