Artemis' POV
I stared at my ceiling angrily. I was still staying in our apartment, but now I was all alone. Damn it dad, I thought sitting up. Why do you want me to be alone? I jumped off my bed and headed towards the window. "I'm blowing this town." I muttered angrily, climbing out the window.
Star City was unusually quiet tonight. There was still some traffic, but nothing too hectic. I slid down the fire escape and headed towards the sidewalk. I jammed my hands in my pockets of my jeans and frowned. A few people looked at me funny, but didn't say anything to me. Good, let me be alone! I yelled at myself in my mind. I felt my phone vibrate, but I didn't feel like answering. I sighed and looked at the screen. It was Wally. If you answer, he'll know something is wrong. So don't answer. But then he won't trust you. Does it matter? Yes. No. Yes. No. Yes! No! I shook my head angrily and cursed silently. I answered the phone.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hey, Artemis. It's Wally." There's that sweet voice I'm always craving to hear.
"Oh hey."
"Are you okay?" he suddenly asked me.
"Yeah, I'm good." I lied.
"Artemis..." he trailed.
"I said I was good." I snapped.
There was silence on the end of the line.
No, I think. Please still be there. I didn't mean it that way.
"Okay, if you say so. But in case you need to talk...just call me back." Wally finally answered.
"Okay, I will. And...sorry if I came off too harsh." I said sadly.
"It's okay, Artie. I know you didn't mean it. You'll talk when you're ready."
I found myself smiling.
"Thanks, Wally. I'll call you later then."
"My phone is always on, beautiful."
Shivers flew up my spine when he said that.
"Bye Wally." I laughed.
"I love you." he said.
I froze, mouth open.
"Artemis...? I said I loved you." Wally said, questioning my hesitation.
"I-I love you too." I answered softly.
There was a click. Our conversation was over.
He loves me..., I thought happily. It had been so long since someone had said those three little words to me. I smiled and for the first time, I really meant it. I turned down an alleyway. "He loves me..." I said outloud, still incredibly happy. "Ohh, isn't that sweet?" a voice hissed from among the shadows. I froze. Crap. And just when I don't have any weapons on me. "Who's there?" I asked angrily. "Who else...sis?" I narrowed my eyes. "Cheshire what do you want?" She jumped out of the shadows and landed in front of me. "Payback." I took a step away. "For what? I haven't done anything!" I exclaimed. "You killed mom!" she screamed, lunging at me. "No! N-no I d-d-didn't!" Her hand was on my throat, making it hard to speak. "Liar!" Cheshire yelled at me. "J-jade! It w-wasn't me! It was d-dad!" I choked. Her grip softened and I coughing, gasping for air. "Dad? He said it was you!" she snapped. "It wasn't! I had...a friend with me!" She glared at me. "I don't believe you!" She kicked me in the stomach, and I slammed into a trashcan. I groaned in pain and tried to sit up. "Jade! Honestly-" I cringed as her sword cut my forehead. I felt it. It was warm and sticky. I stood up. "You don't stand a chance, Artemis." Cheshire smirked. She kicked me again, and I landed at the trashcan again. I coughed and vomitted up some blood. "One last touch." she icily whispered. She sliced my arm and my cheek. I wanted to scream but it didn't happen. I tried to get up again, but this was recieved with another kick to the gut. "Stay down!" she commanded. And with that, she was gone. I winced in pain and fumbled for my phone. I pressed speed dial number 2. "Hey Artemis-
Wally started. "W-wally. I n-need you. Corner alley on Benjamin A-avenue." I stammered out. I could tell he was standing up because I heard a dish crash. "What happened?! I'm on my way now!" he yelled. "I g-got jumped." I whispered. "By who!" I could tell he was really angry. My stomach twisted into a knot. "Cheshire..." I coughed, and more blood came out. "Are you okay?" he asked more urgently. "I'm-no. No I'm not. I have a cut on m-my forehead, cheek, and arm. I've already thrown up some blood." Wally was silent. Then our connection went dead. I heard cars honking their horns and I need he was close. "Artemis!" he yelled in the alley. "I'm here." I called back weakly. He zoomed over to me. "Oh my god..." he trailed. I smiled weakly. "When I see her, I will personaly beat the-" I held up my hand for him to stop. "Can we get me some help before you become too overprotective?" That got a smile from Wally. "Yeah babe," he whispered picking me up. "To the Cave."
(At the Cave in the Med-Bay)
I felt a lot better. Megan had bandaged me up, and Wally had stayed right by my side. "No matter what," he ranted. "I will beat the crap out of Cheshire." I smiled. "Wally, no offense or anything, but if she could beat me, she could probably beat you." He stared at me a moment. "Well, she sure as hell couldn't take down the whole team." I laughed. "It's really not their problem, Baywatch." Wally stared at me. "You're family! It will be their problem! You got hurt! You could have died! What would I have done if-"
I leaned up and kissed Wally's lips. He relaxed instantly, but I could tell he was still fired up. "Look," I said pulling away. "I'm fine okay? If you decide to go after Cheshire, I'll come with you." Wally smiled at me. "Okay Artie. But one more thing." he said. I looked at him. "What?"
Wally kissed me. "I love you." he said. I smiled. "I love you too."
