Avatar: The Last Airbender has captured the imagination of audiences for years and now the next book is coming to Graphic Novels at Dark Horse Comics. We're humbled to share the stories of Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko with the help of award winning writer Gene Luen Yang. The creators took a few moments out of their world-building schedules to share a few thoughts about their experiences with A:TLA.

Dark Horse Comics: Avatar: The Last Airbender is an award winning show with an incredibly avid fandom, Did you foresee any of the love your creation has garnered from the beginning?

MIKE: Bryan and I had hoped that people would connect with the characters and the stories the way we did, but you can never be sure how it will be received. I’m grateful for all the fans who have come along on this journey with us.

BRYAN: We just made sure it was a show we believed in and would want to watch ourselves. We weren’t trying to pander to a specific audience. We’re just always trying to create stories and characters from an honest place. Luckily, that quality seems to strike a chord with people of all ages, from many parts of the world.

DHC: What's been the most surprising part of the whole adventure that A:TLA has been for you both?

MIKE: I’m happy and a little surprised that we’re still working in the Avatar universe after almost 10 years. Creating a new series and seeing the original characters come to life in graphic novel form is really exciting. It’s great that people keep watching and new fans are discovering the original series all the time.

BRYAN: I think the most surprising thing to me is that it doesn’t get any easier to make, even after all this time!

DHC: The coming graphic novels follow the show and attempt to seed the world for the eventual Legend of Korra series, how much of the history and future of the world of A:TLA do you have planned out?

MIKE: We figured out a lot of the big events that needed to occur in order for the events in “Legend of Korra” to make sense. We wanted to have a more urban, technological setting and explore the theme of tradition vs. modernity. And since the story takes place 70 years after the original series, we wanted to show how the world had changed over time. This naturally led us to the setting of Republic City, a melting pot for all the world’s benders and non-benders, sort of what New York City was like in the 1920s and 30s. The graphic novels do a great job of showing where the seeds of Republic City begin and will continue to explore Aang and Zuko’s part in creating it.

DHC: Beyond the next book and Legend of Korra are there any other parts of the story you think need to be told, be it comics or cartoons?

MIKE: We know the fans are dying to know what happened to Zuko’s mom, so hopefully we will have an answer for them in the near future. And yes, we have ideas for the past and future of the Avatar world, but at this point it’s too early to talk about anything concrete. The Avatar universe is vast and full of stories to be told!

DHC: What part of the coming books do you think will surprise fans?

MIKE: It’s not exactly a surprise, but I’m excited about how well the graphic novel has come together. The writer, Gene Yang, was already a fan of the show when we first talked to him about the story, and he’s brought a great sense of drama, humor, and heart to the project. And the artwork by Gurihiru is charming, dynamic, and beautiful. The book really feels like an organic extension of the show in the best way possible.

DHC: If you had a super power what would it be?

MIKE: I’ll take flying. Or that thing Nightcrawler does when he pops from place to place.

BRYAN: The power to speak and understand any language. Even in real life, bilingual

DHC: Thank you both for your time!

No sooner had he thrown the first fire ball was he tossed to the dirt outside. They had him hugely outnumbered, he couldn't have possibly won. At least that's the excuse he made for himself. Truth be told, the days attending political meetings and signing peace treaties had him pretty out of shape where bending was concerned. It didn't help that there was a chi blocker in the equation.

And so he found himself laying there face down on the ground—unable to pick himself up.

His nose crinkled up as a cricketspider tiptoed its way through the grass. If he could flinch he certainly would. Cricketspiders...

Ooh, looks like I'm wrapping up the first season. I might do a full review on the season later, actually. But first, why don't I finish reviewing the episodes? Keep in mind this is just my opinion, and we may disagree, so respect my opinion and I will respect yours. Enjoy the article! :)

The Deserter.
Actually, out of all the Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes, it's been the longest since I have seen this one. Nevertheless, I will still review it, because I still remember it pretty well. I like how they get into a topic they haven't yet.. Actually getting ready to learn elements besides...

A burning sensation danced agonizingly over her body. The day was already humid, suffocating so. But this…
This was something else.
Not only was her head pounding furiously and her lungs straining against the heat, but her skin was smoldering, blistering…but without showing so physically.
The pain wasn’t skin deep it burrowed deeper, to her core. Leaving her bones feeling a mock sensation of melting away.
Her muscles a sense of uselessness.
Her heart aching in such a way that she could swear it was ready to burst…at least that’s what illusion told her.

She buckled to the floor gripping...

Once again, we're very happy for Audrey to have won FOTM- she deserves it by far! I messaged her some questions (most of them I stole from Carolyn o_O), and she answered them (a whole lot quicker than I did last time, too)

Q: What's your favorite song? What's your favorite music genre?
A: Frigga by Corner Stone Cues. Ilike all kinds of music, but I mostly like clasical.

Q: If you woke up one day to find yourself in the Avatar universe, what would be the very first thing you did?
A: Ohhh! Hard one... Ummm... I would find Team Avatar and go around helping them. Either that, or I'd steal Aang...

After hours of copying each other's answers, and hours of playing video games and eating nothing but junk, Rex went home, and I was left watching television in the living room, while my dad fixed dinner and my little brother was upstairs in his room being loud as ever. My grandfather came downstairs, and smiled when he saw me.
"Couldn't take a nap with little Aniuk making a racket." he chuckled.
I chuckled back. "You can watch T.V. with me, Grandpa."
My grandfather smiled warmly at me, and sat next to me on the couch
"By the way, Anyu, who was that young fellow here earlier?" he asked.
"Oh, that...

Yue stared at the note in complete confusion and horror. What kind of sick joke was this? What kind of awful person would pretend to be her brother? Hon was dead, even if she did hate to admit it. The proof was almost as good as seeing it with her own eyes. Though curiousity pricked through her parka. Without hesitiation, she tore open the envelope and held up the letter to the light burning in through the large window. It read:
Dear Yue,
I heard what happened and I am very concerned. More like, more concerned. Please feel better.
Love,
Hon

Yue was even more doubtful when she finished reading...

Sydney:

I woke up on the couch. I was shivering even if I had millions of blankets on top of me. The only people in the room were Aang, Toph and Micheal. Aang sat on the other couch unconscious with a bloody bandage around his head. Toph kept feeding him soup and feeling his forehead.

"Micheal?" I asked confused. He nodded and held my hand.

"I'm here. It's 2 a.m. I wasn't going to leave your sight.

"What?" I asked confused while rubbing my aching head.

"A couple months ago I had a dream from Aang. It was before I met you. I'm your protector Sydney. No more said."

I sighed. "Micheal, we have bad...

Sorry it took me A LONG TIME too write this down.

Butterflies danced in the pit of my stomach as I sat on the brown leather couch in the hospital waiting room. Out of all the people in the room, and I knew this for a fact, I was the most nervous and excited for Katara. Her, Zuko, and my mom were in the labor room down the big doors we couldn't go in until the baby was born. Kayla and Kyra each sat on the other couch across from me. They were silent, not a single word left their lips in the past 2 hours.

Kayla, Kyra, Sam, my dad, my mom and me all came to the hospital. My mom was in the room...
