I’ll start with the Scripted frightening. I myself don’t watch Pewdiepie often, but I do with Tobuscus, and with both I have seen how they react to scares and such, granted more so with Tobuscus. I can’t speak for Pewdiepie but I think it’s the same.

With games like the Walking Dead, The Last of Us, and the Witches’ House, Toby’s reactions are most probably genuine. And when I went back to back with those and the Slender gameplay, the reactions were very similar. Ergo, they are NOT scripted. I don’t think they need to be. And as more evidence, if you look at any letsplayer most of them will act just as scared, and I doubt they can all be scripted.

In more addition, I played Slender for family members, and friends, and all of them were freaking out, even though they weren’t playing. This was a variety of different people, not just people with the same interests as I.

So I can’t say that Pewdiepie isn’t scripting because I don’t watch his vids, but do believe that Toby is not, and I highly doubt Pewdiepie is either.

NOW, the scare factor.

Slender: the Eight Pages, has gotten many changes, and maps. I think the scariest would be either Sanatorium, or Elementary. Each one does bring its own atmosphere, with the always present “don’t let him get you” tactic. The games work around not getting found, and getting done before getting found. And with eerie sound effects, and the circumstances getting more and more dangerous the farther you get, PLUS in some of them having a flashlight that’s slowly losing power, it IS scary.

So why do people say it’s not? A number of reasons.
1. Spite Trolling.
Basically this is when someone hasn’t played Slender, but thinks it’s not scary at all, and wants to prove so. So when they do play it, they do it in whatever conditions they can to show how “unscary” it is. Such as being with friends, bright rooms, listening to music, or simply going over and over about how unscary it “is”.

You’re not going to get scared of something if you’re purpose is to make it nonscary, and insult it. You play it to GET scared.
2. Boredom
This is why I’m not scared of Eight Pages ANYMORE. People who first start out with Slender will get scared most of the time. But especially in Eight Page’s Woods Map, it can get long and tiresome, and drain the excitement. You’d be walking about for hours, and lose the fright. But then eventually Slenderman DOES pop up, and more times than not, people will freak out because they’ve become used to nothing happening, then all of the sudden *STATIC*.
3. Getting old
Kind of like boredom, no matter how many maps there are of it, The Eight Pages Saga does wear off after a while. It still retains some fright for fun, but it has gotten less scary.

But does this make the games non-scary? … No. All you have to do to prove this is lookup a playthrough of the games. You’ll hear screaming, you’ll hear thumps, you’ll hear dead silence from fright. These people that play it aren’t faking it, so obviously it’s scary. And just because it might not scare you, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t scare other people. It’s still just as scary as other horror games, scarier in some people’s opinions, or not as scary in other’s. But the majority DOES find fright in it, so it is scary.

But really, the Eight Pages games aren’t the best choice for fright I would say. The latest addition “Slender: The Arrival”, while making a slightly less scary static animation (in my opinion, could be wrong), puts a camera on to show your time, it has the classic flashlight, it has OTHER enemies aside from Slender, and much more interaction and environments. It lets you wander by day in the nice outdoors or indoors, but when night comes, you start to feel uneasy, then it starts.

So yeah, that’s scary.

For me the scariest that I can speak from personal experience was the FIRST Slenderman game. I think Arrival is probably the scariest, but I haven’t played it so I can’t completely give an opinion on it.

Slenderman was a low graphic pixelated game where you start out in a car next to a house, and a large yard, where there’s a building of a sort. You walk inside and an eerie happy birthday song starts, with some static. You walk to the kitchen and there’s some… figure there. Then all of the sudden Slendy pops up with a loud screech and static, then… disappears.

Soon after eerie music plays as you explore. You find a television that requires a tape. You find it, play it, and the screen lights up with “Watching you”. Behind you is Masky, who promptly hugs you… and you kill him. You then go looking for other items, and find a compass which points to things you need.

After a certain point you get a gun… and right after that, six other maskies, and Slenderman are after you. You have to kill them all, and if you don’t, you just restart. It gave a really creepy atmosphere to it, and I loved every minute of it.

So are Slender games, all slender games, scary? YES. Admittedly there are scarier games, but that doesn’t take away that even with Eight Pages, you CAN and most likely WILL get scared, or frightened.

Matt said that the jump scares were all it had going for it. Well the thing is the jumps scares are one of the main parts about it, so obviously that would be an important part. But it’s the atmosphere, the feeling of being helpless, and needing to use your whit’s to escape and maneuverer, while also knowing it’s luck-based, and any moment you could get caught and “die”.

Hope you enjoyed, have an opinion type it in the comments.
