I wanted to share with you my thoughts on what’s going on with Bonnie and what Damon’s behavior towards her really means since the beginning of season 4.
There are two things that I’ve noticed:
1) Bonnie is currently in the dark side
2) Damon is Bonnie’s key to awaken her magic
First, let me explain what is a character’s dark side, notion most people usually misunderstand. A character falling into the dark side doesn’t mean necessarily that the character is going evil and that they’re gonna hurt and kill everyone around them. A character’s dark side is the extreme opposite of their true self. It is when a character succumbs to their worst fears. In Bonnie’s case, she has buried her powers out of guilt and fears, preventing her from being what she is meant to be: a powerful and confident witch to protect her town.
Now, Let’s go over what happened to Bonnie since the beginning of this season.
In 4x01, After Bonnie uses dark magic to save Elena, the spirits punish her by hurting her Grams.
In 4x02, Bonnie mourns her Grams and the loss of her identity as a witch. She can no longer do magic.
In 4x04, Shane tells Bonnie that she can get her magic back without using dark magic.
In 4x05, with Shane’s help, Bonnie lightens candles using her magic.
In 4x6, Bonnie still hasn’t awaken her powers.
Bonnie is so scared to hurt someone she cares about (like what happened to her Grams) that she is afraid to use her magic again. Bonnie’s destiny and true self is to be a powerful witch and be a heroine. Without her magic, she can’t be the one she is meant to be. She needs someone who will bring her back into her true self, her destiny. She needs someone to guide her towards the light. The only person who can do it is Damon and he already started to. Shane doesn’t really count because he just manipulates her. Let’s see how Damon is helping Bonnie finding her way back to her true self. In episode 4, Damon is the one who drives Bonnie to see Shane. In episode 5, he tells the gang that they’re gonna need Bonnie to do her magic. He knows her so well that he knows Bonnie would awaken her powers if someone she cares about was in danger. When Damon says “Maybe that will bring her out of retirement” and “Maybe she decided to make herself useful again”, what he actually means is that maybe Bonnie will be able to face her fears and awaken her powers to be again the badass witch she is supposed to be. In episode 6, the only reason he interrupts Bonnie is because he doesn’t want her to find excuses for not using her magic. Later, when Damon says “A witch who loses her powers gets let out of important conversations”, he actually means that “If you really want us to be the badass team that we are, it's time you face your fears.” Notice also that in that same scene, Bonnie blames Damon for not telling her about Jeremy’s new role as a vampire hunter. She doesn’t blame Jeremy or anybody else. She blames Damon because she considers Damon as her partner. This is why I believe that Damon's purpose is not to be disrespectful towards Bonnie. All he wants is helping Bonnie use her magic again (because this Bonnie's purpose in life) to fulfill her destiny. I've always been one of those who never believed that Damon is using Bonnie for her magic. He just respects who she is and knows exactly what she has to do as a witch and will always make sure that nothing will prevent her from it.
As the season goes, I believe that Damon will, in his own tough ways, keep on helping Bonnie getting her magic back, which means bringing her back to her true self. While in the meantime, Damon will pull Elena deeper into her dark side.
This is exactly what I believe the writers are doing: Damon bringing out Bonnie's true self while he brings out Elena's dark side. If it actually happens that way, it only confirms what we all know: Damon is Bonnie's destiny not Elena.
