Chapter 8

(warning: this part contains scenes of violence)

Kay and Sarah sat back intently as the Winchesters pondered a solution to their dilemma. From the distracted looks on their faces they’d been struggling to decide if leaving the girls alone in a hospital unprotected, especially when one of them had uncontrollable supernatural abilities, was a smart move on their part. Dean knew it just like Sam that either way they had to leave, especially when there were only so many hours in to visit in a day. But Adam was out there…and alone. For all they knew he could be hurt or worse…

“I just don’t think the two of us leaving… is a smart idea Sam,” the older Winchester commented vaguely, brushing his fingers against the short crop of his hair. “Especially since Kay could have an attack at any time. I don’t like it…. What if we took them with us?”

“Dean, we can’t just hijack a patient out of this hospital,” Sam imputed brightly, glancing briefly at Sarah. “It wouldn’t look right and besides according to Kay’s medical file she’d been declared dangerously suicidal, doctors will be watching her around the clock.”

“Well we both can’t go, that’s crazy!” As if Dean didn’t have enough to deal with, first an empath and now his younger brother’s second resurrection. The weights were just piling on his shoulders. “What about that thing Cas says is coming? We still don’t know what the hell it is let alone what it’ll do when it finds Kay here.”

“She’ll be safe here, and we won’t be gone long.”

But Dean refused to submit. Ever since the moment he first laid eyes on the pretty little mechanic, his determination to help her was developing more and more into something complicated. He was compelled to keep her safe as long as it took to find whatever could be after her and kill it dead. No matter what she could do, Kay was helpless in a hospital, which wasn’t exactly a decent place to hold a dangerously unstable empath.

“Dude this hospital is death trap for a girl like Kay,” he fierily stated to his much taller but younger brother. “Anything could happen. She could have a target painted on her back for all we know.” He shook his head, gritting his teeth. “Sammy our job is to protect Kay until we find whatever is pushing those poor deluded bastards over the edge.”

Sam sighed, rubbing his forehead. He knew the risk was steep, especially when a young girl’s life depended on them. But standing around wasting time, when their brother was alone on some highway wasn’t an option.

“Adam is out there Dean,” Sam quickly informed his older brother. He was trying to maintain the level of his emotions in case the empath absorbed enough to make her hyperventilate. “We have to get to him before the angels or the demons find because right now…he’s the one that needs our protection. So let’s just quit arguing and leave before something happens to him.”

“Sammy I wanna find Adam as much as you do…. But if we leave-”

“Can I say something here?” Kay unexpected appeared behind Dean, weakened from her last attack, battling through the remaining dark feelings of the hospital, which was absolute torture. The young man instantly caught her before she collapsed, supporting her body against him. Then she swallowed hard, looking back at Dean with uncertainty flushed over her porcelain face. “Okay…you have to go Dean. If this is about finding your brother then I understand.”

Dean could feel her trembling beneath his grip. If anything were to happen to this girl while he was out of dodge, he’d never forgive himself.

“No, it’s not a good idea if my brother and I leave you.” he told her plainly, “It’s too much of a risk with your empath mojo going all over the place… One of us has to stay just in case.”

Kay smiled at him as Dean helped her back into her bed. Something about the way her eyes glimmered into his reminded him of the constellations.

“I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine here,” she snickered innocently, “It’s not like I’m that pathetic and Sarah’s going to be here with me until you get back.”

“Alright,” he started to say eagerly, scrambling in his jacket pockets for a card with his cell number in case of an emergency, “First sign of any trouble you call me, okay?” Dean handed it to her. “I’ll be jetting here faster than Wally West. But if we don’t get back in time-”

-Dean! Don’t worry,” she assured him, taking his hand into hers, “It’s kinda of making my brain buzz.”

Crap! He barely counted on the whole empath thing, “Oh sorry” chuckled Dean bowing his head, “Guess I forgot that you do that.”

“It’s cool.” She smiled again as he disengaged himself from her.

“We’ll be right back…I promise.” He said again glancing at Sarah, who silently informed him she would keep a close eye on her friend. Then looking down at his wrist watch, Dean set a time to return in his mind as he and Sam hurried out the door and through the entrance to where the impala sat.

“Kay’s gonna be okay, Dean.” Sam informed his eagerly anticipated brother, who was placing the keys in the ignition. “We won’t let anything happen to her…trust me. Sarah would call me if Kay couldn’t and let us know if something came up.”

“I know…but I just can’t shake the feeling that we’re putting her life at risk by leaving.” Dean mentioned heavily as he stirred the black car out of the lot.

2 hours before the outbreak.

Night was closing in on Little Falls hospital, creating shadows of discomfort through the blinds into Kay Forster’s suit. Gently she pressed her palms to her ears, pacing her breathing rate in case the infectious clutter of emotional wave overwhelmed her. Sam and Dean were gone for hours without a word. Within that time a mysteriously creepy tall skinny member of the hospital staff, Dr. P as he informed the girl to call him, had taken a blood sample from her forearm claiming it was a standard procedure. But to Kay it felt like she should be wary of this man.

He set off vibes that were incredibly eerie with his thin moist skin, sunken eyes and cheeks, balding head with a thin wreath of white hair. Kay didn’t know what was about this man that made her feel almost on edge, though he seemed like a friendly enough guy. Sarah was even estranged by the doctor’s presence in the room. But when he left, a quiet feeling settled in the pit of Kay’s stomach. It wasn’t a comforting silence for the empath.

“I wonder when they’re gonna get here,” Sarah said pacing the floor, looking for something productive to do. “They should’ve been back by now. I’m getting worried.”

“Well don’t because it’ll only make me nauseous,” Kay informed her friend carefully stretching her bandaged arms. “I’m still trying to get a handle on this thing before my head explodes.”

Sarah appallingly glared at the girl sitting in the bed. “That wouldn’t actually happen…would it?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about that…not since my attack.” She lowered her eyes. “All I know is, I feel like I’m gonna vomit and my head’s just throbbing like a church bell. I guess I should’ve asked for that pain killer after all.”

“Hang in there okay sweetie,” Sarah said, tenderly rubbing her friend’s tense shoulders. “I’m sure it won’t be much longer. In fact… I think I’ll dial them up to see where they are.”

But when she pulled out her cell to punch in the number the signal suddenly went dead, follow by the power flickering like crazy. Kay took deep breaths, concentrating on the soft layer of Dean Winchester’s voice when he first pulled her out of the darkness. Something felt wrong…she couldn’t exact the feeling from every other person in the hospital but something strange was happening.

“That’s weird.” Sarah sighed, “My phone just went dead and… what’s up with the lights?”

“Sarah… I feel something,” Kay gasped, slightly rocking back. “I don’t know what it is but the pain I’m sensing right now…it’s spiraling… I almost feel like my brain is being swallowed up in a blender.”

“What do you think it is?”

“I’m not sure… can you see if there’s anyone else out in the hall?”

Sarah poked her head out the door, the lights continuously blinked in her eyes. “I don’t see anyone, wait here I’ll try and see what the fuss is about.”

Just as her Burnett friend quickly hurried out the room, atmosphere thundered with horrifying screams. Kay could feel every ounce of pain conflicted in each scream as she hugged her arms around her knees. Why wasn’t Dean here yet with her? The emotion shot through her chest like a white hot pain, causing the empath girl to fling off her bed landing smack on the hard floor. It was too much. She had to find Sarah and leave the hospital before she went into a vegetative state.

Exhaling, Kay crawled across the floor, using what little strength in her injured arms trying to lift her body towards the door. But just as she lifted her glazed eyes up at the exit, a dark figure stood before her. Slow at first then it started to shuffle towards her at a quicker pace. As the light cast over one side of the figure, Kay’s desperation shifted into fear over the hideously torn face of a man who looked as though he could barely walk on his broken leg. His stomach cavity had been ripped open, intestines exposed in a pool of blood as he approached Kay.

The empath girl was stunned, paralyzed with fright. This man didn’t even shed a smidge of pain. No heart beat, the only sound he made was an eerie groan though his shredded neck wound. He was a walking tomb which meant… he was no longer alive and yet he was mobile.

Before Kay hesitated any further, the thing lunged at her, mouth dripping with foam and blood, teeth desperate for her flesh. Kay screamed, fused with enough adrenaline to kick her assailant in the shin, before she made a dash for it down the hall.
