"You're supposed to say Pollo!" the 12-year-old corrected.
"No, I mean Angel! Duck!"
Aryess gave her companion a confused look right before he tackled her to the ground. His body protected her from the blast as a missile sailed over their heads and crashed into the building beside them, throwing brick and shrapnel into the air.
"Nic!" she shouted in alarm. Nic was off her in a second and had his hands lit and burning.
"Move!" she exclaimed. He obeyed in flash and the knife Aryess had thrown empalled in the chest of a hulking thug dressed in all black. His eyes widened before he collapsed to the ground.
"Holy crap!" Nic and Aryess said in unison.
The man groaned but did not open his eyes.
"Get you bag," Nic ordered.
"But, Blaze-"
"Now!"
Aryess grabbed her backpack off the ground and sprinted out the alley after her oath brother. The smoke of the dust was clearing and the ringing in the girl's ears was subsiding. She could now hear the screams of terrified citizens and the wail of sirens.
"What just happened?" she called, gasping as she tried to keep up with the faster, taller 14-year-old.
In response Nic pulled her behind a row of trash cans. He peaked over the tops and watched as police vehicles screeched to a stop in front of the Gotham Bank. A helicopter shone its spotlight on the robbers Blaze and Angel had knocked out. He looked over at the younger girl, who was also watching the scene. The turned in unison and slid to the ground with the scene to their backs, then stared at nothing with wide eyes.
"Think we just unintentionally stopped a bank robbery," Aryess said. She glanced at Nic who had a widening smile on his face.
"You're really starting to freak me out," she admitted.
the fire-caster continued grinning.
"Why are you smiling like that?" the knife-thrower asked uncomfortably.
Nic folded his hands behind his head and said, "Guess I'm a better teacher than you thought."
Aryess slugged him in the shoulder and stood. "I'm going home before Daemian starts looking for me."
"G'night, Angel."
"Later, Professer Blaze," she mocked as she walked away toward home.
