Chapter Five

Gracie tightened her grip on the steering wheel of her little truck, squinting into the pouring rain. Her fingers screamed in protest. Gracie swallowed and leaned forward into her seat. She couldn’t hardly see a thing. She groaned and wished for the millionth time she had taken Nate up on his offer to drive her to school. Gracie peered around her wind shield wipers that were flying as fast as they could. She had to be nearing the turn off road to the school.
“ Ok Grace. Just take it easy. You can do it. You’re all most there.” Gracie gave herself a pep talk as her fingers ached from their painful grip on the steering wheel.
Something loomed out of the dreary gray. Gracie frowned and leaned closer over the wheel.
“ What is that?” Gracie murmured to herself. She gasped as her truck hydroplaned. She braked and straightened the wheel. Suddenly, what ever was in front of her came closer, barreling down the middle of the road. Gracie’s heart starting pounding as she made out the form of a black Escalade.
“ Oh no. Please no.” Gracie prayed the car would swerve back to its side of the lane. It continued on its path down the middle of the road. It just had to be Deylin’s car, she thought to herself. Anyone else she could just let hit her, but she didn’t want him to get hit. His football career could be ruined if he got injured. And she didn’t really want to be known as the girl who ruined the captain of the football team’s career.
Gracie tried to confirm that it was actually him. But who was she kidding? There was only one guy at this school who drove a black Escalade.
Gracie groaned, knowing that precious seconds of time were ticking away. She was pretty sure that there was nothing on her side of the road, she would just swerve and end up in the ditch. No harm, no fowl.
Gracie tightened her grip again and gave the Escalade a few more seconds to return to its side of the road. No such luck.
Gracie yanked on the steering wheel, bracing herself as her little truck went careening off into the ditch. But when she tried to brake, nothing happened.
“ Oh come on!” Gracie cried as her truck keep barreling ahead.
A dark silhouette of something loomed in front of her truck. A cry rose up in her throat as she realized it was a tree.
“ No, no, no.” She moaned. She wrenched her steering wheel to the side, trying to avoid the tree looming up in her path. Her truck’s tires slid on the wet ground and turned sideways, but continued toward the tree, causing the driver's side to come closer and closer to slamming against the tree.
“ Help me.” Gracie murmured to no one unparticular. Her side of the truck hit the tree, causing her head to snap forward. Her forehead hit the wheel, making the horn honk. She was very faintly aware as her windshield shattered. The glass made soft tinkling noises as it rained down on her.
Things were starting to become fuzzy. The only thing that was keeping her conscious was the pain buzzing through her arm and leg. She slowly looked down at her leg, which was tapped under something that was twisted looking. Her poor little truck was totaled, that was for sure. Gracie very slowly tried to get herself un tangled from the mass of metal around her, but as she moved, a searing pain shot up her leg, into her hip.
A scream slipped out and everything went black.
