Hearing Damage
CHAPTER 2– The Orphanage.
This is the day two men in black suits knocked on the front door.
“Hello,” one of them nodded at me. He slipped off his black lenses. “Are you the daughter of Lisa Moore?”
I nodded. “Y-yes…”
“We’re from FBI and we’re here to take you somewhere.”
“What?” I was confused.
“You will understand when we take you there. Grab the things you need from this house and we’ll be off to go.” The other man told me, almost too hastily.
I was about to turn and go inside when one more thing popped in my mind and I turned my head to the men in black, “I have a sister…” I trailed off.
“Bring her too,” said the man who spoke to me first. “Pack her the things she might need.”
I nodded and went inside the house just as Rue stepped into the living room. She looked at me as I went into her room, jerk her drawers and throw her clothes onto her bed.
I was just reaching for Rue’s little pink suite case and stuffing the clothes inside when I heard Rue’s voice at the door. “Damee, what are you doing?”
I turned my head to her and smiled. “I’ll explain everything when we get into the car, okay?” Rue nodded and I continued to toss Rue’s clothes into her suite case. When I was done, I zipped it shut and placed it on its wheels before reeling it to Rue who backed away from the doorway. “Here,” I gave the handle to her. “Hold onto this while I take some of my clothes into my suite case. Okay Rue?”
Rue nodded, despite being confused about all this packing and leaving.
I quickly hurried to my room and brought out my schoolbag from under my dark covered bed. I grabbed whatever I got from my closet – everything off the hangers and put them in my suite case – before I heard one of the men outside calling.
“Hey, you girls ready?”
“Just a sec!” I slammed the door as I hobbled my way – my bag was really heavy with clothes – out the door with Rue coming into step with me.
Once we were outside, Rue and I saw a long black limousine that went as low to the black road as possible, its windows were tinted pitch black. Just as I neared the back door of the car, I heard the front door click shut and a sound of the key turning in the doorknob with my hearing aids.
I looked slightly behind me, just seeing the second man in black put a silver key in his pocket.
My eyebrows crumpled as I turned back to the car. The first man had already opened the back passenger door and Rue had slid in on what looked like black velvety seats.
I went inside with my schoolbag strapped on my back while the men took our suite cases to the car’s back behind the passenger seats.
“Um,” I began as the men strapped themselves with seatbelts. “Can you tell us where exactly are we going?”
I stared at the men, waiting for an answer, but even after the limousine was pulled out of the driveway, they both didn’t give it to me.
They just sat there in silence as we steered down the road.
“Damee…” I turned to Rue who was clinging onto my arm with wide dark brown eyes that were full of fear. They reminded me of mom’s eyes.
“It’ll be okay Rue,” I hugged her tightly beside me. “I promise.”
It seemed like hours that the car hadn’t stopped at the place we were going and I got uneasy when the last of the forest trees disappeared behind us in a blur – my only place of peace. I couldn’t believe it – we were driving out of town!
“Where the hell are you taking us?!” I cried, glaring at the two men. I wasn’t the type to swear but with situations like this, I lose my temper.
The man in the passenger seat exchanged glances with the one who was driving and he nodded, tilting his head to me as if to say, “Tell her.”
He turned to me, taking off his glasses and stared at me through light blue orbs. “We’re taking you to an orphanage Miss. You’re not old enough to take of yourself and your sister as well as the house so we were told to take you to a nearby orphanage just out of town by the authority.”
“What?!” I screamed, my hands released Rue immediately. “You’re taking us to an orphanage?” Furious tears stung my eyes but I tried to hold them back as I didn’t want the man who turned to me see them.
“We’re here,” said the man who turned into a driveway.
I looked out one of the tinted windows, seeing a tall dreary building that had various mounds of morsels and rubbish at every corner of the building, maybe in the back as well.
The orphanage looked like a dump and seemed deserted but as I stepped outside in the cool air with Rue, I thought as I saw something white move in the cracked windows.
“This is the place?” I gaped, traumatized. Rue tightened her grip around my fingers.
“Follow us,” the two of them walked heavily and, after a moment’s hesitation, Rue and I pursued after them.
The men opened a door, stepped inside and closed the door after us.
To my surprise, the inside was spotlessly clean and looked like a guest house rather than an orphanage. The walls, to my disappointment, were white with nothing on them – no paintings, no pictures hung on the walls… nothing.
Nobody was inside, despite the cleanliness. The whole place was completely vacant.
“Where is everybody?” Rue asked, breaking my attention on the walls.
“They’re either upstairs in their rooms or went out.” One of them replied, making his way up the stairs while he talked. “They do t quite often – the going out – while we’re gone to pick up homeless children from–”
“We are not homeless,” I interrupted huskily.
One turned to me and nodded. “True, you’re not homeless like some others who roam around here, but you’re orphans and that means your parents are either dead or abandoned you.”
We made it upstairs in the long hallway.
I was about to snap at that man when the second one opened a door and walked inside to draw the curtains apart to let some sunshine in. There was a bit of light in the room but it was pitch black in the room.
There were two beds on either side of the room and the walls here weren’t blank like the others. There were swirls on them with different ocean waves facing south or east but most of the walls were covered with swirls and some flowers.
I saw a sudden movement in the bed on my right and Rue almost screamed, hiding behind my leg as a person sat upright in the bed.
It was a boy who had dark tousled hair and dark blue eyes… his eyes looked vaguely familiar somehow.
“Argh! Didn’t I tell you last time not to draw them stupid curtains David?!” The boy growled between his teeth as he stood up with his hands curled at his sides.
“Keep it down Jacob or we’ll have to send you off to a school for troubled teens.” The man at the door told the boy.
Jacob turned to glare at him when he blinked at the sight of me and my sister. “Who’s this?” his voice came out surprised. Of course.
“This girl,” I felt a hand on my shoulder from the man at the door. “Mr. Lightwood, will be your roommate.”
“What?!” Jacob and I shouted and I turned to face the man behind me.
“Excuse me but I don’t want to start rooming with a boy.” I told him. “Isn’t there another girl in this shitty building?!”
The man behind me shook his head. “All of them have roommates Miss …?”
“Love,” I finished for him. “I’m Miss Love – Damee Love.” I informed.
“Love,” the man said reluctantly. “Unfortunately, you’re going to have to stay with this boy, Jacob Lightwood. Your sister will have to come with us down to the Children’s’ Dormitory.” The man in the room, David, explained. “Only children ten years or over can stay up here.”
“No! No! Damee!” Rue screamed and I went down on my knees. She was crying, tears streaming and sobs built up in her throat. “I don’t want to go!”
“Rue,” I said firmly. “You’ll be okay. I’m just going to be upstairs.” I told her.
“But I wanna be with you!” Rue sobbed.
I nodded. “I want that too, Rue. But these men will take care of you and I’ll come downstairs to say goodnight to you before going to bed every night.” I touched Rue by the chin before wiping away her tears gently. “Will you stay strong Rue? For me?” I said softly.
Rue pursed her lips and nodded slowly. She clung to my hands and smiled a small smile before looking up and Jacob. She walked over to him and glared.
“If you hurt my sister in any way, I will kill you.” She said with her eyes narrowed. Jacob widened and I I smiled as Rue skipped over to me. She kissed me on my forehead and hugged me tight. “I’ll see you soon,” she whispered.
I pulled away, standing up and looking at David who was next to the man in the doorway. “Take care of my sister or I will be the death of you.” I threatened with as much revulsion as I could. They nodded and left with Rue walking in between them but not holding hands.
I exhaled a sigh, turning around to meet Jacob who stood in the room next to his bed, his face still in shock from what Rue just said.
I ignored him and threw my bag on the empty bed, sitting down on the bed with my legs crossed.
Even though I was rooming with a boy I knew it wasn’t half as bad.
But I just knew that there was going to be trouble in this building and that I was going to be the target…

I smile, after being beaten senslessly by people I once loved.
I smile, when I'm locked outside in the rain for hours
I smile, when my boyfriend lies to me
I smile, as people laugh at me for being different
I smile, when my parents fight
I smile, when I'm called broken
I smile, when I cry
I smile, as people call me names even satan wouldn't dare to say
I smile, as my world crashes down on me
I smile, to hide the sharp pain biting my soul
I smile, for YOU.
Do you know what this means?
Do you know how it fells?
Who are you to to say these things?
For you don't know there story or life,
You know nothing.
You know no pain,
For you are pain.
You know no hurt.
For you are hurt.
And who are you to say I am no one?
Because I am.
I am me
And nothing can change that...
