So far, we have seen Damon and Bonnie on the show grow through many tumultuous moments throughout the course of the series. After the last recent episode "The Last Dance", it's safe to say that Damon deep down inside of himself, definitely has some kind of "feelings" for Bonnie Bennett. What kind of feelings they are, we all don't know and I don't think Damon knows either. There was a part that stuck out for me during that episode, actually two parts that stuck out in the episode. And for me, one moment that stuck out was when Damon was looking at Bonnie's unconscious body laying on the floor, appearing as if she were dead. And then, gently caressing and stroking her cheek in a rather tender and affectionate manner and then shutting her eyes, as a sign of showing respect. For me, throughout that whole entire scene, what i saw and I have mentioned it before, I saw Damon's subconscious. The thing is, I only saw a snippet of it, just a glimpse of it. The whole being of Damon's subconscious didn't appear throughout the whole episode. Another moment that stuck out for me was at the very end of the episode when Damon and Elena were having a conversation about how Bonnie will not die fighting Klaus to save Elena and everyone else and how Elena says that we there has to be another way to fight Klaus and to kill him. Right away, when they started talking, I knew automatically and clearly that Damon and Elena are nothing but opposites and they don't understand each other whatsoever. Two people can have opposite personalities but they still "get" each other, because they understand each other at a significantly deeper level then just the surface. Elena does not and will never understand Damon as an individual both on the outside and on the inside.
When Damon and Bonnie interacted throughout the episode, it was clear to see that Damon and Bonnie were highly in sync and in tune with each other. Both of them naturally get each other without any effort and both of them have similar outlooks on things. For example, both Damon and Bonnie want to save and protect Elena. And even though Bonnie's reasons are more selfless and Damon's reasons are more selfish, they still are on the same page, they think alike. It was this episode that made me realize that Damon and Bonnie are so similar to one another and they don't even know it or realize it whatsoever. This core similarity that was shown in this episode between Damon and Bonnie is that they are both willing to GO ALL THE WAY TO SAVE SOMEONE OR PROTECT SOMEONE. Damon and Bonnie as individuals are not "middle of the road" types of people. As opposed to Stefan and Elena, who are more conflicted and middle of the road in their approaches, Damon and Bonnie both are the types of the individuals who put it all out on the table; with them, it's all or nothing. And this is only part of the reason why Damon and Bonnie are so highly compatible. If you look at the way Damon interacts with Bonnie and the way that Damon interacts with Elena, you can clearly see a HUGE difference. DAMON TREATS BONNIE AS AN EQUAL. He doesn't treat her and look down upon her as if she is some incapable 12 year old child who can't do shit. Damon may have tried to undermine Bonnie and her witch powers in the past but he was really just saying that to cover up what he really feels and thinks about her as an individual (which is really that he respects her deep down within himself although he can't admit it) using sarcasm and his classic snarky wit. If anything, the last episode only proved to me that Damon respects Bonnie very much. Another reason why I say that is because if you compare the way Damon was treating Bonnie in the episode and the way that he was treating Elena, then you have night and day, literally. Damon gave Bonnie choices, and he let her have a say in the whole situation. Damon lets Bonnie think for herself as a separate individual. They talk and discuss things through together and they assess the situation together as equals. On the contrary, Damon never gives Elena a say or any choices when it comes to what she feels or thinks. Damon treats Elena like she is some incapable person who can't think for herself and have an opinion whatsoever. Damon treats Elena like an object and Elena is not an object to be controlled. The difference is that while Bonnie would never let Damon treat her like an object (and he naturally doesn't because she challenges him without even realizing it effortlessly and vice versa), Elena actually let's Damon treat her like an object. This happens because Elena is not strong enough to handle a guy like Damon. ELENA SIMPLY DOESN'T UNDERSTAND DAMON WHATSOEVER. They have contrasting and also, incredibly incompatible ways of doing and approaching things/situations and this is why Damon and Elena will never, ever work in the long run and why they will never have a compatible and healthy relationship.
In order for a relationship to be successful, the two individuals within the dynamic must treat each other as equals. What is the point in being with someone whom you don't feel like you're an equal to or on an equal level to? Damon tries to dominate and control Elena and to be quite honest, it is borderline sexist in my opinion. Damon treats Elena like she is so incapable of actually standing up for herself, her loved ones and thinking for herself and making actual decisions for herself. Like I have repeatedly stated in other previous articles of mine, STEFAN IS THE OPPOSITE OF DAMON WHEN IT COMES TO ELENA. Stefan let's her CHOOSE. Stefan lets her think for herself. Stefan let's her be her own individual person. Stefan is not trying to change her or make her constantly see things his way or make it seem as though it is his way or the highway. Stefan does have an opinion and he expresses it openly with Elena and they either argue it, debate it, assess it or discuss it even if it leads to disagreements. Because that is what you do in a healthy relationship. You treat each other as equals. Stefan and Elena are equals. Stefan treats her as an equal and Elena treats Stefan as an equal. Neither one are competing with each other or trying to dominate each other. THEY SUPPORT AND HELP EACH OTHER. And that is what defines a healthy romantic and long term stable relationship. But the problem is, I wouldn't expect Damon to understand any of this, because Damon doesn't know any better. He doesn't know a thing about what equates to a healthy love relationship. Because he only knows obsession. Damon doesn't know how to get control of his dominating and overpowering side especially when it comes to the opposite sex and the sad thing is, for all of this time, Damon has gotten away with it! This is because so far, Damon hasn't directly been in love with or involved with the one girl/woman who is his equal on absolutely all levels imaginable. This is why Damon Salvatore still has that "invisible wall" up and sturdier then ever.
You really think that Elena has actually managed to tear down Damon's invisible wall? If anyone answers yes, then they are delusional. Elena hasn't torn down shit when it comes to Damon. As far as I'm concerned, Elena hasn't done anything for Damon as a person in terms of his personal journey and spiritual evolvement. All Elena has been doing to Damon is spiritually, emotionally and mentally stifling him. And then because of Elena stifling him the way that she does, Damon ends up acting out on impulse, including killing innocent people (2.12 The Descent, for example and 2.13 Daddy Issues, with Damon chewing on Andie like a chew toy) or saying unnecessary shit that he doesn't really mean. For example, In 2.18 The Last Dance, Damon telling off Stefan in such a self-righteous manner that he will be "The One" to ultimately keep Elena alive, as if Damon is trying to rub it in Stefan's face that he loves Elena much more then Stefan does acting like a cocky and arrogant asshole. Or how about the ending conversation with Damon and Elena, when he said straight to Elena's face that he would gladly let her BFF in the world die over Elena herself, when that is the complete opposite of what Elena wants at all. You see the problem and the issue here when it comes to Damon and Elena? Damon and Elena resort to manipulating and using each other constantly because neither of them understand each other as individuals. This is why Damon treats Elena like she is so incredibly incompetent and incapable, because Damon simply doesn't understand her. Damon is not trying to save Elena or even protect her, he's trying control her and dominate her. He's trying to make all of the situations for Elena, instead of giving Elena a chance to have a say in the whole situation. So, Damon doing all of this stuff for Elena and trying to make himself look like MR. HERO in terms of Elena is all one big FRONT and one big lie. This whole hero "I'm gonna be the one to protect Elena and keep her alive" act is not about Elena, IT'S ABOUT DAMON AND DAMON ONLY. Damon is trying to turn this whole situation with Stefan and Elena and himself into one huge competition, because that is the way Damon operates. And he especially operates this when he is obsessing over an individual who just simply doesn't understand him inside and out whatsoever, like Katherine, and now Elena. Damon keeps saying 'I'll even be the bad guy in Elena's eyes and have her hate me for the things I do', but he doesn't seem to understand is that Elena is making him the bad guy, ELENA. Not Damon, Elena. Elena is the only one making Damon the 'bad guy' as he calls himself, because of the kind of impact and effect that Elena has on Damon. Elena has such a bad and unhealthy influence on Damon, that she has managed to bring out the absolute worst side of him imaginable. He may not be constantly killing people and acting like the vicious murderer that he was back in season 1, but he is still acting like the over arrogant, cocky, over-dominating, controlling, obsessive freak, which is not really the true Damon on the inside but rather, the Damon that only Elena and yes, Katherine brings out. The reason why Damon acts like this with not just Elena but with everyone that he interacts with, even people who care about him, such as Alaric for example, is because even though people like Alaric are generally a 'support system' for Damon and his spiritual evolvement, nobody has managed to tear down that "invisible wall". And in my opinion, that "invisible wall" is just as sturdy as it was over 145 years ago. This is where Bonnie Bennett comes in.
At the end of it all, Bonnie Bennett will be the one to save Damon Salvatore. Not because she is trying to save him directly and not because she is going to manipulate him into trying to be "the better man", as Elena constantly puts it. Bonnie Bennett is going to save Damon Salvatore by indirectly (and unknowingly) tearing down Damon's "invisible wall", an invisible wall which has been sturdily staying strong within Damon for basically his entire existence both as a mortal and as an immortal. An invisible wall in which Damon keeps all of his deeply buried inner pain, secrets, hurt, abandonment, self-issues etc, hidden from both the outside world and even himself. Bonnie Bennett will be the only person who is going to indirectly save Damon Salvatore from himself. And this process of tearing down the invisible wall, is going to happen to Damon gradually and it's going to be one hectic roller coaster of a ride. Because the tearing down of Damon's invisible wall is going to include or is all about Damon's future growing and deep feelings for Bonnie. Damon's feelings for Bonnie will be what ultimately tears down Damon's invisible wall. Because for the first time ever in his life, Damon will have found someone who understands him from the deepest corners of his inner essence/self, his whole being, every part of him including the good and the bad and the in between. Damon in the future will have found in Bonnie, an equal and an opposite, the one person who will challenge him in an indirect manner to be the true person that he is without resorting to manipulation and mistrust. Damon will have found in Bonnie, a person who is his equal on all levels imaginable, a person who he can relate to and communicate with in a healthy, honest, open and straightforward manner. Damon will have found in Bonnie, an individual whom can give him the unconventionality (but at the same time, stability that he is secretly yearning for so passionately deep down), recognition and adventure that he so desperately desires in the deeper corners of his inner essence/self. Damon will have found in Bonnie, a person who understands him completely and whom he can feel "human" around without trying to be someone or something he is not. Damon will have found in Bonnie, ultimately, AN INDIVIDUAL WHOM HE CAN EXPOSE HIS SOUL TO COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY AND LET BONNIE IN TO BE "THE ONE" TO ULTIMATELY HEAL HIS SOUL COMPLETELY WITHOUT SHAME AND CLEAN IT OF PAST HURTS, PAINS, AND WOUNDS OF ABANDONMENT, REJECTION, EMPTINESS AND LONELINESS. Bonnie will be the one to save Damon Salvatore from himself and she will be the only one to do this without any effort involved. Why? Because like I have said numerous times before, underneath it all, Damon and Bonnie are equals, they are the same. And also because Bonnie feels the same hurts and pains as Damon does. Both have faced the same kind of issues in terms of abandonment, emptiness, loss, grief, heartbreak and loneliness. They have so much in common even if they appear to be so opposite. They match each other perfectly on all levels imaginable. And once Damon Salvatore recognizes what has been right in front of him this whole time and realizes that he has been overlooking what is right for him, he will ultimately never be able to let Bonnie Bennett out of his sight ever again. Because the feelings that he will develop and have for Bonnie will be so incredibly overwhelming and intense and felt at such a deep, deep level that it will only prove to Damon that he has been looking for love in all the wrong places for his entire existence. Now, the truth is, when these feelings start unfolding inside of Damon for Bonnie, he is going to be a little overwhelmed (just like the novels) and because of this, Damon might actually get fearful/scared and run the other direction. But Bonnie has to be there and be the one to ultimately support him and believe in him (as I'm sure that they will have built a strong and solid friendship) and tell him that it's going to be okay and that there is no reason to fear what is real and what one feels deep down within themselves. Bonnie will be the one to indirectly help Damon into openly expressing emotions and feelings without him feeling ashamed to do so or feeling or appearing weak/vulnerable because of it. Bonnie will be the prime and core reason for Damon feeling again and becoming "alive" again from deep down within his inner soul. There are people who would try to debate this and say, "Oh but Elena has already awakened him and has already made him feel." Well, no. That is not true and that is not the case. Elena may have awakened his mind (which is the cause of Damon's obsession with Elena in the first place and even with Katherine in the past), but Elena has not and never will manage to awaken Damon's inner spirit/essence/soul. It's one thing to awaken someone's mind, it's another thing to awaken someone's heart and soul. And Elena has NOT done that for Damon nor will she ever do that for Damon. Elena most definitely did not do that for Damon in the books series at all. All Elena managed to do for Damon in the novels is turn him into a jealous, possessive, obsessive and vengeful freak and that because of her, it has managed to stifle Damon's spiritual evolvement and redemption journey in the books. And now, the same thing is happening for Damon and Elena on the show.
My question is, if Elena knows and understands Damon so well, then why does she constantly feel the need to manipulate Damon the way that she does throughout both the book series and the TV series? Because when I see Damon/Elena together, all I see is one HUGE GIANT MANIPULATION ON BOTH SIDES; MUTUAL MANIPULATION. I see Damon treating Elena like she's incompetent/incapable and acting like a boastful, arrogant, overly-competitive, obsessive, controlling, and overly-dominating bastard in regards to all things Elena. And I see Elena treating Damon is if he is some little immature child who has no idea about life and treating him like he completely incapable of doing anything right, making him constantly feel like he is unworthy. And on top of that, I see Elena acting like a spoiled rotten brat, who acts bitchy, irritable, snappy, moody and manipulative in regards to all things Damon. So tell me, how can any Delena supporter out there support such a relationship/dynamic like this? How can they openly and proudly support a dynamic like this, a dynamic which is so incredibly unhealthy for Elena and spiritually stifling for Damon? I don't know how many times it needs to be said but DAMON/ELENA IS AN ILL-FATED/TOXIC/DOOMED FROM THE START RELATIONSHIP WHICH WILL NEVER, EVER WORK. What part of that don't people understand? Damon will never be happy with Elena at the end of all because they are too contrasting in so many ways, they have absolutely NOTHING in common that would make them in any way, a compatible and complementary couple/pairing. The bottom line is Damon/Elena treat each other as unequals, while Damon/Bonnie treat each other as ultimate EQUALS. And that is what equates to a healthy, long-term and successful love relationship. But unfortunately, Damon doesn't know any better right now, because he's so obsessed with Elena and thinks that he is so much in love with her, when in reality, he is not; it is purely an OTT obsession. In my opinion, you can't really, truly and genuinely love someone and not treat them as your equal and treat them as if they are not their own separate individual being who has the capability of thinking and doing things for themselves.
So, at the end of it all, I believe in Bamon. I believe in them because when the time is right for them to grow together and realize that they are totally right for each other and compliment each other on all levels imaginable, it will be beyond amazing and epic. This is just the beginning for Bamon on the show and even in the books. The actual journey is just beginning and I'm highly optimistic. In the last episode, the Bamon seed was already planted and now we, as the viewers are all going to sit back and we are going to watch that seed grow into a beautiful thing, which is healthy, vibrant and irreplaceable. We all just have to be optimistic and patient. Because at the end of it all, Bonnie will be "The One" to save Damon Salvatore and vice versa.
