Blue's Clues was a very popular show in the 1990s. It lasted for six seasons and ended in the early 2000s. However, that was not the end of Blue's adventures. Since then, there have been two other Blue's Clues shows. The focus of this review is the newest Blue's Clues show. Blue's Clues & You is a show that started in 2019.
For those that don't know, the original Blue's Clues was about a dog named Blue that left clues for her owner, Steve, to find. In the show, Steve would talk to the audience and ask for their help with finding clues. Steve eventually left to go to college, so his brother, Joe, became the new host. Steve and Joe were live-action hosts, while Blue and most of the other characters were animated.
The new show, Blue's Clues & You, continues the trend of Blue leaving clues to find. This time around, the host is Steve and Joe's cousin, Josh. The new show uses a more modern style of animation for Blue and the other animated characters. Aside from a new host and a new type of animation, Blue's Clues & You is nearly identical to the old show.
Something that could be considered a big criticism is that a lot of the new show's episodes are remakes of episodes of the original show. What I mean by that is a lot of the new episodes have the same plot, clues and events as the original show. For example, the original show had an episode about Blue's friends getting presents for her birthday. The new show also has an episode about Blue's friends getting presents for her birthday. In fact, a lot of the presents that Blue gets in the new birthday episode are the same presents that she got in the original birthday episode. I do admire how much respect the new show has for the old show, but there are times where it copies too much. At times, it feels like the only differences between the old show and the new show are the host and the animation.
Despite that big criticism, there is a lot to like in the new show. While the new show often copies the old show, it replicates a lot of the heart, enjoyment and good lessons of the original show. It gives a new generation of kids a chance to get the same type of entertainment and meaningful morals that the original show had. It also gives nostalgic fans of the original show a lot more content of their favorite characters.
While the new show does copy a lot of things from the original show, there are some changes that help keep things fresh. The show gives more screentime for Blue's friend, Magenta, which is a very welcome change. There are also some new characters. The most notable of the new characters is the Rainbow Puppy.
An important element to discuss is the new host. Josh Dela Cruz, who plays Josh, is the third host of the Blue's Clues franchise. The first two hosts were Steven Burns, who played Steve, and Donovan Patton, who played Joe. Steve left such a big impact on fans that it's been hard for them to accept anybody else as the host. It is no secret that I absolutely love Steve and have a hard time imagining a better host than him. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't other talented hosts who can do great things with the franchise. Joe was a very good addition to the franchise. Is the same true for Josh? Yes. Josh has the lovable enthusiasm, energy and passion that's needed to be a Blue's Clues host. As much as I miss Steve, I'll happily admit that Josh is a very good host that is a joy to watch. Also, he's an excellent singer, so any song that he sings is a joy to listen to.
For those that love Steve and/or Joe, it should be noted that both of them make guest appearances in the new show. They are always welcome additions that are great treats for the fans.
While Blue's Clues & You might not be as great as the original show, it is a cute, appealing show that has a lot of heart and enjoyment. I recommend the show to fans of the original show.
