‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’ is a roller coaster of laughs and poignant moments
The Last Man On Earth" from last Sunday night on Fox, April 12, details the events of episode 10, titled, "Pranks for Nothin\'," and may contain spoilers. During last few weeks of "The Last Man On Earth" we found out that Phil, played by Will Forte, and Carol, played by Kristen Schaal, were not the last two people on earth. The cast has grown to include Melissa Shart, played by January Jones, Todd, played by Mel Rodriguez and in the last episode, "The Do-Over," we were introduced to Erica, played by actress Cleopatra Coleman and Gail, played by actress Mary Steenburgen.
The last episode ended badly when Phil was caught with Gail and Erica by Carol, Melissa and Todd. We last saw Phil peering out of the backseat of a car as he said, "Surprise!" while everyone was confused and upset by his constant lies and deceit. Phil reluctantly exits the car and instantly begins to insist that everything was simply a prank and his intentions were only to mastermind a joke upon the five other people who we currently know to exist in the world. No one is buying what Phil is trying to sell, and no one is more upset with Phil than his new wife Carol.
Phil tries to fix the situation with more lies, insisting that he had a wife named Carol who died before the virus, but no one is believing anything he says. Melissa simply tells Phil, "You\'re disgusting," and glares at him with rank disapproval at his entire existence. Phil stammers on about how everyone ruined his prank as he digs a deeper hole for himself when Carol finally just says, "Phil, stop talking." Todd sighs is disapproval and walks back to the car, upset that the man he once looked up to has turned out to be a pathological liar. Everyone gets in their cars and they drive off, leaving Phil behind to fend for himself.
Phil walks through the night back to the cul-de-sac they\'ve been calling home and goes to Carol\'s house where they now keep the cow. Everyone besides Carol is sitting around a table having coffee and Phil does his best to act casual as he helps himself to a cup of coffee and gets some fresh milk. No one wants to speak with him, and Phil awkwardly tries to engage them in conversation, asking if anyone knows where Carol is. When no one answers, Phil still insists that his actions the night before were part of a prank. Phil gets in everyone\'s face, trying desperately to get them to talk, but no one wants Phil around anymore and they give him the silent treatment.
Phil finds Carol in their house, and she agrees to talk, making eerie moaning sounds like a ghost. Phil tries to explain to Carol why he told Erica and Gail his wife was dead, but it falls on deaf ears, Carol has had enough of Phil Miller. Carol kicks Phil out of the house and he scampers away like a scolded, sad puppy. Phil takes refuge at the bar with his ball friends and begins to sink into a deep depression as he analyzes just exactly where he went wrong with everyone. As Phil lays down on the pool table he says, "Beds are overrated."
Gail and Erica come to visit Carol and they bring a pecan pie to break the ice. Carol is stitching together a quilt and is less than thrilled to be visited by the two women who have essentially ruined her happy home. Gail tells Carol that she sees that she is hurting very badly and offers Carol the pie, which Carol refuses. Gail asks if she\'s allergic to pecans and Carol tells her that she doesn\'t enjoy "Hussy pie." Gail and Erica take off and leave Carol to her quilting. Back at the bar, Phil tries to work on his bar tricks, but keeps dropping bottles of alcohol all over the place.
Melissa and Todd come by to visit Carol and check up on her, having heard how bad the meeting with Gail and Erica went. Carol notices the distance between the two and tells them she can handle seeing two people be affectionate and tells them to kiss. Melissa tells Carol the situation is uncomfortable but Carol eggs them on to ramp up the kissing. Carol eventually tells them she\'d like to be alone. Back at the bar, Phil is having a total mental breakdown and starts to talk to himself while laying down on the pool table.
A very drunk Phil rambles on saying, "They don\'t care where I am, \'cause they don\'t like me. Which really sad because I wanna go back. Stupid Bar. Pool Table for a bed. I was wrong. Beds are underrated. And people are underrated." He goes on to have a moment of clarity that he\'s blown things, declaring, "I really beefed it." Phil declares, "I am who I am, I can\'t just magically change into another person." Moments later Phil is shown knocking at Carol\'s door and pretends to be Mike Miller, Phil\'s twin brother. Carol slams the door on Phil and he walks away confused why his latest lie didn\'t work.
Back at the bar, after overhearing the group talk about him and his string of lies with an eavesdropping device, Phil sinks to even a deeper level of depression. Phil says to himself, "They think I\'m just some liar. I am not a liar. What have I ever done that would make them think that?" And then Phil has a moment of epiphany as he thinks back to the dozens of lies that he\'s told everyone. Phil finally admits out loud, "I am a liar." It took sinking to the deepest low and hitting rock bottom for Phil to finally do some self reflection, and we\'ll have to see if he acts like a different person now that he\'s finally decided to be honest with himself about who he is.
Phil goes to the cul-de-sac and confronts everyone about his previous lies to them all. Phil admits to Gail and Erica that he wanted to skinny dip with them and it had nothing to do with a prank. Phil then admits to Melissa that he didn\'t want to have sex with her to repopulate the earth, but because she\'s a "Friggin smokeshow." Phil admits to Todd he did not help Sting write the song, "Fields Of Gold." Finally, Phil admits to Carol that he\'s lied to her more times than he can count and that they simply should have never gotten married. Phil apologizes to Carol and then tells everyone that he just couldn\'t live another day as a liar. Phil walks away and tells everyone, "Smell ya never." Carol gets up and walks away as well.
Back at the bar, Phil is trying to come to terms with what just happened as Carol walks in and catches him talking to the sports balls. She has divorce papers that she\'s drawn up, and asks Phil to sign them, telling him that it\'s official because she was a notary. While Phil is signing the papers, Carol watches carefully as he initials all the correct spaces. When the papers are signed, and Phil and Carol are no longer married, she asks him for a hug, and Phil awkwardly obliges her. Unexpectedly, Phil then kisses Carol once, but it turns into a few kisses and it seems like some chemistry is still there. When Carol leaves, Phil turns to the sports balls with faces drawn on them and says, "So that\'s my ex-wife," and the episode comes to a close.
