Instead of making a sequel to follow Seed of Chucky (2004) as originally intended the producers decided it was time to return Chucky to his horror roots instead of the comedic side which took control over 'Seed Of Chucky'. The only way they felt this was possible was to "reboot" the franchise with a remake of the original that was darker and scarier than even the original had been.
Nothing has been confirmed, all thats known is that its being made. However, because Don Mancini, writer of the original movie is attached, we can guess it may stick fairly close to the original.
It has not been confirmed, but there is some speculation among fans that there will be a brief cameo appearance by the character of Tiffany (played by Jennifer Tilly in 1998's "Bride of Chucky" as well as its 2004 sequel, "Seed of Chucky"). In the current "Child's Play" mythology, Tiffany is an important character in the life of Charles Lee Ray, the serial killer who transfers his soul into Chucky the doll. If Tiffany appears at all though, it will be in human form and she will not be a doll like Chucky.
Many fans believe that "Child's Play" will be a partial prequel and partial remake, much like what Rob Zombie did with the 2007 "Halloween" remake, where the origins of Michael Myers are shown in a prequel-type beginning before moving onto the later part of the film that is a remake. Because the entire "Child's Play" franchise is about Chucky the killer doll, and not his human form Charles Lee Ray, the likeliness of a long, expansive prequel story like the one in "Halloween" is not of good odds.
After the huge success of the 2003 match-up "Freddy vs. Jason" which pitted "Friday the 13th" slicer Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger) against "A Nightmare on Elm Street" dicer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), there was a lot of talk that studios would begin pitting its horror icons up against each other. While the 2004 sleeper hit "AVP: Alien vs. Predator" and its 2007 sequel "AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem" pulled off the success of the 'vs' title made popular by "Freddy vs. Jason", no other iconic match-ups were made. Heavily rumored ones included Michael Myers of the "Halloween" series against Pinhead of the "Hellraiser" series, as well as Chucky of the "Child's Play" series fighting it out against Leprechaun of the "Leprechaun" and Leatherface and his family of "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" cutting edges against Pluto and his clan of "The Hills Have Eyes. Despite heavy rumors, the ideas were scrapped when "Halloween" was remade into the 2007 hit remake "Halloween", and both "Child's Play" and Hellraiser are in the process of being remade with the 2010 "Child's Play" and "Hellraiser".
All prior Child's Play movies were rated R. The only reason a company would release an R rated movie edited down to PG-13 is if they believe they can make more money because younger kids can see it. With that said, the odds of parents allowing their kids to see a movie about a killer doll (PG-13 or not) is not good. Therefore, an R rating is the most likely. But nothing has been confirmed yet.
