I knocked on the door and held my breath. Today could be my last day with Toren. Tomorrow he would be forced into an arena to fight for his life against ridiculous odds. I shook my head. No, I shouldn't think like that. Toren's going to be fine. He's going to come out of this alive and together we're going to find a way to escape. Positive thoughts, Sam. Positive thoughts. The door swung open and there was Toren, his hair ruffled from sleep. I opened my mouth to say something, anything, but suddenly he grabbed me. He pulled me into a bear hug with his face turned into my neck. Shocked, I put my arms around his waist and rubbed his back in slow, deliberate circles. Toren caught me off guard. "Samantha." He whispered, tickling my skin with his pronunciation of my full name . He never called me Samantha. It was always Sam, or Sammy. "Yeah?" I choked out, bewildered. He hesitated. "Nothing." We were still standing in the door frame, locked in an awkward embrace. I tensed, and he felt it and pulled away. "I'm sorry." He said, his tortured eyes burning down into mine. It was almost unbearable. "F-f-for what?" I stuttered, struggling to regain my thoughts. "For leaving you." At this I blinked and looked at him with what must've been utter incomprehension. "You haven't left me.. you're standing right here." I said slowly, enunciating more than necessary. He reached out as if to touch my face, but hesitated and let his arm drop back to his side. "But I will." He said. "Tonight.. I'm not gonna make it, Sam." That was enough to shatter the foggy haze that covered my thoughts. I reached out and gripped his shirt, pulling him down to where we were eye to eye. "Toren, don't you ever say that again. You're going to be fine, do you hear me! You're going to win and then we're gonna get out of here. If you think for second that I'll let you give up-" And then he was kissing me. His lips brushed mine soft at first, but then I was on my toes, my fingers eagerly tangling in his hair. He reacted before I could, pulling me tightly against him, and crushing his mouth to mine. All I could feel was Toren, the boy who knew everything about me. The one I could trust, my ally. I'd never had any romantic thoughts about him before. His hands ran up and down my back, giving me cold chills. In a place so empty of life, I'd never felt more alive. It was almost like adrenaline coursing through my veins. He broke away and stared down at me for a second, questioning. I answered him with a reassuring smile before his lips found mine again. He pulled me up into his arms, my legs winding around him fearlessly. Turning, he kicked the door shut and carried me across the room to his bed. He lie me down gently on my back and pulled his shirt over his head. In less than a minute he was on top of me, kissing me again, hungrily this time. My hands traveled up and down his chest freely, memorizing the scars he'd earned in battle. They found his belt and easily undid it. He pulled away for minute, fumbling to remove his pants. I took to my tattered old shirt, unbuttoning it till I was laying there topless. There were no bras here. I was sure Toren stopped breathing when he saw me. He only hesitated a moment before he was on me again, moving my lips underneath his. Just ten minutes ago, we'd been hugging..and now this? Maybe it was all too fast. Reluctantly, I pulled away. We were both breathing rapidly, I could feel his heartbeat pounding in his chest. "Toren I think maybe-" I trailed off as he reached out and cupped my face in his hand, running his finger delicately across my cheek bone. I closed my eyes as he softly touched his lips to the corner of my mouth. I could feel his smile.
"Sam?" his voice was quiet, and gentle. "Hmm?" He hesitated. "Nothing." I opened my eyes, taking him in. His expression was thoughtful. "What's 'nothing' supposed to mean?" He smiled, and leaned down to where his lips brushed my ear. I shivered against his hot breath. "It means I love you." I stiffened. "What?" When he spoke again his voice was louder and more confident than before. "I love you, Samantha Basilio. I have since I met you, and there's nothing you can do about it." Before I could react, he rolled over, pulling me on top of him. He reached up, one arm around my neck, pulling me closer. The other crushed my bare chest to his. He began kissing me again, sending electric sparks all throughout my body.
I groaned lazily and rolled over, opening my eyes. Toren lay next to me, asleep. He looked so peaceful and innocent. You'd have never thought he was capable of killing someone. Awake, he always looked fierce, with worry lines, and seemed to be constantly frowning. I sighed and sat up, looking around for my clothes. This wasn't the first night she'd stayed in Toren's room. Many a times, when I'd smarted off and taken a beating, I'd sneak from my room and crawl in bed with Toren, allowing him to wipe away my tears. This was, however, very different. Before he was a friend I could rely on to curl up against and feel safe. But last night they'd shared something much more than that. He'd said he loved her, she remembered. Had he said it in the heat of the moment, knowing he could possibly not be coming back tomorrow? No, he'd meant it. I remembered the way he'd looked at me, like he had a thousand times before, but I'd only noticed just then. I blushed and scooped up my clothes off the floor. I slipped my pants back on, and began buttoning my shirt. One of the buttons were missing, but it didn't really matter. She had to hurry back to her room encase Dex had an order for her.
